The geography of Political Control. virginia City, Montana is a small plot ofland (the bright red square at the left end of the map of Dakota Territory)
http://www.virginiacity.com/hv07.htm
The Geography of Political Control Virginia City, Montana is a small plot of land (the bright red square at the left end of the map of Dakota Territory) which has been the center of many and various conflicts. As the Civil War began in 1861, that land was in Dakota Territory, and the capitol which controlled it was Yankton, D.T., 2,500 miles away by trail. That amounts to no political control at all. In 1915, Al Noyes copied material from a register that has since disappeared. He preserved the lost documents in his history. "We find another matter that is peculiar. On the 4th day of April, 1863, a deed was given by David Thompson, et al., to James D. Doty, all in Idaho Territory. On the Fifth day of April, 1863, a deed was given by John Ault, to Jack Allport, all in Dakota Territory. There must have been some misunderstanding as to what particular portion of the United States they were in." (From Noyes, Alva J. (Al). A History of Southern Montana, State Publishing: Helena, 1915) The cause of that glitch, reported by Noyes, was Lincoln's solution to the lack of his ability to control of the strategic flow of gold from the Oro Fino area of mines on the west side of the Rocky Mountains. The gold was vulnerable to being diverted to the South. There it could support the war efforts of the Confederate States. The gold fields were in Washington Territory on the west of the mountains. Those gold fields in 1862 were seven hundred miles from the capitol, Yakima, Washington Territory. President Lincoln's solution was to slice out the area including the gold fields. This he combined with part of Dakota Territory, including what was to become Virginia City. In April 1863, Congress established Idaho Territory, with the capitol very near the gold, in Lewiston, I.T. Now the gold fields could be controlled by the local Territorial Government in favor of Lincoln's war efforts.

Geography Geographic Center of the U.S.
Source: U.S. Geological Survey, Dept. of the Interior There is no generally accepted definition of geographic center and no uniform method for determining it. Following the U.S. Geological Survey, the geographic center of an area is defined here as the center of gravity of the surface, or that point on which the surface would balance if it were a plane of uniform thickness. All localities in the following list, therefore, are approximate. No marked or monumented point has been established by any government agency as the geographic center of either the 50 states, the conterminous U.S., or the North American continent. A monument was erected in Lebanon, KS, the conterminous U.S. center, by a group of citizens. A cairn in Rugby, ND, marks the center of the North American continent. high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
  • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
  • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
  • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
  • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

Abbreviation:
WV In 1861, Virginians in the northwestern part of the state defied Virginia's secession from the United States. The region chose to remain in the Union and form a new state. West Virginia was admitted as the 35th state into the Union in 1863, after conditions requiring the gradual emancipation of slaves had been met. The state motto is "Mountaineers are always free", and West Virginia lives up to its nickname of the "Mountain State". With an average altitude of 1,500 feet above sea level, it's the highest of any state east of the Mississippi River. For a long time, West Virginia was a leading producer of coal in North America, but many people left to pursue better employment opportunities. That trend has turned around, and now the state's economy is in a more stable condition. West Virginia, in the Appalachian Highlands, has some of the most rugged land in the United States. The state has very few large areas of level ground, except for strips of valley land that lie along the larger rivers. Forests of valuable hardwood trees grow on the mountain slopes and vast mineral deposits lie under the ground. Beautiful scenery, mineral springs and a variety of wildlife attracts tourists, campers, hunters and fishing enthusiasts.

Title: Cities and Towns of the United States Abstract:
This map layer includes cities in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These cities were collected from the 1970 National Atlas of the United States. Where applicable, U.S. Census Bureau codes for named populated places were associated with each name to allow additional information to be attached. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) was also used as a source for additional information. This is a revised version of the December 2003 map layer.
