Postdoctoral Fellowship for Humanists in Scholarly Information Resources
The University of Virginia Library offers a one-year CLIR fellowship focusing on one or more of the less-commonly taught languages (e.g., Arabic, Middle Eastern, East Asian languages); art or architectural history; history; or literature. UVa will consider an application in another area if a compelling case is made and if the relevant academic department expresses keen interest. The Fellow will work collaboratively with the relevant academic department(s) and with one of the Library's digital public service units and the appropriate discipline-oriented department (e.g., Humanities and Social Science Services, the Fine Arts Library, or Special Collections). Examples of potential fellowship projects are:
  • The assessment and collection of digital research projects , working with faculty and librarians to determine if and how to collect a born-digital research project and ensure access to it. The Fellow would work through problems related to collection-development policies, cataloging, preservation, knowledge representation, and digital library design.

Census of American Studies Resources on the Web
The Census of American Studies Resources on the Web supports the creation, discovery, and delivery of an annotated directory of American Studies resources on the web. Entries in the directory are proposed by members of the larger American Studies community, reviewed, and, if accepted, annotated, categorized, and added to the directory. The project was a collaboration with the American Studies graduate program at UVA and the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities, funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation. The resource was realized through a local customization of the Scout Portal Toolkit.

    ARL Bimonthly Report
October/December 2003 Using Data to Make Choices: The Balanced Scorecard at the University of Virginia Library

by Jim Self, Director of Management Information Services, University of Virginia Library In early 2001 the University of Virginia (U.Va.) Library began implementation of the Balanced Scorecard. This initiative continues a long history of collecting and using data to improve services, collections, and processes at the U.Va. Library. The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) allows an organization to focus on a relatively small number of carefully chosen measurements. These measures are aligned with the library mission and strategies, and they provide a quick but comprehensive picture of organizational performance. The concept dates from a 1992 article in the Harvard Business Review by Kaplan and Norton. The scorecard was designed for private business, but is increasingly being used by governmental and nonprofit organizations. In 2001 ARL and OCLC sponsored a three-day forum on performance measures, which featured the Balanced Scorecard. Several German libraries, under the leadership of the German Research Council, have implemented the Balanced Scorecard.
