Therefore, individual creative research and art production is developed in conjunction with an evolving understanding of theoretical discourses and debates surrounding contemporary art and culture. Central to the programme is independent studio research. No emphasis is placed on any one medium. Drawing, digital, painting, performance, photography, printmedia, sculpture and video are represented and much of the student research crosses these disciplines.

S UMMARY This exhibit tells the story of the African-American artists' quest for creative recognition in their chosen art forms. The story follows these artists via their early exposure to European art and genre paintings and respectfully following these rules in their learned crafts. Later, there is a fusion shown, using the European, African, and American cultural context in these artists' works. The exhibit is a visual presentation, along with historical text covering the early and recent achievements of these artists involved in the Visual Arts. Over 60 personalities are on display with biographical facts and information. Many examples of their creations are also represented. Included are: painters, sculptors, muralists, engravers, portraitists, print makers, illustrators, photographers, woodcut printers, lithographers, folk artists, and cartoonists. Books, pictures, photos, magazines, museum catalogs, visual crafts, [etc.] are on display. Library resources and established museums as focal reference art centers are included to enhance the viewers scope in seeking additional information on this subject. A bibliography is available upon request.

Brackenridge Elementary, Tafolla Middle School, and Lanier High School. This education facility will serve to attract youth to a public visual arts space, enabling them to access visual and media arts instruction and exhibitions. The facility will also act as a much needed venue for the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, the City of San Antonio, and community-based non-profit organizations and/or groups. The Guadalupe truly believes that art can be a catalyst for change in a community. The At the forefront of such an exciting project has been Executive Director Maria Elena Torralva-Alonso. At a press conference held on Wednesday, February 4, Torralva-Alonso announced that effective February 27, 2004 she will step down from the position of Executive Director. VISUAL ARTS STANDARDS OF LEARNING The Virginia Visual Arts Standards of Learning are content standards that are incorporated in the Standards of Quality—the Virginia Board of Education’s policy document for public education. The Virginia Board of Education is charged with establishing and revising these content standards to maintain academic rigor and provide challenging visual arts educational programs in Virginia’s public schools. The Visual Arts Standards of Learning consist of a set of benchmark standards that students are expected to achieve at each grade level or core high school course. The program is designed to reflect the knowledge, processes, and skills essential to guide teaching and learning and to enable teachers to place emphasis on critical areas of the visual arts curriculum. These rigorous, measurable, and jargon-free standards establish a framework for developing local curricula that best meet the educational needs of Virginia’s students. Background The initial Art Standards of Learning were developed and adopted by the Virginia Board of Education in 1983. Assessment resource materials for classroom use were developed in 1987 and reflected the 1983
