Special Educational Needs and the Foreign Service Child
There are unique challenges inherent in raising children with special needs, and this is especially so in the internationally mobile lifestyle of the Foreign Service. There has been a significant effort to increase the number of programs for children with special needs in American-international schools around the world. However, the quality of these programs varies greatly from school to school, and even from year to year. While more children who have mild learning disabilities are adequately served in international schools, children with moderate to severe disabilities still encounter major challenges. In addition to the lack of available programs overseas, very often there is also a lack of other support or therapeutic specialists to serve the requirements of special needs children. The Family Liaison Office strongly urges families to carefully research their options before bidding on and accepting an overseas assignment. There are several offices in the Department of State that work together to assist families of children with special needs. Special Needs Resource Information from the Department of State . Parents' Resources
Dear William and Mary Parent: During the past few years, you have heard me and several of my fellow university presidents warn of the consequences of underfunding Virginia's public institutions of higher education. In recent years, the warnings have become more urgent. Now, before damage to our universities becomes irreversible, the presidents of the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech and I are advancing a proposal that we believe will protect the quality of our core educational programs while recognizing the severity of the Commonwealth's financial challenge. If adopted, our proposal will assure that our students will continue to enjoy excellent educational programs and that the value of the degrees they earn will remain high.

Parent Resource Center
Special Ed. Advisory Committee (SEAC) SEAC?! What’s a SEAC? In a nutshell a SEAC is a Special Education Advisory Committee. Here in Virginia every school district is mandated, via our Special Education Regulations, to have one. The main purpose of each SEAC is to help the school district identify unmet systemic needs in special education. In Hanover County the SEAC identifies a variety of unmet needs by having Public Comment at each of our meetings, a review of past identified unmet needs and reports, inviting an array of speakers, and by touching base with students, parents, teachers and administrators. One of the most difficult tasks we face as a committee is remembering the purpose of the SEAC. Whenever I speak to new members, or to interested parties, I always remind them that individual concerns need to be dealt with on an individual basis. That’s hard for some of us to separate out. Another thing I tell people who are interested in the committee is that there is always room for change, but positive change is a slow process.
