Alternative Energy: Dissection Choice Gaining Ground in Several States July 14, 2005
In January, when Walter Simpson learned that his son Jay's Amherst, New York high school biology class would soon be dissecting frogs, he asked Jay's teacher to provide an alternative assignment. Jay, he explained, had always been a vegetarian and loved animals. "I did not want him to have to compromise his beliefs by participating in biology lab dissection," Simpson said. "If he would never deliberately kill an animal, why should he participate in an activity with a dead animal that was killed on his behalf?" New York's student choice law ensures that students who object to dissection or other classroom exercises harmful to animals must be given another assignment. But when Jay received his alternative assignment, he and his parents were dismayed by its requirements. Take Action:

"A Room of One’s Own" Argues in Favor of Alternative Education
Heather Moore According to the Children’s Defense Fund, in 1989 an average of 1,375 children dropped out of school every day. As a future educator, my reaction to this figure is one of horror and disbelief. Once I get past the shock of such a figure and the obligatory rhetorical questions: How could we let this happen?, I become an investigator. I begin to look for patterns in the profiles of students who have failed. I consider the curriculum these students ingest and how it is fed to them. I try to understand what circumstances result in the forsaking of 1,375 students per day. As a nation, we have established institutions of learning that cater to the needs of some. Our schools allow a select handful of students to succeed. Certain segments of our population appear to be at greater risk than others. The future does not bode well for young black and Latino men and women who do not make it through high school. According to Duane Campbell, author of Choosing Democracy , the unemployment rate for Latino men and women is substantially higher than the national average and an African American child is as likely to go to prison as to college (15). According to the Economic Policy Institute, in 1991 43% of African American children and 35% of Latino children were living in poverty. It is not surprising that a vast number of the 501,875 annual school drop-outs come from impoverished black and Latino families.

Subject: Re: Blacksburg New School - the early years
Well, I have managed to steal a little bit of time tonight and started out by surfing the Web to see what of BNS was out there. I quickly found your website and paged through it. Frankly, I'm amazed at how much of what's there would be just what I imagined from the early years. A feat which must be considered remarkable given the that the school was founded and maintained by parents of its students not the teachers. I wonder how many other alternative schools can say that. But analyzing the school's evolution is not what you asked me about so on to a little bit of history. What follows is a very personal view which should not be taken for, or confused with, the truth. And if you're really looking for something for a fundraiser, I still recommend getting Ann to tell the story.

Alternative Schools and the Students They Serve: Perceptions of State Directors of Special Education
Recent data collected from a national survey estimates that about 12% of all students in alternative schools are students with disabilities. Yet we know very little about the nature of the instructional programs offered, special education processes and procedures in place, accountability practices, and outcomes for these students. In addition, we do not have complete descriptive information on the kinds of alternative schools and programs currently in operation. This Policy Research Brief reports findings from interviews conducted with 49 state directors of special education (or their designees). It describes their perceptions of (a) basic characteristics of alternative schools, (b) major issues for alternative schools, (c) major issues for state education agencies, (d) major issues for students with disabilities, and (e) educational reforms impacting alternative schools. The brief concludes with a discussion of trends that require further study. This issue was co-authored by Camilla A. Lehr, Ph.D., and Cheryl M. Lange, Ph.D., Alternative Schools Research Project, Institute on Community Integration (UCEDD), University of Minnesota. Eric Lanners, Project Assistant, assisted with development of the brief. Alternative Instruction and
Alternative, Performance-Based Assessment
An Annotated Bibliography
by Jane Ehrenfeld
Learning and Mathematics Math Education: Assessment
In a recent discussion in the Learning and Mathematics Discussion Series on the Math Forum, I noticed a flurry of interest in alternative instruction. There is a fair amount of information on the Forum concerning alternative instruction but an annotated list of resources was lacking, so I chose to gather a bibliography on alternative instruction and performance-based assessment. Portfolio assessment, a significant issue in alternative instruction, is not included; however, I felt that this bibliography would be more accessible to teachers if it presented ways in which assessment could be altered without drastic restructuring of class and curriculum. Some of the articles and books referenced have links to portfolio-based instruction and assessment, and can therefore provide resources for teachers interested in pursuing portfolio systems in their classrooms. All of the articles are math-related, and many give concrete lesson plans and suggestions for practice. The list is in two parts, one for alternative instruction and one for performance-based assessment. Critical sources are the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics's Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (section 1, number 9), which forms the basis for much of the work in alternative instruction and assessment being currently undertaken, and Ruth Mitchell's Testing for Learning (section 2, number 6), which provides an excellent argument for changing assessment practices in American education.
