Public Colleges and Universities
The purpose of general education requirements is to provide a fund of common knowledge and essential skills for the educated citizen. All students, regardless of their majors, should be required to study such basic subjects as English, a foreign language, history, philosophy, mathematics, and science. These subjects form a basis for what educated Americans should know. They are the essential ingredients for an informed and thoughtful life. Studies, however, point to a staggering deficit in what undergraduates really know, and what colleges expect them to know. In 1989, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Gallup Organization conducted a survey on what college seniors knew. One-fourth of undergraduates surveyed could not locate Columbus' discovery in the correct half-century, and more than 44 percent did not know when the Civil War took place. Roughly 25 percent thought that Karl Marx's statement"from each according to his ability, to each according to his need . . . "was from the U.S. Constitution. The majority could not identify the major works of Plato, Dante, Milton, Jane Austen, and Dostoevsky. This paucity of undergraduate knowledge led to the 1989 report, 50 Hours: A Core Curriculum for College Students, wherein the NEH makes recommendations for a model general education program. The report noted that college educators throughout the 1980s spoke of increasing fragmentation of undergraduate curricula, and a need for more structure and coherence.

Ivanhoe, Virginia If you know of other Ivanhoe sites, or any informative or interesting information we have not provided about this community, please let us know . If you would like to contribute more information or photos of Ivanhoe, please do . The area code for all is 276. Information in the following section was provided by the Ivanhoe Civic League, PO Box 201, Ivanhoe, VA 24350. Welcome to Ivanhoe Ivanhoe is a small community located in a beautiful valley near Cripple Creek, which enters the New River in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Southwest Virginia. The Ivanhoe Civic League was organized in 1986 when the people in the community came together to protest the proposed sale of the Industrial Park on New River. In the beginning the league's main purpose was to recruit an industry for Ivanhoe. Now several years later we strive to educate ourselves so we can better nurture and develop the community utilizing our own resources - Ivanhoe citizens. The league contains every aspect of society. The community is made up of Caucasian, African-American, Native American and Hispanics. We are represented by both young and old, as well as rich and poor. We feel we are poor in material wealth, but very rich in cultural enhancements. The growing knowledge and interest in our numerous programs during the past years has seen the majority of the community participating in league functions. Here are some highlights of the league's main programs: Education: The education program consists of community-based Adult Basic Education/General Education Development (ABE/GED), with 46 graduates to date. Also included are college classes, youth tutorials that include college and career guidance, professional development workshops and computer and adult literacy. In 1993 a vocational component rehabilitated an historic structure in Ivanhoe to provide office and education facilities for the Ivanhoe Civic League.

From a meager beginning in October of 1872, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, popularly known as Virginia Tech , has evolved into a comprehensive university of national and international prominence. Located at Blacksburg, Virginia, the school is Virginia's largest university with 25,600 students and one of the top 50 research institutions in the nation, it is an institution that firmly embraces a history of putting knowledge to work. That tradition is rooted in our motto, Ut Prosim: "That I May Serve," and our land-grant missions of instruction, research, and solving the problems of society through public service and outreach activities. Our eight colleges (agriculture, architecture, arts/sciences, business, human resources/education, engineering, natural resources, and veterinary medicine) offer more degree programs than any other university in the state with 60 undergraduate and 110 graduate programs. Virginia Tech is one of the nation's leaders in developing and using new instructional technologies. The schools athletic department known as The Hokies , has brought the college national attention. June 14, 1943, Decided MR. JUSTICE JACKSON delivered the opinion of the Court. Following the decision by this Court on June 3, 1940, in Minersville School District v. Gobitis , 310 U.S. 586, the West Virginia legislature amended its statutes to require all schools therein to conduct courses of instruction in history, civics, and in the Constitutions of the United States and of the State "for the purpose of teaching, fostering and perpetuating the ideals, principles and spirit of Americanism, and increasing the knowledge of the organization and machinery of the government." Appellant Board of Education was directed, with advice of the State Superintendent of Schools, to "prescribe the courses of study covering these subjects" for public schools. The Act made it the duty of private, parochial and denominational schools to prescribe courses of study "similar to those required for the public schools." The Board of Education on January 9, 1942, adopted a resolution containing recitals taken largely from the Court's

Education Department investigates U. Va. admissions policies (12/08/04) [RICHMOND, Va.] "The U.S. Department of Education's civil-rights office is investigating a complaint that the University of Virginia discriminates against white applicants. "The complaint was filed after the Charlottesville university denied admission to a white male student from New York for a spot in fall 2003's incoming undergraduate class. " 'Many kids with far less qualifications had already been accepted to the university in the name of diversity,' the student's father said in his complaint, which was obtained by The Associated Press with names and other identifying information redacted. He added, 'if my son had been a girl or a minority with his grades, test scores and extracurricular activities he would have been admitted to the University on his own with no problem.' "U.Va. spokeswoman Carol Wood confirmed Wednesday that the Office of Civil Rights is reviewing the university's undergraduate admission procedures with Virginia's legal department. She declined to discuss the investigation or the complaint but said that U.Va. considers diversity just one of many factors in determining admission, and the application of each prospective student is thoroughly discussed and debated among a team of reviewers.
