Dollars and cents kill yet another Singapore arts publication
SINGAPORE : The Esplanade - Theatres by the Bay is up and running, the Singapore Arts Festival is doing well. While by no means perfect, the Singapore Season earlier this year was orchestrated admirably and was a good first step. Artists such as Michael Nyman have premiered works commissioned by the National Arts Council (NAC). The T'ang Quartet is going from strength to strength. All is well with Singapore's arts scene, or so it would seem. We're on track in efforts to raise the profile and standards of the arts here and to become an "arts hub".

More Than a New Discovery
by Charlie Finch
Alix Smith, "See What I Mean?" July 15-30, 2005, at Visual Arts Gallery, 601 West 26th Street, New York, N.Y. 10001 Like so many newly minted graduates, Alix actually had her first show a while back, at the Caelum Gallery on West 26th Street. The noted photography collector, Jean Pigozzi, whose collection of Seydou Keita’s work was featured in an Art + Auction cover story last spring, bought out Alix’s entire show, possibly because her images of stiff Upper East Siders appealed to Pigozzi’s international playboy persona. In the SVA show, Smith’s work owes a heavy debt to Tina Barney. Alix invited a diverse group of acquaintances to assemble their favorite possessions and sink into them, as it were. Artist Melissa Dadourian flashes her pert butt nude, astride her collection of classic Playboy magazines, for example.

Mission:
To connect artists with income and exhibition opportunities.
Motto:
"Yes, you can!"
The magazine is in its 20th year, and we're looking forward to another 20- plus.
Selling art isn't necessarily easy, but it CAN be done. Our mission is to provide the most comprehensive source of listings of professional opportunities for visual artists available anywhere. (And we were using this slogan 20 years ago, before that competitor "borrowed" it.) E ach issue features 20-30 pages of hundreds of listings of juried shows, residencies, grants, galleries reviewing portfolios, publishing opportunities, positions open, and much more. Click here for more info on the listings. Along with the listings, we provide a variety of readable ("No CriticSpeak!") articles for working artists. Every month we cover topics such as self promotion, art marketing, selling on the Internet, effective display techniques, licensing and reproductions, public art and commissions, artists making a difference, art law, federal and hazards updates, "soul food," the psychology of creativity, and artists creating community/working together. Click here for more info on the articles.

Pixiport Photographers In The News
Jeff Alu I'm a 3D Artist/Animator who has begun taking black and white photography in an attempt to get back to the basics of light and shadow. Many of my clients demand high-impact, colorful graphics, which have their place to be sure. But it can often become overwhelming, and the act of doing black and white photography clears my mind a little. My photos tend to be graphic in nature, and I try to look for strong leading lines. Some have described by photos as "3D", which I suppose comes from doing so much 3D work. I do allow myself to alter the images in Photoshop, using dodging and burning. I've found this to be such a great technique for isolating subjects or bringing out emotions. I didn't dodge and burn at first, but now I do it on every image. I had my fill of dark room work when I was working at JPL/Palomar Observatory. We would venture up to Palomar each month for six nights and take pictures of the sky using the 18" Schmidt camera. We used hypered 4415 film, usually processed about 100 films a night. We took pairs of films of different areas of the sky with a 40 minute separation. We would then take a pair of films and look at them under a stereo microscope, trying to detect near-earth asteroids and comets. It was fun work, but also hard work, and I learned to really hate dark rooms in the process.
