D-Lib Magazine October 1997 ISSN 1082-9873 Clips and Pointers University of California Announces the California Digital Library Richard E. Lucier to Head the New Service October 14, 1997, San Francisco. The newly-created California Digital Library aims to integrate the holdings of the nine universities of the UC system and provide international access to the collections via the Internet. The university also announced plans to join with the California State Library, the California Library Association, and the California Library Services Board to extend the new digital library into development of similar services for the state's library users. The charter collection of the new service will focus on science, technology, and industry, building on existing technologies (e.g., MELVYL) and digitized materials, such as those at UC Berkeley (see, for example, The Bancroft Library Pictorial Collections UC Santa Barbara , and the California Museum of Photography at UC Riverside . There has been substantial interest in creating and managing digital content at many institutions in the state, such as initiatives undertaken by The Getty and the College of Siskiyous , which has converted portions of John Muir's diaries; future partnerships with other organizations are also envisioned.

He has worked on several projects, including the new FirstSearch, Pinyin record translation, and Web Characterization. He is currently working on the Virtual International Authorities project. Since the 1980’s, he has been involved in information technology, standards and international co-operation. He was Head of Development at Pica (the national centre for library automation) in The Netherlands, and Information Technology consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, working on metadata, interoperability standards and cultural diversity in IT. He is a member of the Advisory Committee of the MIReG (Managing Information Resources in e-Government), a work item under the IDA (Interchange of Documents between Administrations) Programme of the European Commission. Before joining DCMI in his current role, he was a member of the DCMI Advisory Committee and chair of the DCMI Government Working Group. Welcome to the new website for the Council of State Archivists! At its July 2005 annual meeting in Richmond, Virginia, the Council of State Historical Records Coordinators (COSHRC) voted to change the name of the organization to the Council of State Archivists (CoSA). The new, more descriptive name will help the Council with its increasingly visible work in outreach and advocacy. The name change becomes official on October 1, 2005.
