Words that are repeated throughout the World Press Review Iraq Anthology 1981-2003
All definitions are from Webster’s New World College Dictionary , Fourth Edition, except where noted.
arms:
any instruments used in fighting; weapons
“The Soviet Union sold about $10 billion worth of arms to Iraq.”
biological weapons: any infectious agent such as a bacteria or virus when used intentionally to inflict harm upon others. This definition is often expanded to include biologically-derived toxins and poisons. Biological warfare agents include both living microorganisms (bacteria, protozoa, rickettsia, viruses, and fungi), and toxins (chemicals) produced by microorganisms, plants, or animals. (Some authors classify toxins as chemical rather than biological agents, but most do not, and they were included within the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention-as reflected in its formal title, the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on Their Destruction).

Over the past few decades, cognitive psychologists have considered how different word characteristics affect the recognition of words and pseudowords in lexical-decision tasks (LDTs). In such a task, a participant determines if a string of letters is or is not a real word (e.g., "dimp"). Two characteristics believed to affect word recognition are frequency of occurrence and number of word meanings. It has been theorized that the lexical entries of words in the mental lexicon are organized according to their frequency of occurrence, with high frequency entries examined prior to low frequency entries (Becker, 1979). Therefore, high frequency words should be recognized faster (and with fewer errors) than low frequency words.

Introduction
These notes are a miscellany of grammatical rules and explanations, comments on style , and suggestions on usage I put together for my classes. Nothing here is carved in stone, and many comments are matters of personal preference . Anyone who can resist turning my own preferences into dogma is welcome to use this HTML edition. Feedback is always welcome. I should be clear up front: I'm not a linguist, nor a scholar of the history of the language. (If you're curious about who I am, you can look at my CV and decide whether I'm worth listening to.) Linguists are wary of " prescriptive
Why, then, have I spent so much time on a prescriptive and fairly traditional usage guide? Because these notes may be useful in making your writing clearer and more effective . I'm not out to make definitive statements about what's right and what's wrong , and Lord knows I wouldn't be qualified even if I tried. I can, however, make suggestions on things that are likely to

ONTARIO ASSOCIATION FOR FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WITH COMMUNICATION DISORDERS http://www.oafccd.com General Suggestions for Vocabulary Development and Development
of Meaning Associations at School
1. Use basal readers or listings of the most frequent words to choose words at the student's grade or linguistic level. Teach the vocabulary within a story or unit approach rather than out of context in listings. Retention is low when the words are taught in random groupings. If the words are taught within stories the student may be asked to "make-up" a definition for the words and to use them in more than one context or sense. Example: Suppose the word is "shimmering" and the sentence in the story is "The moonlight was shimmering on the lake". The teacher may discuss other uses of the word, such as "The lady's earring was shimmering in the sunlight." Multiple meanings should be discussed and words used in their many senses. Example: Suppose the word is "ease". Multiple meanings: "I did it with ease." "I eased into the water."
