  • Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine // 1997: a new biological principle of infection // how are virus-infected cells recognized Virus assembly: Alphavirus represents one of the best known model systems among enveloped viruses. The RNA genome (red) is packaged into a nucleocapsid (orange for the capsid proteins), which is surrounded by a lipid bilayer (green) with transmembrane spike proteins (blue). One of the questions for this group to investigate is how the viral proteins drive the assembly reactions through the cytoplasm (left), and how the nucleocapsids bud out of the host cell to become a mature virion capable of further infections. Viral infections require the virus to enter a new cell, multiply, and then to be released to infect further cells. These processes often involve changes in the structures of the viral proteins, and our goal is to determine their conformations at the various stages of an infection. Our research helps not only to explain how the virus functions, but also to design anti-viral drugs more effectively.

    Division of Virology
    The Division of Virology, which includes the Medical Research Council Virology Unit, is the largest grouping of researchers in the UK focused on the molecular biology of human viruses. Glasgow has a long tradition in virological research, since the establishment some forty years ago of the direct forerunners of the present Division of Virology, namely the University's Department of Virology (the first UK department dedicated to this discipline) and the MRC Experimental Virus Research Unit (later named the Virology Unit). The Division's research programmes encompass virus genomics, fundamental studies of virus replication, gene expression and virus assembly, and the interaction of viruses with the host cell.

    Scanned images are of West Nile virus isolated from brain tissue from a crow found in New York. The tissue was cultured in a Vero cell for a 3-day incubation period. The Vero cells were fixed in glutaraldehyde, dehyrated, placed in an Epon resin, thin sectioned, placed on a copper grid, and stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate. The grids were then placed in the electron microscope and viewed. Total magnifications, image A: 65,625x;
