The Boston University School of Visual Arts prepares painters, graphic designers, and art educators for professional careers in the art world. Each discipline offers its students an intimate learning environment within the College's larger community of artists. Graduate admission is highly selective, and limited class size ensures students individual attention from faculty mentors. Visits from distinguished artists and lecturers as well as a widely varied program of exhibitions broaden and enhance each student's educational experience. The four on-campus galleriesthe BU Art Gallery, the Commonwealth Gallery, the 808 Gallery, and the Sherman Galleryprovide exhibition opportunities for graduate students and alumni. Facilities available to graduate students include a computer lab, welding shop, wood shop, and painting, drawing, printmaking, and photography studios. Graduate painters and sculptors receive individual studios.

calendar of events contact Dance Instrumental Music ... Arts Programs Visual Arts students develop confidence in the areas of technical and foundational skills, and express themselves visually and creatively through the creation of their own work. They become active participants in their own progress through a critique process involving teachers and students, structured dialogue in the classrooms/studios, and with portfolio reviews. Students take a series of courses in drawing, design, sculpture, art history, computer graphics, painting, and photography. They learn to work in a variety of media, including acrylic, watercolor, oil, pencil, pen, and charcoal. As they progress, students may choose elective courses in two and three-dimensional media. By the third year, students enroll in a portfolio class where they assemble their best works as both a record of performance and to use in applications to art schools or universities. Seminars with artists, as well as independent study programs in museums, galleries and arts centers enhance the quality of the visual arts program. Since production is such an important of the arts program, students in all disciplines perform or exhibit several times each year.

    Dean: Jerry L. Draper
The School of Visual Arts and Dance is relatively young within the history of the University. Founded in 1973, the school has existed largely as presently constituted since 1978 when the Department of Dance faculty joined the other components of the school: the Department of Art, the Department of Art History, the Department of Art Education, the Department of Interior Design, the Institute for Contemporary Art, and The Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts. In 1990 the school assumed administration of the Appleton Museum of Art. These academic units offer an extensive program of instruction in all areas of the visual arts and dance. In fact, every level of undergraduate and graduate degree that a university can offer in these areas is represented within the school, including the established terminal degree in each discipline. Accordingly, the school is unique in the state of Florida. The school promotes the visual arts and dance within this community. Its goal is to provide a broad-based liberal arts education for students, while at the same time training them to be dancers, artists, scholars, teachers, or other professionals in the field. It functions to enrich their lives and to provide them with the means of self-expression in an increasingly complex and impersonal technological society. The study and practice of art are viewed as a necessary link in the educational system, both as a learning process and as a means of personal fulfillment. Measures are applied within the school-and indeed throughout The Florida State University campus-to keep the spirit of open inquiry vital and productive.
