(this list will be updated frequently - last updated on Monday, January 17 th Sports Network International would like to congratulate the following schools for their acceptance into the 2005 U.S. ARMY CADET COMMAND JROTC CHAMPIONSHIPS in Landover, Maryland. The demand to enter the event from schools throughout the Region has been exceptional and the upcoming event should be spectacularly competitive! Looking at the list of schools below, the Eastern Region Drill Championship should be the deepest and most exceptionally talented competition field in the history of Army JROTC Eastern Region drill. The programs listed below deserve our praise and admiration as they will compete with honor at the upcoming Region Championship event. IMPORTANT NOTE! Currently, a few competition spaces remain in both the Armed and the Unarmed Division of the Eastern Division "Army Nationals" competition. As the early entry qualification deadline has now passed, these few additional available entry spaces will be filled strictly on an earliest-received basis. Schools still looking to enter this fantastic event should move quickly to submit their registration form along with the modest $100 event registration fee.

Therefore, instruction carries over into evening lesson preparation. Program Offerings All summer students receive instruction in fundamental study techniques at the beginning of the session. Instruction covers test taking, note taking, writing, critical thinking, and time management. To assist in time management and general organizational skills, each student is required to keep an assignment notebook, which is subject to random checks by the classroom teacher or by the study hall monitor. The Citadel votes to admit women
June 28, 1996
Web posted at: 10:15 p.m. EDT (0215 GMT) From CNN affiliate WCIV CHARLESTON, South Carolina (CNN) The Citadel fought tooth and nail to keep one woman from enrolling as a cadet in its all-male military academy in 1993. Friday, however, it abruptly ended its opposition to enrolling qualified female cadets. The school's governing board voted unanimously to drop the 153- year-old school's requirement that all cadets be men. The move puts the academy in line with the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled Thursday that the all-male enrollment policy at the Virginia Military Institute, another state-supported school, was unconstitutional. "Effective immediately, The Citadel will enthusiastically accept qualified female applicants into the corps of cadets," said Jimmy Jones, board president, during a news conference. Senior Chance Wilson was the only cadet to hear the school's announcement in person he just happened to walk by during the press conference. He is crushed by the news. "I'm hurt. I mean, this is a school that I love, and to see it changed so drastically, it hurts," he said.
Search for identity
Wilson said young men come to The Citadel to find out who they really are. "You can't do that anymore, there's no place left to go for that," he said. "VMI and The Citadel were the only places left."

"War sometimes separates those who were once friends
Civil War always does..."
From the original documents in the VMI Archives A few months after the end of the Civil War, two old friends and West Point classmatesone a southerner and the other from the northexchanged letters. The correspondents were General Francis H. Smith, Superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute, and General George W. Cullum, Superintendent of the United States Military Academy. Both were members of the USMA Class of 1833. Once close friends, the war had made them enemies. In November 1865, Smith contacted Cullum, hoping to visit West Point and renew the ties that had been broken by war.

Looking up the Hudson, West Point
Taking the Long View, 1851-1991
On March 16 , 1802, Congress approved legislation establishing the United States Military Academy at West Point , one of the oldest military service academies in the world. Strategically located on the west bank of the Hudson River 50 miles north of New York City, West Point has been continuously occupied by U.S. troops since January 20, 1778. George Washington established his headquarters there in 1779. In 1780, Benedict Arnold , then in command of the post, tried unsuccessfully to betray it to the British.

Colonel Sylvanus Thayer, superintendent at West Point from 1817 to 1833 is credited with instituting the high standards of discipline and scholarship for which the Academy is known today. Under Thayer's tenure, cadets were trained as civil engineers as well as soldiers. After graduation from West Point, commissioned officers put their technical skills to work for the U.S. government in construction of canals, roads, railroads, and other internal improvements needed to facilitate westward expansion. Daily Staff Women will be allowed next year to attend the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), a state-funded school. They will be required to live under the same rules as the men attending the academy, which sounds fair at first, but warrants taking a closer look. VMI has refused to put locks on the doors of the barracks for female cadets. These female cadets are not only the extreme minority, but are also the target of harassment from male cadets who do not want to see VMI turn co-ed. Just last week, Kathy Kreye, a student who had planned on intending VMI next year, was waiting at a stop light when a car pulled up next to her. The man in the car rolled down the window and shouted that she would be killed if she tried to attend VMI. Afraid for her life, she decided to attend Virginia Tech instead. "Female cadets will be treated precisely as we treat male cadets," said Maj. Gen. Bunting of VMI. Yes, female cadets will be treated "precisely" as the male cadets, at the price of their safety. Even the Citadel, which admitted women last year under court order, has provided locks for the women's barracks.

• "McDonald's collection permanently corrects the view that Jefferson was the academy's 'accidental founder.' The contributors illuminate the complexity of Jefferson's motives as well as the larger context in which his decision was made. Taken together, the essays offer a compelling story of one of Jefferson's most unlikely, but most enduring, accomplishments."
Thomas Jefferson's
Military Academy:
Founding West Point
Edited by Robert M. S. McDonald 272 pages, 6 x 9
Why did Thomas Jefferson, who claimed to abhor war and fear standing armies, in 1802 establish the United States Military Academy? For more than two centuries this question has received scant attention, despite the significant contributions of both Jefferson and West Point to American history. Thomas Jefferson's Military Academy Written in clear and accessible prose, Thomas Jefferson's Military Academy should appeal to scholars and general readers interested in military history and the founding generation.

    No. 94-1941.
    Argued January 17, 1996
    Decided June 26, 1996
Held: Parties who seek to defend gender-based government action must demonstrate an "exceedingly persuasive justification" for that action. E.g., Mississippi Univ. for Women v. Hogan, 458 U.S. 718, 724 . Neither federal nor state government acts compatibly with equal protection when a law or official policy denies to women, simply because they are women, full citizenship stature-equal opportunity to aspire, achieve, participate in and contribute to society based on their individual talents and capacities. To meet the burden of justification, a State must show ``at least that the [challenged] classification serves `important governmental objectives and that the discriminatory means employed' are `substantially related to the achievement of those objectives.'" Ibid., quoting Wengler v. Druggists Mutual Ins. Co., 446 U.S. 142, 150
