(cidofovir injection) for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in AIDS patients is Gilead's first commercially available nucleotide analogue. Both Viread (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) for the treatment of HIV infection in adults and Hepsera (adefovir dipivoxil) for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B, utilize the unique nucleotide analogue structure. In addition to these products and clinical candidates, Gilead is evaluating an extensive library of proprietary nucleotide compounds. Among the primary targets of this screening activity are HIV, herpes viruses, hepatitis B and pox viruses.
Throughout the process of designing novel antiviral therapeutics, Gilead biologists and chemists work together to examine key viral enzymes that are required for the replication of pathogenic viruses in host cells. With their detailed understanding of the structure and function of these viral enzymes or targets, the goal of Gilead researchers is to design and synthesize new antiviral inhibitors with more favorable characteristics, such as enhanced potency, improved resistance profile, prolonged duration of activity and better selectivity. Nucleotide Analogues Nucleoside Analogues Protease Inhibitors Neuraminidase Nucleotide analogues are a new class of antiviral therapeutics designed to have high specificity and potency, long duration of action and more convenient dosing schedules than the current treatments for viral diseases. Their chemical and metabolic properties may contribute to an increased durability of action, a decreased propensity to select resistant viral strains, a more convenient dosing schedule and favorable pharmacological profile.

A hypothesis: the conjunction of soldiers, gas, pigs, ducks, geese and horses in Northern France during the Great War provided the conditions for the emergence of the “Spanish” influenza pandemic of 1918–1919
The Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918–1919 was a cataclysmic outbreak of infection wherein over 50 million people died worldwide within 18 months. The question of the origin is important because most influenza surveillance at present is focussed on S.E. Asia. Two later pandemic viruses in 1957 and 1968 arose in this region. However we present evidence that early outbreaks of a new disease with rapid onset and spreadability, high mortality in young soldiers in the British base camp at Etaples in Northern France in the winter of 1917 is, at least to date, the most likely focus of origin of the pandemic. Pathologists working at Etaples and Aldershot barracks later...

    J. Marie Hardwick, PhD, the David Bodian professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, was recently named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). more
Molecular Microbiology and Immunology integrates many disciplines (biochemistry, infectious diseases, virology, parasitology, molecular biology, immunology, ecology structural biology) concerned with the study of the transmission, immunobiology, and pathogenesis of bacterial, parasitic, viral, and immunological diseases of public health importance. Research is at the population, organismal, cellular, and molecular levels. The central premise of this broad approach to the study of disease is that public health problems can best be addressed by understanding basic biological mechanisms. Our research aims to advance the understanding of the biology of disease and to use this knowledge to solve public health problems. Research takes place in the laboratory, in the clinic, and in the field, as the faculty works to combat such enormous public health problems as malaria, sexually transmitted diseases, mosquito-borne encephalitis, tuberculosis, diarrhea, measles, AIDS, and autoimmune diseases. We offer master of health science ( MHS ), master of science (
