Year after year, graduating seniors in Interdisciplinary Studies say the high level of accessibility of their professors is what they value most about their UW-Green Bay experience. Our students enjoy the same quality of teaching and one-on-one access as their on-campus counterparts because the same UW-Green Bay faculty who teach on campus also teach the Extended degree courses. Currently, about 35 UW-Green Bay professors from an array of disciplines teach in the Extended Degree Program. Breznay, Peter T.

Patient Safety Literature Current Awareness Alert
May #2, 2003
The NPSF Information Resource Center, in an effort to monitor the landscape of patient safety, routinely identifies articles that may be of interest to the patient safety community. This twice-monthly publication is not an exhaustive list of citations, but does pinpoint items of interest from a wide array of publications. Copies of the articles may be obtained through your local medical or public library and the web. This list is submitted twice a month to patientsafety-L as a service to help subscribers stay aware of relevant literature. The NPSF invites authors to submit materials to us for possible inclusion in future lists of this nature. To view previous patient safety current awareness listings, please visit the list archives at http://patientsafety-l@listserv.npsf.org/archives/index.html Our thanks go to Ilene Corina, Jennifer Dingman, Benjamin Grasso, Theresa Pape, Lawrence Way and Donna Young for their contributions to this edition of Current Awareness. 1. Task Force Sets Goals For Higher Achieving High Schools Posted: July 26th, 2005
Charleston, W.Va. - The West Virginia Board of Education received a report regarding student success in West Virginia High Schools during its July meeting in Charleston. A task force charged with reviewing the state’s high schools met earlier this year to make recommendations as to how to improve various areas of high school education.
The task force included members of the business, post secondary education, superintendents, high school principals, teachers, teacher organizations, members of the West Virginia Board of Education, West Virginia Department of Education staff and parents.
The plan proposed to the State Board by the task force aims to improve high school curriculum, instruction school effectiveness and student, family and community support. As part of the plan, the group recommends redesigning the West Virginia high school experience by increasing learning opportunities for students. It further recommends improving “student transitioning” from middle grades to high school and from high school to post secondary education and or work. Other recommendations include supporting West Virginia student success with excellent teachers and principals and increasing the value of the West Virginia high school diploma.
The report also lists goals the task force set for high schools. The goals, which are based on the Framework for High Performing Schools, include students’ academic and technical performance equaling or exceeding national averages; providing students the opportunity to complete accelerated courses and graduate with college credit and/or workplace credentials; educating students with highly qualified personnel who effectively use research-based instructional strategies; and involving students’ families and communities to assure that all schools have strategies for providing support to address social, emotional and academic needs, among others.

Giftedness and the Gifted: What's It All About?

Educators have always supported and challenged the abilities of the gifted and talented. However, only in the twentieth century has an academic discipline existed to provide training for teachers of high potential youth. In the United States alone, over 100 universities offer courses and degree or certificate programs. This Digest examines the roles of teachers of the gifted and talented, the roles of regular classroom teachers, and ways they work together. It also discusses necessary qualifications, ways to locate programs, and career opportunities in this field.

Filed under: Education September is just around the corner, and that means back to school for many of you. Today, the idea of going to school without a computer is almost unheard of. Apple has offered some sweet deals for students recently, and that's got me wondering: What's your Mac rig for school, and how do you use it (other than basic word processing, of course)? Are you using iMovie for any projects? Is iCal keeping you on schedule? Recording lectures with your iPod? Spill it, folks. Mom and dad want to know what they're paying for.
