April 19, 2005 Bonds of friendship are often born out of dire circumstances. Predawn wakeup calls in cramped barracks in an isolated, tiny town in Virginia left then-19-year olds Carlos Rogers and Jay Ratliff despondent. When they both discovered that they would rather be in Auburn, Ala., preparing for their freshman year in college, a bond was formed.

Season Wrap-Up
The entire team, coaches and players alike, had very high expectations going into this basketball season. Despite only having two returning players from the year before, senior Dylan Feathers and junior Brandon Caleb, expectation were high based on the athleticism of the players on the team. Unfortunately, the team was never able to live up to the potential and put everything together, ending the season with a very disappointing 3-17 record. The Blue Devils were led in scoring by senior center Larrin Webster, averaging 11.65 points per game. He was followed in scoring by junior point guard Jamal Schulters with 9.95 points per game, senior forward Jamel Harper with 9.58 points per game, and senior shooting guard Dylan Feathers with 8 points per game. Larrin Webster also led the team in rebounding, averaging 6.53 rebounds per game, followed by junior Brandon Caleb with 6.27 rebounds per game.

Although one of the leading U.S. military institutions, it grants degrees in engineering, science, and the liberal arts. During the Civil War, the institute's corps of cadets served as a unit in the Confederate army under Gen. T. J. (Stonewall) Jackson. VMI excluded women from the corps of cadets into the 1990s. In 1995, a state-sponsored Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership was opened at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va., as a parallel program for women after their exclusion from VMI was challenged in the courts. The U.S. Supreme Court, however, ruled (1996) that VMI, as a state-supported school, had to admit women. VMI did so in 1997, and two years later its first female cadets graduated. var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt";

Overview
Academy graduates are awarded a Bachelor of Science degree and commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army. They must serve a minimum of five years on active duty followed by three years in the reserves. Unlike virtually all other bachelor-degree granting institutions in the U.S. (but like the other military academies), the Academy does not refer to its students as freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors; they are instead officially called "fourth class," "third class," "second class," and "first class." Colloquially, freshmen are "plebes"; sophomores, "yearlings" or "yuks"; juniors, "cows"; seniors, "firsties." The Military Academy's sports teams were historically called The Black Knights of the Hudson, but the nickname has been officially shortened to Black Knights. U.S. sports media use

Home > Becoming Americans Again World War I, World War II, and the Cold War accelerated the integration of Virginia back into the national mainstream. They transformed the state from a rural to a primarily urban one, from a poor to a relatively affluent one, and from a state with few non-natives to one with many.
Woodrow Wilson
Full view and description
World War I A Virginia-born president, Woodrow Wilson, led the nation to war against the German, Austrian, and Ottoman empires in 1917 and 1918. Virginians welcomed the jobs created by the huge guncotton (explosive) plant at Hopewell and the growth of the nation's largest naval base at Norfolk. They also mourned the loss of 1,200 Virginians who gave their lives in the nation's service. At just nineteen months, however, American participation in the war was too short to alter Virginia's economic, social, or political systems permanently. But it did hasten industrialization, urbanization, and the exodus of African Americans to the North. The treaties that ended World War I were regarded as unsatisfactory in many quarters and gave rise to the birth of Nazism and the emergence of Adolf Hitler in Germany. Assuming power in 1933, Hitler aimed to establish a thorough totalitarian state. Soon it became equally apparent that he had territorial ambitions on other states. But Americans took little interest in these matters, even after Hitler invaded Poland in 1939. Only the sudden, totally unexpected collapse of France after a mere six-week campaign galvanized American opinion. The result was an American defense buildup that had enormous consequences in Virginia.
