Alternative Schools Education
With the quality of most public schools dwindling as a result of increased enrollment and decreased funding, many parents seek alternative schools to educate their children. Effective alternatives include private schools whose focus is a military style of discipline and education. Military schools provide cadets with the traditional college prep curriculum found in public schools, but the quality of teaching often exceeds that found in public school. Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. In addition to a quality education, cadets can expect to have organized daily study time to ensure they complete their assignments and keep from falling behind. Many parents with troubled teens think that the structure and discipline taught in military boarding schools is just what their child needs, but there are actually

Why Internet High School Classes?
The Virginia Internet High School provides flexible, low-cost, and effective online instruction to school divisions throughout the Commonwealth. This statewide instructional network promises to end scheduling conflicts, overloaded classes, and in-school struggles with disruptive, unmotivated students. Virginia's public schools now have a practical means and the resources to teach all high school students in the most instructionally appropriate setting. Although time and distance are no longer obstacles to educating students, a number of questions remain....
Will at-risk, disruptive, or poor attending students learn well in VIHS classes?
These students will certainly learn as well, if not better, than in the convention high school. Most are quite capable, but spend their time in the conventional high school on non-academic pursuits. Placed in a setting where they must perform academically to work their way back into the social community of the conventional high school, they tend to perform. Further, there are no passive learners in an Internet high school . Each student, by the nature of the medium, must be actively engaged to communicate his presence in school.

Education Reform Begins with Alternative Choices O riginally printed in the September 11, 2000 edition of the Richmond Times-Dispatch Lil Tuttle
Luce Education Director Some multiple-choice tests are flawed. Take the recent assessment of the public's attitudes toward the public schools commissioned by Phi Delta Kappa, a professional education association. Kappa/Gallup pollsters asked respondents to select one of three responses about how best to improve public education in America: "reforming the existing public school system," "finding an alternative to the existing system," or "don't know." Translation: You're either for pouring all resources into reforming the public schools (ignoring the kids who need alternatives to succeed), throwing the public schools down the toilet (ignoring the kids who succeed in public schools), or too dumb to take a guess (the throw-away response in this multiple-choice test). Teachers' unions often employ this extreme "either/or" strategy to promote their interests. Under the present public-schools-only monopoly, unions have just one employer - government - with whom to bargain for teacher pay increases, retirement benefits, health care, insurance coverage, working conditions, and other employment perks. Unions work diligently to benefit their members' lives - but kids are not their members.
