New Case Studies Back to New Case Studies An Assessment of General Education Mathematics Courses Contribution to Quantitative Literacy at Virginia Commonwealth University Aimee J. Ellington Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the role general education mathematics courses play in the development of the quantitative reasoning skills of students enrolled in those courses.  The students’ posttest results on a series of quantitative literacy questions were statistically compared with pretest baseline results.  The assessment revealed that the quantitative reasoning skills of students are improved through participation in general education mathematics courses. Background and Purpose The twenty first century promises to be an age of information and technology.  Much of the information we gather throughout a normal day is quantitative data.  Understanding the world and all of its complexities requires a strong sense of numerical data and the quantitative measures used to gather and evaluate numbers.  Quantitative literacy or numeracy, as it is sometimes called, is an essential skill for well-informed citizens.  In a typical college or university, at least half of the population consists of students majoring in a field that is not based in science, engineering, or mathematics.  As one quantitative literacy expert recently stated, “numeracy, not calculus, is the key to understanding our data-drenched society”

VIRGINIA ATTORNEY GENERAL UNDERMINES ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION FOR IMMIGRANT STUDENTS Washington, DC - [Raul Yzaguirre, President and CEO of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national constituency-based Hispanic civil rights organization in the United States, issued the following statement at an educational forum hosted today by the Immigrant Educational Rights Coalition of Virginia. The statement is in response to a September 5, 2002, memorandum from the Virginia Attorney General’s Office regarding the admission and reporting of undocumented students at Virginia public colleges and universities.] In a memorandum to Virginia public colleges and universities dated September 5, 2002, the Office of Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore strongly encouraged the Commonwealth’s colleges and universities to bar undocumented immigrant students from admission despite the fact that no federal or state law precludes an institution from admitting these students. Even worse, the memorandum recommended that Virginia public institutions report students suspected of being undocumented to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). In addition, on Monday, December 16, Attorney General Kilgore announced plans to submit legislation to further limit immigrants’ access to higher education by denying colleges and universities the option to provide in-state tuition to undocumented immigrant students.

“If we can organize the Southern States for massive resistance to this order I think that in time the rest of the country will realize that racial integration is not going to be accepted in the South.” With these words, Senator Harry Flood Byrd launched Massive Resistance, a deliberate campaign of delay and obfuscation. As head of the commonwealth’s most powerful political organization, known as the “Byrd Machine,” Byrd, a former governor (1926–1930), orchestrated Virginia’s response to the Brown decision. Massive Resistance was intended to slow to a crawl attempts to integrate Virginia’s schools generally and to minimize the effects of integration where it did occur.
