Bill Could Ban Gay News From Virginia Libraries
by 365Gay.com Newscenter Staff Posted: January 12, 2005 12:01 a.m. ET
(Richmond, Virginia) Two bills that would require any public library that receives state funds to install filtering software on its computers could result in a ban on sites providing gay community news and information. The lawmakers who have proposed the legislation say it is necessary to protect children from unwittingly stumbling across pornography while using the Internet at their local libraries. The House bill's sponsor, Del. Samuel Nixon, Jr. (R-Chesterfield) unveiled his bill at a press conference for the conservative Family Foundation. Nixon is also a backer of a state constitutional ban on same-sex civil unions. The Senate bill was filed by Sen. Mark Obenshain (R-Harrisonburg). The bill would simply put Virginia in line with federal law, said Nixon, who filed a similar bill last session that was killed in committee. A 2000 federal law mandated that public libraries put blocking technology on computers as a condition for receiving federal money. The U.S. Supreme Court in 2003 upheld the use of anti-pornography Internet filters in public libraries.

Virginia libraries will stamp out their ink stamps
By Trudy Walsh
GCN Staff
The thud of ink-stamping will soon vanish from public libraries in Fairfax County, Va. Instead patrons will receive receipts listing each checked-out item with its due date.
Library director Edwin S. Clay III estimated the county will save more than $59,500 in the first year, because branch librarians now spend up to four hours per day stamping due dates onto books.
The receipts will be generated by the Unicorn tracking system from Sirsi Corp. of Huntsville, Ala., running on a Sun Microsystems Inc. server and using an Oracle Corp. database. For Virginia libraries (or DC with old VA code/statute collections)
From: JANET Baxter ( Jbaxter@GKGLAW.com
Date: I am trying to obtain copies of the prior language for Virginia Code section 5.1-5, Licensing of aircraft. The citations are Code 1950, Sec.5-5; 1966, c. 576; 1970, c. 717; 1974, c. 431; 1979, c. 272; and 1980, c. 721.
If anyone keeps old volumes or pocket parts which would reflect those changes, it would be greatly appreciated if you would contact me! (My other alternative is probably to contact the legislative status/research arm of the legislature, which would probably take longer than the attorney has...).
