Virgin Islands Humanities Council Publications Program Based on the belief that an understanding of human history, thought and culture begins with a knowledge of one’s own history and culture, the Virgin Islands Humanities Council has established a publications program that makes available source materials central to an understanding of Virgin Islands history and cultural heritage. Volumes published to date chronicle the history and cultural evolution of the islands, formerly known as the Danish West Indies. Beginning with a transcription of eyewitness accounts of the encounter of the Island Carib inhabitants of St Croix with the Colombian fleet in 1493, many of the publications focus on the Danish colonial period. Translations of historical works and current scholarship aim to broaden understanding of the institution of slavery with an emphasis on the lives and cultural adaptations of the enslaved and freed Africans.

Caribbean and American, that is a description of culture in the United States Virgin Islands.
The population in the USVI is largely made up of Caribbean people whose ancestors were Africans and Europeans. You will find people from all across the Caribbean living in the Virgin Islands as well as Americans from the mainland, Europeans and Hispanics.
English is the main language in the USVI and the majority of the population speak, write and read English only. Some residents speak quickly and with an accent making it difficult to understand. Emigrants from other islands have brought other languages to the Virgin Islands therefore it is not uncommon to hear Spanish, French-Patois and Creole.
Music in the Virgin Islands is definitely Caribbean. You can hear reggae, steel pan, calypso and soca. Many other music venues can be enjoyed from Latin and blues to jazz and classical.

Which Island for You? A Sampling of Island Culture
The Caribbean population is a rich gumbo of nationalities, including Americans and Canadians who have retired to and invested in the islands. Little remains of the indigenous populations (there are Carib communities on Dominica and St. Vincent, as well as tantalizing, if sparse, archaeological remains), and many other groups have left their cultural imprint on the Caribbean. Nowhere is African culture more noticeable than in island music. Calypso was born in Trinidad, and its catchy rhythms veil the barbed working-class satire of many of the lyrics. The island is also the stomping ground of a flat-out, freewheeling Carnival that rivals the pre-Lenten celebrations in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans.

US Virgin Islands Culture The US Virgin Islands have a hybrid heritage. There's no trace of the original Indian population; the islands' inhabitants are mostly descended from slaves or from slave owners. The European legacy comes predominantly from the Danes, who owned the islands for over 250 years, plus traces from English and Dutch plantation owners. A French presence stems from the French Huguenots, who came to escape Catholic France in the mid-19th century or arrived when the French owned St Croix. The former have contributed to a community of people referred to as Frenchies who live, predictably, in Frenchtown, just west of Charlotte Amalie. Recent arrivals include a number of American and European expats and a handful of immigrants from nearby Puerto Rico. Today the dominant culture overlaying all these is distinctly American, the result of 80 years of US strategic and commercial interest in the islands. English is the main language on all the islands but it has Creole influences, which means you can say 'mon' with impunity. Puerto Rican emigrants speak Spanish, while some of the Frenchies still speak French. A lot of islanders of African descent retain a strong belief in the spirit world: ghosts (

September 26, 2005 Select a City Aruba Bahamas Barbados Cayman Islands Dominican Republic Jamaica Puerto Rico St. Lucia St. Martin/Maarten U.S. Virgin Islands Overview The images you'd expect from a tropical island are here: stretches of beach arc into the distance, and white sails skim across water so blue and clear it stuns the senses. Red-roofed houses color the green hillsides as do the orange of the flamboyant tree, the red of the hibiscus, the magenta of the bougainvillea, and the blue stone ruins of old sugar mills. Sailing into the Caribbean on his second voyage in 1493, Christopher Columbus came upon St. Croix before the group of islands that would later be known as St. Thomas, St. John, and the British Virgin Islands (BVI). He named St. Croix "Santa Cruz," but moved on quickly after he encountered the fierce residents. As he approached St. Thomas and St. John he was impressed enough with the shapely silhouettes of the numerous islands and cays (including the BVI) to name them after Ursula and her 11,000 virgins, but he found the islands barren and moved on to explore Puerto Rico. Over the next century, as it became clear that Spain couldn't defend the entire Caribbean, other European powers began to settle the islands. In the 1600s the French were joined by the Dutch and the English on St. Croix, and St. Thomas had a mixture of European residents in the early 1700s. By 1695 St. Croix was under the control of the French, but the colonists had moved on to what is today Haiti. The island lay virtually dormant until 1733, when the Danish government bought it along with St. Thomas and St. John from the Danish West India Company. At that time settlers from St. Thomas and St. John moved to St. Croix to cultivate the island's gentler terrain. St. Croix developed a plantation economy, but St. Thomas's soil was ill suited to agriculture. There the harbor became internationally known because of its size and ease of entry; it's still hailed as one of the most beautiful seaports in the world.

Her recorded history begins with the discovery of the island by Christopher Columbus in 1493, although he never set foot for fear the island was inhabitited by savage Carib Indians. We know there were not savage indians, only the peaceful Taino indian nation. The Tainos lived of the lush land and the plentiful fish that lived in the surronding waters.
