Virgin Islands Culture
Caribbean and American, that is a description of culture in the United States Virgin Islands. The population in the USVI is largely made up of Caribbean people whose ancestors were Africans and Europeans. You will find people from all across the Caribbean living in the Virgin Islands as well as Americans from the mainland, Europeans and Hispanics.
English is the main language in the USVI and the majority of the population speak, write and read English only. Some residents speak quickly and with an accent making it difficult to understand. Emigrants from other islands have brought other languages to the Virgin Islands therefore it is not uncommon to hear Spanish, French-Patois and Creole.
Music in the Virgin Islands is definitely Caribbean. You can hear reggae, steel pan, calypso and soca. Many other music venues can be enjoyed from Latin and blues to jazz and classical.

http://www.usvitourism.vi/en/home/vi_dining_nightlife.html
The U.S. Virgin Islands culture expresses itself in its unique cuisine, which has its origins in Africa, Puerto Rico, other West Indian islands, and Europe. Since many island recipes originate from times when imports were scarce, today's typical island fare includes locally grown and raised spices, tropical fruits, root vegetables, and meats.
One favorite local beverage is maubi, a slightly fermented drink concocted from ginger root, yeast, herbs, and the bark of the maubi tree. Non-alcoholic ginger beer, bush tea, soursop juice, and the creamy sea-moss cooler are also popular. Although restaurants in the U.S. Virgin Islands feature international cuisine such as French, Japanese, Italian, and Chinese, we encourage you to try island specialties such as conch fritters, fried plantains, sweet potato pudding, and curried chicken. Other Virgin Island specialties include:
Kallaloo a simmering stew of okra, meat, seafood, local greens, and spices Souse a lime-flavored stock of pig's head, tail, and feet Fungi a cornmeal and okra side dish that accompanies fried or boiled fish Johnnycakes a deep-fried delicacy of unleavened bread Lobster, wahoo, grouper, mahi-mahi, tuna, and other daily catches are staple menu items as well. If you have room for dessert, you might try a coconut or guava tart, locally made soursop ice cream, or rich rum cake and bread pudding.

The people here are one of The BVI's best kept secrets; they are a church-going, community-spirited group who believe in helping one another and welcoming visitors to their islands. They are proud and resourceful and have made the transition from a largely rural economy of farming and fishing just a few short decades ago to one of tourism and international finance easily. The people of The British Virgin Islands have their roots in Africa, but their culture is firmly Caribbean. The families of many BVIslanders have been here for generations. The islands were annexed by the British in 1672. Two hundred years later, they were incorporated into the British colony of the Leeward Islands. The governor of the Leewards continued to run the Virgin Islands until 1960, at which point direct responsibility was assumed by an administrator (later restyled governor) appointed from London. The 1967 constitution (see Government ) gave the islands internal self-government.
Government
Under the 1977 constitution, the British monarch appoints a governor to take responsibility for defense, foreign affairs and internal security. The governor also chairs the executive council, which has five other members. The Legislative Council has 13 directly elected members, one ex-officio member and a speaker.

The islands were first inhabited by Carib and Arawak Indians but, in common with the rest of the Caribbean, they endured various waves of European invasion and settlement from the 1490s onwards, finally becoming part of the Danish West Indies. The US government purchased the Islands in 1917 and they are now an unincorporated territory of the USA. A measure of self-government was introduced in 1954, along with the introduction of an elected senate.

Economy

When Denmark sold the islands to the US government in 1917, they insisted that the existing privileges of the inhabitants be respected. A result of this is that the Virgin Islands are not part of the Federal Customs Area, a state of affairs that affords various advantages. This, in turn, has allowed the islands to support a high standard of living that they are naturally reluctant to relinquish.
