Collection Policies COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY
Geography
Purpose General Collecting Guidelines Collecting Codes PURPOSE At the graduate level, the department offers, through Graduate Programs in International Studies, the M.A. and Ph.D in international studies. Current areas for student concentration are: conflict and cooperation including security studies and collective security, international relations, American foreign policy, political economy and development, and transnational issues including migration and democratization studies. Regional specializations are available in Sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, Latin America, Middle East, Scandinavia and the Baltic, Eastern and Western Europe, and the former Soviet Union. The Department of Political Science and Geography offers an undergraduate and graduate certification in remote sensing for coastal environmental analysis. This provides an interdisciplinary program for students wishing to pursue careers in coastal management and research, remote sensing, or geographic information systems (GIS) applications. The geography collection additionally supports a variety of other undergraduate and graduate level programs at ODU. At the undergraduate level, geography courses are integrated into the "perspectives - social sciences" area of the general education program. The geography collection also supports undergraduate work in the areas of political science, sociology, women's studies and economics. At the graduate level, the geography collection supports work in urban studies, women's studies, education, and sociology. Materials in physical geography, remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) also support undergraduate, graduate and faculty research in the areas of oceanography and geology. As Old Dominion University expands its emphasis on internationalization in all areas, the geography collection will become an increasingly crucial area of the collection.

    Prince William County
Prince William was formed in 1730 and named by the General Assembly after the second son of George II. Prince William was made the Duke of Cumberland in 1726 when he was five years old, so he was all of nine years old when honored by the name of the new county. Cumberland County and Cumberland Gap are also named after him. King George II and his wife Caroline liked Prince William far better than his older brother Frederick , but Prince William still missed a chance at becoming king after his Frederick died in 1751. Instead, Parliament and the King's ministers chose the late Frederick's oldest son, George, to become King George III. Since Fredericks son (Prince William's nephew) was only 13 years old at the time, his mother Augusta was prepared to serve as regent if necessary until the new Prince of Wales turned 18. However, George II lived nine more years until 1760, when young George III was crowned. His 39-year old uncle remained the Duke of Cumbeland. Prince William was trained initially to be Lord High Admiral of the British Navy , but he preferred the army. During the War of Austrian Succession on the continent, he was wounded in the Battle of Dettingen. Today's Episcopal Parish of Dettingen in Prince William County is named after that British victory.

Geography of the Southern Colonies Matt S., and Scott F. The southern colonies' geography is slightly different that the Middle Colonies and the New England colonies. The Southern Colonies have a warm climate, great bays, broad rivers, swamps and thick rich soil, while the middle colonies have mild weather, semi-rich soid and a rugged coast. Maryland is the northernmost of the southern colonies. On a map, Maryland looks like a revolver. It's nozzle point westward towards the Appalachian Mountains. Maryland is divided into five section, the Appalachian Plateau, the Appalachian Ridge and Valley, the Blue Ridge and the Atlantic Coastal Plain. It's highest point, Backbone Mountain, stands 3,360 feet. Georgia, which you probably know from the Olympics, is the southernmost of the original 13 colonies. It is also the biggest state east of the Mississippi River. A long time ago, Georgia lay beneath the ocean. Gradually, it got pushed up by the earth's crust. Georgia is covered with marshes, mountains and valley lakes. Virginia has a land area of 39,578 square miles, of which 1,063 are inland water. Virginia is a state where the temperature ranges from 36F to 95F. Virginia is a multi-climate state. It has wetlands, flat lands and mountains.Virignia's highest point is 5,729 feet, which is Mt.
