Where is Southwest Virginia?
Today, the southwestern edge of Virginia is Cumberland Gap. At one time, however, Virginia stretched much further west. After Virginia ceded its western land claims to the new national government in the 1780's, the southwestern edge of the state was on the Mississippi River. Kentucky became an independent state in 1792, so at that point Virginia no longer included the Cumberland River watershed west of the Allegheny Front. The shape of Virginia's western boundaries changed again after West Virginia became an independent state in 1863, leaving only a tiny portion of the Levisa Fork, Big Sandy, and Tug Fork watersheds in what became Southwest Virginia.
Source: National Biological Information Infrastructure Not all of the Virginia mountains are in the southwestern part of the state. However, the mountains are significant barriers to travel there - and the rivers run the wrong way. Well, "wrong" is a relative term, but most of Southwest Virginia is in the Tennessee River watershed. If you consider Pulaski, Giles, and Bland counties to be "Southwest Virginia," thenthe New River watershed still drains away from the Atlantic Ocean. So one way to define the region is by the Eastern Continental Divide, with all the lands west of the divide in Southwest Virginia.

Edge Cities
There were a hundred thousand shapes and substances of incompleteness, wildly mingled out of their places, upside down, burrowing in the earth, aspiring in the earth, moldering in the water, and unintelligible as in any dream. - Charles Dickens on London in 1848; Garreau calls this quote the "best one-sentence description of Edge City extant." They're called suburban business districts, major diversified centers, suburban cores, minicities, suburban activity centers, cities of realms, galactic cities, urban subcenters, pepperoni-pizza cities, superburbia, technoburbs, nucleations, disurbs, service cities, perimeter cities, peripheral centers, urban villages, and suburban downtowns but the name that's now most commonly used for places that the foregoing terms describe is "edge cities." The term "edge cities" was coined by Washington Post journalist and author Joel Garreau in his 1991 book Edge City: Life on the New Frontier.

Lost counties, cities and towns of Virginia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Lost counties, cities and towns of Virginia are those which formerly existed in the English Colony of Virginia or the Commonwealth of Virginia as one of the United States This article will focus on the some of the lost cities counties, and towns (both incorporated and not) once located in Virginia. At least at the local level, most (if not all) are not truly lost, as was North Carolina 's Lost Colony from Roanoke Island . For most, it is known with a high degree of certainty (and some secrecy in a few instances) what became of them. Some of these "lost" communities which are now in other states currently exist under their prior names, and surely the citizens of each do not consider them to be "lost" at all. Within Virginia, most records seem to prefer the word "extinct" as opposed to "lost." In this article, the words should be considered to have the same meaning. One former Virginia county now forms an entire state. A wave of consolidations of local governments in eastern Virginia in the 20th century (from 1952-1976) eliminated 5 counties, 3 cities, and 1 incorporated town, but did result in creation of 2 brand new cities, and expansion of one city from 2 to 250 square miles (5 to 650 km²). Now, even the Great Dismal Swamp is located in two Virginia cities!
