d) locating Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, and Richmond, the capital of Virginia, on a United States map. SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
  • Have students take turns locating Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia, on a variety of maps.
  • Review the name of our country and where it is located on a world map and globe. Identify the shape and location of our country on a map.
  • Discuss the capital city of the United States, which is where the President and lawmakers live and work. Identify Washington, D. C. and locate it on a map of the United States.
  • Discuss the symbol used to represent cities on maps (usually a dot) and the symbols used to represent state capitals (usually a star) and compare those to the symbol used to represent the country’s capital (usually a bigger, bolder star or a circled star).
  • Use the student-created outline of the United States and direct students to label the capital city with a star and a circle.
  • Visit a Web site or share tourist guides of Washington, D. C. Discuss why this city is so important to our country and discuss or review some of the national monuments and symbols that are important to us as citizens.

Virginia
is one of the Southeastern United States, on the Atlantic coast. Its entire Western border is in the Appalachian mountians, which run from Southwest to Northeast. Approaching from the ocean, one would enter the great port city of Norfolk , first passing its even more populous suburb, Virginia Beach. Neighboring cities include Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth and Chesapeake . This area is generally called Hampton Roads. It is also known as the Tidewater, together with everything east of Washington and Richmond.
(Bear in mind that lawyers in Virginia typically practice in several counties and cities.)
Two hours West of Norfolk is Richmond , the capital. Two hours Northwest of Richmond is Charlottesville , just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains . Thomas Jefferson lived near there. Beyond these mountains lies the great Shennandoah Valley , and then the Allegheny mountains and desolateWest Virginia, a completely separate State which is not affiliated in any way with Virginia.
Two hours North of Richmond, Washington, D.C., the U.S.'s capital, lies in an independent district between Virginia and Maryland.

The Art of Ancient Mali Geography P resent-day Mali, at nearly twice the size of Texas, is the largest country in West Africa. Mali is bordered by seven other countries: Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Mauritania. Most of the northern half of Mali falls within the largest desert on the planet, the Sahara. The central section of Mali is made up of semi-arid land that is part of a larger region known as the Sahel. Sahel is an Arabic word meaning, “shore,” although, in this case, it can be thought of as the shore of the desert rather than the ocean. The Sahel is nearly 3,000 miles long and from 200 to 700 miles wide in a span across the continent of Africa. It is an area that is gradually being taken over by the southward creep of the Sahara Desert. In the southwestern region of Mali, rainfall and rivers are more plentiful and the climate is slightly more hospitable. Mali's most important geographic feature is the Niger River. The Niger River stretches over 2,500 miles through four countries: Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria. It arches up alongside the Sahara until it turns south towards the sea. Mali sits at the top of this arc, where the river spreads out and opens into an inland delta. Only about 2 percent of Mali is arable. In this dry climate, it is the Niger River that provides the main source of subsistence, providing fish, drinking water, and water for farming. Growing food in this region depends on the annual flooding of the Niger River, which has traditionally provided fertile plains along its banks.

Can you imagine what that might do to commuter patterns and property values in the two cities? Transportation as we know it will change in the future, bringing some radical changes in the fortunes of some places, according to a new book co-authored by Paul Knox, Distinguished Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning at Virginia Tech and Sallie Marston, professor of geography at the Universeity of Arizona ( Places and Regions in Global Context , Prentice Hall in 1997). "The first generation of smart cars and trucks, with onboard microprocessor-based electronics, is already on the road," Knox says. High-speed rail systems are already in place in parts of Europe, and are expanding rapidly. Plans for a new Japanese "rocket plane" are on the drawing board. Over the long term, regions having access to the new modes of transportation will prosper, while those without access will be passed by.

3rd Fittest America's Fattest Cities 2004 Main Survey sources and methods Ways for any city to become fitter Let us know what you think ... America's Fattest Cities 2000 Virginia Beach is the 3rd fittest city in America this year, up from 8th last year. Much of this has to do with a dramatic turnaround in TV viewing. Virginia Beach-area residents are no longer the couch potatoes they were last year, when they had the third highest viewing rate among all cities in our survey. This year, they have the second lowest viewing rate among all 50 cities surveyed - Minneapolis grabbed the #1 slot, according to Nielsen Media Research. Residents are enjoying fitness walking and bicycling out in the fresh air. Locals are on the right track for a healthy lifestyle, by choosing fruit and veggies over donuts, according to CDC's Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance Survey. One area that calls for improvement is access to health care. Two years in a row, Virginia Beach has been ranked second to last nationwide for this category. The good news is that locals are taking pleasure in the plentiful amenities Virginia Beach has to offer, such as golf courses, city parks and outdoor basketball courts.
