    Boarding Program for Troubled Teen?
March 2005 We have a troubled relative who is 13, and out of control. Her immediate family is from out of the country and is not equipped to deal with her current problems, which range from drug use and stealing to dangerous boyfriends and cutting herself, and regularly dissappearing. We have already called the police and Child Protective Services, there is not much they say they can do at this point and we want to see if we can find a safe place for her to be contained, such as a boarding school that would be affordable and effective for us. Please let us know if you know of any schools, camps, programs, or even group homes that would be a good option for us (she has MediCal, and her mother is on Disability). Many thanks for your help. my advice the the family with the ''out of control teen'' is to look on line for therapeutic boarding schools. ''The ASpen group'' is a great network of schools for troubled kids. My son went to Stone Mountain school for boys. It helped him a lot. They have a school for girls in Arizona i think. Good luck. mom of troubled kid

MARGARET'S GRADUATES 29 SENIORS Founded in 1921 as one of the Church Schools in the Diocese of Virginia, and a member of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, St. Margaret's offers a boarding and day college preparatory program for girls in grades 8-12. A diverse student body of 150, representing approximately 12 countries and 14 states, maintains a 6:1 student-faculty ratio, a unique advisor/advisee relationship, and a 99 percent college attendance rate. Located on the banks of the Rappahannock River, in historic Tappahannock, Virginia, St. Margaret's boasts a winning combination: a river front campus in a small town with convenient access to the educational and cultural resources of Richmond, Charlottesville, Williamsburg, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. Students reside in air-conditioned dormitories with resident faculty members on each floor; the latest dorm, the McCuan House opens in September 2005. The school nurses are on campus daily. Meals are served buffet-style in the school dining room. Recent additions to the nine-acre campus include a new library, a student center, art and music studios, a dance studio, darkroom, and a fitness room. The new waterfront Community/Technology Center opened fall 1999. Campus computers are fully networked and include internet and e-mail access throughout all classrooms, the Community/Technology Center, the student center, and all student dorm rooms. A swimming pool, tennis courts, and a fitness room provide after-class recreation.

PREFACE The inspiration for this Special Issue grew out of a meeting of consultants to the Heard Museum. Karen Swisher (Haskell Indian Nations University), Rayna Green (Smithsonian Institution), Tsianina Lomawaima (University of Arizona), and Brenda Child (University of Minnesota), were invited in 1995 by Curator of Fine Art Margaret Archuleta, under the auspices of a National Endowment for the Humanities Planning Grant, to help plan an exhibit on American Indians' boarding school experiences tentatively titled "Our Indian Schools" (scheduled to open at the Heard in the spring of 1999). We hope that this Special Issue will help stimulate continuing research, dialogue, and debate about American Indian people's experiences in, and opinions about, boarding school. It is clear that there is much that remains to be done. Large off-reservation schools, such as Sherman Institute in Riverside, CA, as well as many smaller schools, on and off reservations, remain undocumented. Most of the research to date has focused on the schools prior to World War II. The more contemporary era from the War to the present is wide open, inviting those with the interest and the commitment to help document, preserve, and understand the educational experiences of American Indian people. We are looking forward to what the future will bring. K. Tsianina Lomawaima, Guest Editor

So Your Kid is An Aspiring Artiste?
For students who yearn to perform, in theater, dance or music, these are schools worth knowing about.
So Your Kid is An Aspiring Artiste? For any parent overseas, distance can make it difficult to find the right American school for a child. For those whose kids seem destined for the performing arts, the task is doubly hard: Auditions and school visits can be impossible to arrange. To ease this task, FSJ has researched some highly regarded performing arts schools public and private that you may want to consider. That's not to say that a youngster with a strong desire to play music, sing, act or dance necessarily needs a specialized school. For example, Katie Buck, who grew up in the Foreign Service and who graduated in 1999 as a theater major from Wesleyan University, attended Sidwell Friends School, a highly regarded, and nonspecialized, private secondary school. Buck says, "I don't at all regret going to that school, though I wish I'd taken more acting classes. But at that point I wasn't sure I wanted to narrow myself to the arts." Last year, Buck presented her one-woman play, "I-Site," based on growing up as a "third-culture kid," to the Foreign Service Youth Foundation. She is now living in New York City and working in theater and television. Arguing in favor of a specialized arts school, however, is the limited arts programing that many public schools have nowadays. "When it comes to budget, arts programs are the first to be cut," notes John Mahlmann, executive director of the Music Educators National Conference.

    African-American Richmond:
    Educational Segregation and Desegregation.
This portion of the VBHA is comprised of fourteen oral history interviews conducted in 1992 by Virginia Commonwealth University students with African-Americans residing in the Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area. While the interviews focused on the educational experiences of these individuals, other subjects and issues affecting the lives of African-Americans were also discussed by the participants. The typed transcripts of the oral histories were scanned in 1994 to be included in the Virginia Black History Archives database and are accessible from this site. A listing of the transcripts, with a brief index of topics discussed, can be found below. This oral history project was part of a VCU honors course, EDU 300, Foundations of Education, taught by Dr. Samuel M. Craver in the 1992 spring semester. It was one of several upper-level courses at VCU to be included in the "Illusion v. Reality Project" under a grant from the Ford Foundation. The purpose of the grant, according to Craver, was to stimulate the understanding of cultural diversity in the Richmond area and to collect related materials for the university library's Special Collections and Archives. The grant was the stimulus for what became the library's Virginia Black History Archives.
