In computer security technology, a virus is a self-replicating program that spreads by inserting copies of itself into other executable code or documents made by crackers (for a complete definition: see below). A computer virus behaves in a way similar to a biological virus , which spreads by inserting itself into living cells. Extending the analogy, the insertion of the virus into a program is termed infection , and the infected file (or executable code that is not part of a file) is called a host . Viruses are one of the several types of malware or malicious software. In common parlance, the term virus is often extended to refer to computer worms and other sorts of malware. This can confuse computer users, since viruses in the narrow sense of the word are less common than they used to be, compared to other forms of malware such as worms. This confusion can have serious consequences, because it may lead to a focus on preventing one genre of malware over another, potentially leaving computers vulnerable to future damage. However, a basic rule is that computer viruses cannot directly damage hardware, only software is damaged directly. The software in the hardware however may be damaged. While viruses can be intentionally destructive (for example, by destroying data), many other viruses are fairly benign or merely annoying. Some viruses have a delayed payload, which is sometimes called a

A virus is a small particle that infects cells in biological organisms. Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites ; they can reproduce only by invading and controlling other cells as they lack the cellular machinery for self reproduction. The term virus usually refers to those particles which infect eukaryotes (multi-celled organisms and many single-celled organisms), whilst the term bacteriophage or phage is used to describe those infecting prokaryotes bacteria and bacteria-like organisms). Typically these particles carry a small amount of nucleic acid (either DNA or RNA , but not both) surrounded by some form of protective coat consisting of proteins lipids glycoproteins or a combination. Usenet may be a virus minefield
From... By Sam Costello (IDG) A part of the Internet that predates the Web, and once was one of the busiest places online, is becoming a breeding ground for some of the Net's most vicious viruses, says one security firm. That corner of the Internet is Usenet, a series of newsgroups dedicated to topics as diverse as the Los Angeles Lakers, Unix system administration, or any imaginable permutation of sex. On Usenet, people interested in those topics can meet, discuss, and post files. But along with debates and downloads, viruses are spread and archived there, says Dmitry Gryaznov, the manager of advanced virus research at McAfee, a division of Network Associates. Gryaznov, a member of the VirusPatrol project at McAfee's Avert Labs, has been studying viruses on Usenet for more than five years. Despite the perception that Usenet is increasingly irrelevant in the face of the Web, its population is actually growing, he says. The volume of Usenet posts grew 20 percent from January 2001 to April 2001, he says. And those new visitors are likely to encounter a flood of viruses, including Trojan horses, backdoors, and tools used to take over PCs for use in denial of service attacks, he says. West Nile virus found for first time in Florida
Spread of the West Nile virus has been rapid along the Eastern Seaboard. TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) State health officials announced Friday a dead crow tested positive for the sometimes-fatal West Nile virus, the first time the virus has ever been detected in the state. Florida Department of Health spokesman Frank Penela told CNN that sentinel chickens were placed throughout the state since a case of the virus was reported recently in North Carolina. A sentinel chicken is one that is placed in a cage in areas known to have heavy mosquito populations. The chicken is tested periodically for mosquito-borne diseases. MORE Get more information about West Nile from the CDC "We were always concerned that the pattern was moving this way, and we've been working to try to prevent anything from happening here," Penela said. No human cases have been reported in the state, but Florida Department of Health Secretary Robert Brooks warned residents to take precautions.

In addition, WNV activity has been detected in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Guadeloupe and El Salvador. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 15,000 people in the U.S. have tested positive for WNV infection since 1999, including over 500 deaths. Many more people have likely been infected with WNV, but have experienced mild or no symptoms. Statistically, a person's risk of contracting West Nile is low, and less than 1% of those infected develop serious illness from the virus. Those at highest risk for serious illness are the elderly and those with lowered immune systems. However, people of all ages can develop serious illness, so it is important for everyone to protect themselves from mosquito bites to minimize the risk of infection. ( Brought To you by AOL click HERE At least, according to one pundit. In late May / early June 2001, there was a hoax concerning the "sulfnbk.exe" "virus". Email went around the world telling people that on May 25 (or June 1), 2001 the "virus" would "activate". People were told how to delete the file from their system. The email was in the form of a chain letter and told people to forward the letter to everyone they'd sent email to in the past few months and warn them about this file. The sulfnbk.exe file actually does nothing more than allow for long file names within Windows. It's benign and quite harmless. But thousands (millions perhaps?) of people deleted the file anyway based on the "say-so" of a chain letter. My "love" of AOL is legend. I believe the
