Technical Assistance Visits
High Schools That Work technical assistance visits for 1997-98 are being implemented based on the new publication Framework for Virginia High Schools That Work/Tech Prep Technical Assistance Visits. The guide has been developed to assist school divisions in implementing Virginia's approach to public education as delineated in the Virginia Standards of Accreditation, Standards of Learning, and State Assessment Program. Modeled on a similar guide from the Southern Regional Education Board, the document was developed by Lolita B. Hall, State HSTW Coordinator, Virginia Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education Services, and edited by Mary Grattan, librarian/editor, VVCRC. Within a 1 1/2-day period, the visiting technical assistance team reviews performance-based data provided by the site; interviews students, staff, faculty, and others; and observes classrooms and related activities. In the context of HSTW key practices, the team highlights one or two promising practices and makes recommendations of ways the site can further improve teaching and learning. The practices and recommendations feature prominently in the team's written report. The practices described below are a sampling of those observed by teams during the fall of 1997. A list of promising practices identified during the 1997-98 visits will be published in a Virginia HSTW Site Development Guide in spring of 1998.

(Wednesday 19th March 2003) ST CIARAN'S WIN THRILLER TO RETAIN ARTHURS CUP St Ciaran's Ballygawley emerged from one of the best Ulster Schools Finals ever contested at any level with a sensational 4-10 to 3-12 triumph over St Paul's Bessbrook at Clones on Wednesday.
St Ciaran's were staring defeat in the face when they fell seven points in arrears midway through extra-time but the Ballygawley side staged a miraculous comeback to retain their title. In an incredible encounter, the teams were inseparable after 60 minutes, St Ciaran's having chalked up 2-8 and St Paul's replying with 1-11. It had been 1-7 to 1-6 in favour of St Paul's at the halfway mark in normal time and the Armagh champions looked as if they were on the verge of a famous result when they went on to produce a storming display in the first period of extra time to lead by 3-12 to 2-8.

Falcarragh Community College 1-8
(Wednesday 19th March) ST CIARAN'S CLINCH MCDEVITT CUP WIN Inspired by the remarkable heroics of the St Ciaran's Under-16 team, the School's Under-14 side completed the second leg of a famous double with a 3-12 to 2-9 victory over Falcarragh Communty College in the 2003 McDevitt Cup Final at Clones on Wednesday.
The Donegal representatives showed a lot of spirit in the first half and were still very much in contention at the break when they trailed by a single point (1-6 to 1-5).
However, St Ciaran's stepped up a gear in the second half and the Tyrone champions ran out impressive winners, adding a further 2-6 to their tally before the end, their defence conceding just four more points.
Defensively, the winners were excellent, right through from keeper Pearse Molloy to Francis McElroy, Peter Hughes, Christopher McKenna and others, with Justin McKenna and Martin Rodgers proving a very effective partnership at midfield.
Up front, the chances were created and finished off to good effect, with Darren Carson, Justin Halligan and Darren Canavan all registering goals.

Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is.
Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.

Jim Crow laws
According to C. Vann Woodard, the origin of the term “Jim Crow” as applied to segregationist measures against African Americans is “lost in obscurity.” He notes, “Thomas D. Rice wrote a song and dance called ‘Jim Crow’ in 1832, and the term had become an adjective by 1838. The first example of ‘Jim Crow law’ listed by the Dictionary of American English is dated 1904. But the expression was used by writers in the 1890s…” Jim Crow laws were initiated by white politicians in the South to circumscribe black voting rights and to exclude them from participation in various social arenas which would have to be shared with white people; the net result was a social system of separation of the white and non-white “races” in the South. Historians continue to debate the timing and extent of de jure segregation (separation by law), and the impetus behind this phenomenon. But generally speaking, separation of the races by custom or law was becoming increasingly apparent in the 1880s.
