22. Annenberg Media Exhibits -- Volcanoes - Introduction
Today, there are many active volcanoes worldwide. Is there anything we can do to predict how volcanoes is inspired by programs from Earth Revealed.

Teachers' Lab
The goal of the Teachers' Lab is to provide teachers and educators with a deeper understanding of commonly taught math and science concepts. Many of the Labs are based upon professional development workshops broadcast on the Annenberg/CPB Channel Today, there are many active volcanoes worldwide. Is there anything we can do to predict how and when they will erupt? As the world's population grows, more and more people are living in potentially dangerous volcanic areas. Volcanic eruptions continueas they have throughout historyposing ever-greater threats to life and property. Mt. Rainier looms over the Seattle/Tacoma area, endangering a population of more than three million people. South of Mexico City, Popocatépetl has begun to come to life again, putting a million nearby residents at risk. Another million people living in the Naples area are threatened by Mt. Vesuvius's continued unrest. The need for planning is urgent. Continue >> "Volcanoes" is inspired by programs from

23. Plate Tectonics - Earth Like A Puzzle - Children Learn About Plate Tectonics, Ea
Explores plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, and the way they shape the earth.

by Nan Criqui
M ost people know that Earth is moving around the Sun and that it is constantly spinning. But did you know that the continents and oceans are moving across the surface of the planet? Volcanoes and earthquakes as well as mountain ranges and islands all are results of this movement.
Less than 100 years ago, many scientists thought the continents always had been the same shape and in the same place. A few scientists noted that the eastern coastline of South America and the western coastline of Africa looked as if they could fit together. Some also noted that, with a little imagination, all the continents could be joined together like giant puzzle pieces to create one large continent surrounded by one huge ocean.
Imagine the continents as giant puzzle pieces. When the pieces are placed in this arrangement you can see how well their coastlines fit together.

Seminar series in Menlo Park Worldwide and U.S. Volcano Updates Feature Stories An Assessment of Volcanic Threat and Monitoring Capabilities in the United States: Framework for a National Volcano Early Warning System According to a new USGS report on NVEWS , since 1980, 45 eruptions and 15 cases of notable volcanic unrest have occurred at 33 U.S. volcanoes. About half of the most threatening U.S. volcanoes are monitored at a basic level and a few are well monitored with a suite of modern instruments. However, the report cautions, monitoring capabilities at many hazardous volcanoes are sparse or antiquated, and some hazardous volcanoes have no ground-based monitoring whatsoever. Recognizing that there are potentially dangerous volcanoes within the United States and its Territories that have inadequate or no ground-based monitoring, the USGS Volcano Hazards Program, with CUSVO, is preparing a plan for a National Volcano Early Warning System (NVEWS).

    Yellowstone Monthly Activity Update
AUGUST 2005 Yellowstone Seismicity Summary During the month of August 2005, 140 earthquakes were located in the Yellowstone region. The largest of these shocks was a magnitude 2.1 on August 24, 2005 at 3:27 PM MDT, located about 26.4 miles east northeast of Tower Junction, Wyoming. No earthquakes in this period were reportedly felt. Earthquake activity in the Yellowstone region is at relatively low background levels The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) was created as a partnership among the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Yellowstone National Park, and University of Utah to strengthen the long-term monitoring of volcanic and earthquake unrest in the Yellowstone National Park region. Yellowstone is the site of the largest and most diverse collection of natural thermal features in the world and the first National Park. YVO is one of the five USGS Volcano Observatories that monitor volcanoes within the United States for science and public safety.

    Vanuatu
Vanuatu (formerly called the New Hebrides Islands) is a line of volcanic islands and submarine volcanoes 1,400 miles (2,300 km) east of northeast Australia. There are 13 main islands, nine of which are home to active volcanoes. Espiritu Santo and Malekula are older islands made of Miocene (5-24 million years old) andesitic volcanic rocks. Volcanic rocks on Maewo and Pentecost islands are also Miocene in age. Map with islands (names on left) and volcanoes (names to right of islands) from Fisher (1957).
The geologically recent tectonic history of this region is complex. Colley and Warden suggested that the Miocene volcanic rocks were related to south-westward directed subduction. Present-day volcanism is related to the north-eastward directed subduction of the Australian Plate beneath the edge of the Pacific Plate. The two plates converge at a rate of about 9 cm/year. A divergent plate boundary (called a spreading center or spreading axis) is east of Vanuatu. Modified from Monzier and others (1997). Sources of information on the volcanoes of Vanuatu (New Hebrides Islands).
