NEWS Bluecoat Development: work starts on flagship cultural project that will put art at the heart of Liverpool
Building work has started on Liverpool's historic Bluecoat Arts Centre in a scheme to develop this popular cultural facility in time for the city's year as European Capital of Culture in 2008.
Hoardings are now up at the front of the building, visible from busy Church Street. Enabling works, carried out by Chester Masonry, who have a strong background in conservation work, are well under way, in preparation for the main contract, which will be let this winter. Already the rear South East wing (which was patched up after this part of the building was badly damaged during the May Blitz in the Second World War) has been demolished to make way for the new arts wing. Ceiling beams and other parts of building's original structure, hidden for many years, are being revealed.
Commenting on the award, HLF's regional manager Tony Jones said, 'This project will totally rejuvenate Bluecoat as a community facility, as well as conserving an important historic building. HLF is dedicated to opening up and maximising the use of heritage gems like this and I have no doubt that the new facilities will be a valuable asset for local people and visitors alike'.
Bluecoat Director Bryan Biggs said, 'For almost 300 years, the building's development has been intertwined with that of Liverpool itself, an integral part of the city's culture. I am delighted that work has now started on arguably the most exciting phase in Bluecoat's rich history. It is a major step towards realising our ambitions for a truly innovative centre for creativity at the heart of Liverpool's cultural renaissance. It will enable us to extend our support to artists and creative businesses in the city as well as working with artists from around the world. When we reopen in the year the city marks its own 800th anniversary, we also look forward to celebrating the building's heritage significance'.

    34. Visual Arts Program Description
Princeton visual arts Princeton or Art School? Many of the program s faculty have taught in art schools and have been lured to Princeton as a result
    http://www.princeton.edu/~visarts/info.html
The Program in Visual Arts GENERAL INFORMATION Princeton Visual Arts Princeton or Art School? Getting In Majors and Certificates ... The Creative Environment at Princeton PRINCETON VISUAL ARTS Princeton University's Program in Visual Arts has a faculty of working artists of established reputation and outstanding teaching ability who offer studio courses in ceramics, digital photography, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. They give seminars and lectures in contemporary artistic practice and the history and theory of film as well. Whether students are interested in a program of study leading to a special major in studio arts or a certificate program, or desire to take just one or two courses, the visual arts program provides them with excellent physical facilities and an atmosphere of serious intellectual inquiry. Princeton believes that a strong liberal arts education provides an essential foundation for the aspiring artist and is the best platform for understanding the place of the arts in modern society. Even a cursory glace at the dominant journals devoted to art, photography, and cinema indicates that the visual artists of today are engaged in a dialogue with art history, information theory and literary criticism, and in debates about group identity and politics. As a result, the artist needs to be broadly familiar with the cultural history of the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries and be aware of the multiplicity of issues that have excited artists of these periods; all of these things come together to form the ongoing traditions leading up to the present.
