The support of parents and other responsible adults is critical to the development of children and youth. Research is proving that connectedness to parents and school is vital for young people asthey mature. Parents and other significant adults provide the necessary support for school health and physical activity programs to succeed in meeting the needs of young people and their communities. They also supply the guidance that ensures that school health programs reflect community values. Established in 1926, the Society of State Directors of Health, Physical Education and Recreation is a professional association whose members supervise and coordinate programs in health, physical education, and related fields within state departments of education. School Nurse Role in Bioterrorism Emergency Preparedness and Response. Position Statement. Revised. http://www.nasn.org/positions/2005psbioterrorism.pdf (National Association of School Nurses. , Jun 2005) It is the position of the National Association of School Nurses that school nurses should be designated and recognized as first responders to mass casualty emergencies, including those resulting from bioterrorist events. School nurses should be trained in protection, detection, and treatment of victims of such events and in the command and control management techniques of the logistics of such a situation. The strategic position of well-prepared nurses within the school environment has significant potential for minimizing the effects of a bioterrorist attack in school settings and, subsequently, in the community at large 3p. GUIDES:
ACCREDITATION:
The Approved Accrediting Agencies Each of the six regional associations has responsibility for schools in one region of the United States and its territories. Each one has the authority to accredit an entire college or university. And there are also about 80 professional associations, each with authority to accredit either specialized schools or specific departments or programs within a school. Thus, it may be the case, for instance, that the North Central Association (one of the six regional associations) will accredit Dolas University. When this happens, the entire school is accredited, and all its degrees may be called accredited degrees, or more accurately, degrees from an accredited institution. Or it may be the case that just the art department of Dolas University has been accredited by the relevant professional association, in this case the National Association of Schools of Art. If this happens, then only the art majors at Dolas can claim to have accredited degrees. So if an accredited degree is important for your needs, the first question to ask is, "Has the school been accredited by one of the six regional associations?" If the answer is no, then the next question is, "Has the department in which I am interested been accredited by its relevant professional association?"

Welcome From the VATS Project Director, Ken Knorr
As Director of the Virginia Assistive Technology System (VATS), I would like to welcome you to the VATS Website. It is my hope that you will find the information on assistive and information technology to be useful, and it is my expectation that the information is fully accessible to you. Please let me know of your experiences with our website and any ideas for improvement.
VATS has received federal funding from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research since 1990 to develop a statewide comprehensive system of assistive technology (AT), and to assist Virginians with disabilities in accessing assistive and information technology (IT) devices and services. Some of our successes include:
  • Supported passage of “The Virginia Assistive Technology Device Warranties Act”. This act guarantees Virginians with disabilities who use devices the same protection that customers have for “lemon” automobiles.
