Does Michael Jackson really have vitiligo?
What is vitiligo? Vitiligo is a fairly common non-contagious skin condition for which the cause is unknown. It can occur at any age, but usually starts in young adults. For most people, it starts with a loss of pigment in patches that are usually symmetric (meaning in the same areas on the two halves of the body). Areas that are often affected are the corners of the mouth and eyes, hands, elbows, knees and genitals. Patches can come and go, but in some people the patches can spread, involving almost the entire body. This is known as vitiligo universalis. Hair follicles can also be affected, resulting in patches of white hair. Though the cause is unknown, it is clear that the body's immune cells attack the pigment producing cells of the skin (called melanocytes). Since the patches without pigment no longer have melanocytes, they are very susceptible to sunburns and skin cancer. Sunscreens are very important. Treatment for vitiligo varies. Some people's patches respond to cortisone creams. A variety of light treatments (such as something called PUVA) can help. There is ongoing research to find faster and more effective ways to treat this frustrating condition.

Support A Handbook for Patients with Vitiligo You have been told by your physician that you have Vitiligo. Like most patients, you have questions and concerns about the disease. Some of the most common questions are addressed below. What is Vitiligo? Will it Spread? Vitiligo may spread to other areas, but there is no way of predicting whether or where it will spread. In many cases, initial pigment loss will occur; then after several months, the number and size of the light areas become stable and may remain so for a long time. Episodes of pigment loss may appear again later on. Many vitiligo patients report that initial or later episodes of pigment loss followed by periods of physical or emotional stress, which seem to trigger depigmentation in those who are predisposed. Sometimes, depigmented areas may spontaneously repigment. Can Vitiligo be Treated?

Support Vitligo Basics Aaron Lerner, M.D. and Gisela Moellmann, Ph.D. - Department of Dermatology, Yale University WHAT IS VITILIGO? Patients with Vitiligo develop white spots in the skin that vary in size and location. The spots occur when pigment cells, or melanocytes, are destroyed and the pigment melanin can no longer be produced. Melanocytes normally occur throughout the skin, and in the hair follicles, mouth, eyes, and some parts of the central nervous system. In Vitiligo, pigment cells can be lost in any of these areas. Common sites of pigment loss are: Exposed areas: hands, face, upper part of the chest Around body openings: eyes, nostrils, mouth, nipples, umbilicus, genitalia Body folds: arm pits, groin

Vitiligo Information.
Vitiligo is a chronic (long term) skin disorder that affects about 1 percent of the world population and is characterised by the loss of skin colour, or pigment, from the skin causing the affected skin to become lighter than the skin surrounding it. Vitiligo affects people from all races and colours of skin, male and female, all age groups society groups and currently cannot be cured.
The condition is not infectious and cannot be spread or caught by coming into contact with sufferers. The condition causes the body's melanocytes to stop producing melanin (the body's natural pigment), which in turn causes the skin to lose its natural colour. It is believed that the condition is a result of our individual genetic make up. This does not mean, however, that a person will contract Vitiligo just because a parent has the condition. The circumstances for why a child may contract Vitiligo whilst both parents show no signs of the disorder are still unknown. This issue of triggering factors is still under investigation to see if there are a series of genetic triggers required to cause the skin condition to take hold of the sufferer.
Occasionally Vitiligo may appear in sufferers who also suffer from other disorders such as alopecia areata thyroid imbalance or diabetes , or where there is a family history of these conditions. Whilst this is not always the case, a predisposition to one or more of these conditions may help a medical professional or dermatologist to diagnose Vitiligo.

Originally Published: June 27, 2003 Hello Alice, I have Vitiligo on my penis and on other parts of my body, but it's really starting to mess with my head with girls when they first see my penis. I mean, there's nothing wrong with it, it just has loss of pigmentation. What should I do? Dear Reader, For those readers who don't know, vitiligo is a rather common skin condition affecting about 1 percent of the world's population. Vitiligo is marked by the loss of skin pigment, leaving patches or whole areas of the body completely white. It affects both sexes and people of all races and all ages. The white patches of skin are caused by the loss of cells that produce melanin (melanocytes), which is responsible for providing skin pigment. Why those melanocytes disappear, though, has not yet been determined. It isn't clear from your question if the women you are with say something about your penis, or if you, yourself, are worried about what they may be thinking. If you find yourself in an intimate situation with someone and notice that she's looking quizzically down below, you might want to take a second to explain what vitiligo is. As common as it may be, most people don't know much about it or even what it's called. A brief explanation suffices, especially if you have other patches of white skin elsewhere on your body. This will probably help dissipate any anxiety that your vitiligo is some condition affecting only your penis.

Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a common condition where white patches develop on the skin. It is due to loss of pigment from affected areas of the skin. There are usually no other symptoms but the appearance of the skin can cause distress. The affected areas of skin can be covered by skin camouflage creams. Also, treatment has improved in recent years and in some cases the pigment can be restored.
Understanding the skin To understand the cause of vitiligo, it is useful to have a basic understanding of the skin. The skin has two layers - the epidermis and the dermis. Beneath the dermis is a layer of fat, and then the deeper structures such as muscles, tendons, etc. The epidermis has three main types of cell.
  • Basal cells. These are the bottom layer of cells in the epidermis.
  • Keratinocytes. These cells are in layers above the basal layer. They make a substance called keratin which is a hard 'waxy' material. Keratinocytes are constantly dividing and a certain number are dying at any given time. The top 'horny' layer of the epidermis is made of dead keratinocytes which contain keratin. The top of the skin is constantly being shed and replaced by new dead cells which contain keratin.
  • Melanocytes. These cells are dotted about at the bottom of the epidermis. They make a pigment called melanin. The melanin is passed to the nearby skin cells which colours the skin and protects them from the sun's rays. Melanin causes the skin to tan in fair skinned people. Dark skinned people have more active melanocytes. The melanocytes are stimulated when exposed to sunlight to make more melanin.

Vitiligo
What are the aims of this leaflet?
This leaflet has been written to help you understand more about vitiligo. It tells you what it is, what causes it, what can be done about it, and where you can find out more about it. What is vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a condition in which areas of skin lose their normal pigment and so become white. It is common, and affects about 1% of the world’s population. What causes vitiligo?
The pigment that gives your skin its normal colour is melanin: cells known as melanocytes make it. The cause of vitiligo is not yet fully known but many think that it is a disease in which the body makes antibodies to its own melanocytes, and in doing so destroys them. After that, the skin cannot make melanin properly, and vitiligo is the result. In support of this idea is the way that people with vitiligo are more likely than others to have diseases, caused in much the same way, of other organs such as the thyroid. Sometimes vitiligo seems to be triggered by an episode of sunburn. It affects men and women of all races equally, but is most easy to see in people with dark skins. It is not catching. Is vitiligo hereditary?

Consensus Definition and Description of Vitiligo vulgaris
Vitiligo is a specific type of leukoderma.
  • It is best defined as an acquired (post partum) disorder that selectively destroys (or that results in the selective disappearance) of some or all melanocytes residing in the interfollicular epidermis and occasionally in the follicle as well.
  • The mechanism(s) by which the melanocytes are lost (or by which melanocytes are made to disappear) may be multiple but are not yet identified unequivocally.
  • Vitiligo is characterized by white macules on the skin that can be few or many in number. The depigmentation can be wide spread, even a complete loss of all interfollicular melanocytes.
  • The cause(s) of vitiligo are unknown but it is considered likely that the melanocytes of the affected individual genetically are more susceptible to one or several environmental factors that initiate the processes resulting in the loss of melanocytes and appearance of white spots on the integument.

Thanks. Re: Vitiligo From wafaa haddad [Log on to view profile] on 2004-04-02 homeopathy Offers a comprehensive treatment as it goes to the root of the problem by helping rebalance the energy and eventually restoring the pigmentation. As a rule, homoeopathy never looks at Vitiligo as a local disease. Vitiligo is considered as a local expression of a systemic disturbance. This calls for an individual case study in every case. As such, there is no single specific remedy for all cases. The exact treatment is determined only upon in-depth evaluation of the individual case, usually with a miasmatic or constitutional prescription.
