Book reviews, and books by Guests on Radio Live How To Celebrate Father's Day by Phyllis Schlafly June 15, 2005 Printer Friendly version E-mail to a Friend On this Father's Day, Americans should ponder the appalling fact that an estimated 40 percent of our nation's children are living in homes without their own father. Most of our social problems are caused by kids who grow up in homes without their own fathers: drug abuse, illicit sexual activity, unwed pregnancies, youth suicide, high school dropouts, runaways, and crime. Where have all the fathers gone? Some men are irresponsible slobs, but no evidence exists that nearly half of American children were voluntarily abandoned by their own fathers; there must be other explanations. For 30 years, feminist organizations and writers have propagated the myth that women are victims of an oppressive patriarchal society and that marriage is an inherently abusive institution that makes wives second-class citizens. Feminists made divorce a major component of women's liberation and their political freedom.

Men Who Are Abused - More Common Than You Think

For longer than I can remember, Men have always held the title of the 'Abuser'. That was until I became a victim of Domestic Violence myself. In all of the years that that I can remember seeing ads on TV for Domestic Violence, NEVER ONCE have I seen an Ad from a Woman claiming to be the abuser. Also, Since I have become aware of the phrase 'Domestic Violence', I have NEVER SEEN a Shelter specifically for men. Why do you think that is? Think about it. In an effort to help to tip the scales of justice back toward the middle of the road (which is where it should be if we are going to be adults and attempt to raise children, run businesses ....). Too often it is the Man that is depicted as the initiator in Domestic Violence. Too often the woman initiates it, and gets away with it. These pages are not intended to tell my story but to give to you the reader the information you may be looking for on Domestic Violence. Most of this page was developed from postings from the Family Guardian Journal's Internet Mailing List. ALL of it can be considered credible.

The censored side of domestic violence
Published: Friday, April 15, 2005 To the Editor:
Even though April is sexual violence awareness month, much awareness-raising will be directed toward the issue of domestic violence in all its forms, especially this year when Clothesline Project, which addresses all issues of violence against women, and the Take Back The Night march are held in April.
Unfortunately, there is a side of domestic violence (DV), which is censored by our society: violence against men. Government estimates on the proportion of men among DV victims vary, but Violence Against Women Survey 2000 in the government documents, which states that 38 percent of victims of domestic violence or are men. I suspect many men at UNH have experience of family violence as children or are regularly slapped by their partners. Given the amount of male-bashing in our media where men are compared to pigs and dogs, it is not surprising that some women see men as deserving of that treatment. Even the MUB bookstore has a book on breakups, which teaches women how to hurt their ex-boyfriends!

No Safe Place: Violence Against Women Domestic Violence
Discussion Questions: Introduction
Women may be afraid of strangers, but it's a husband, a lover, a boyfriend, or someone they know who is most likely to hurt them. According to a U.S. Justice Department study, two-thirds of violent attacks against women are committed by someone the woman knows. In the United States, the most dangerous place for a woman is in her own home, where anger may explode into violence. Approximately 1,500 women are killed each year by husbands or boyfriends. About 2 million men per year beat their partners, according to the F.B.I. There is no excuse for abuse. Is there a profile of men who batter their partners?
Most experts say there is no one profile of men who batter or beat women. Domestic violence crosses all social and economic boundaries. According to Dr. Susan Hanks

Domestic Violence: Saying Sorry Doesn't Make it Right
"The violence began within the first week of our marriage, where he pressed his hands against my mouth and nose attempting to smother me. After this incident, my ex husband would become violent almost nightly often for no apparent reason. One of his favorite assaults was to strangle me with my back against the wall, my feet dangling a foot or so above the floor . He would get right into my face and scream, 'What makes you think I won't kill you and then kill myself?' He would keep me up all night, often lecturing me endlessly and if I got sleepy he would attack me , often times choking me. I was in a constant state of exhaustion, sleeping an average of two hours a night. His violence was controlled and directed at certain parts of my body so that the injuries were not visible to co-workers and friends. Before getting married we dated for three years, with no instances of violence So writes Karen, a domestic violence survivor from California. Think this is rare?

Bartholomew/Liaison Indian prostitutes. Many women and girls are lured into prostitution by traffickers who target the poor and vulnerable. Millions of women require medical attention or otherwise suffer the impact of gender-based violence; fear of violence inhibits discussion and constrains the health choices and life opportunities of many millions more. Psychological abuse almost always accompanies physical abuse. In addition, one third to one half of all cases involve sexual abuse. A high proportion of women who are beaten are subjected to violence repeatedly. Violence against women is a pervasive yet under-recognized human rights violation. Accordingly, the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights, Vienna, and the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing, gave priority to this problem. Violence against women and girls takes many forms:
  • At least 60 million girls who would otherwise be expected to be alive are "missing" from various populations, mostly in Asia, as a result of sex-selective abortions, infanticide or neglect;

Of those victimized by an intimate partner, 85% are women and 15% are men.2 In other words, women are 5 to 8 times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate partner.

¡@¡"@Domestic Violence" is no longer an unfamiliar term in our daily life. ¡@¡@Some of us may have witnessed, heard about, or experienced domestic violence, and some of us may play the role as a defender, silent witness, victim, or perpetrator in the incidents caused by domestic violence. The truth is, most of us still regard domestic violence as a " family's business " that outsiders have no right to get involved. Further, the general public tend to take that only abnormal men will abuse their wives, children, and the elders, which has nothing to do with most normal people's life. Such views on the distinction between private and public life prevent "domestic violence" from becoming a public issue. ¡@¡@Ms. Ru-Weng Deng's murder her husband has exposed the darkside of treating domestic violence as a "family's business" to the public. It furthers women's organizations to take part in actions against marital and domestic violence. Today we are glad that the " Domestic Violence Prevention Act " was read for the first time.

Stop the Cycle of Violence!
All of you know how much needs to be done to take meaningful steps to end domestic violence and sexual assault. We need tough law enforcement, aggressive prosecutions, effective prevention programs and available shelters for families in distress. Most importantly, we need to insure that more people know and understand that domestic violence is not a private matter. It is a critical national problem that affects us all in every community, in every work place and in every school.
Each of us can do more and this handbook shows us how.
President Clinton recognized the seriousness of the problem when he signed the Violence Against Women Act as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. In the past year, the Department of Justice has sought to combine tough federal penalties along with substantial resources to the states to begin dealing with the problem of domestic violence in a comprehensive, multi-faceted way. States and local law enforcement agencies have been encouraged to begin programs that will enhance their ability to prevent domestic violence, to punish it and to stop the cycle of violence. The Act also established a:

The Men's Rights Movement, Part 2MRAs deny that violence against women is an issue
Posted by Amanda Marcotte at 07:44 AM Read Pt. 1 here One of the most important goals of the men's rights/anti-feminist movement is to convince people that violence against women is not a problem and hopefully even repeal legislation that's designed to protect women from male violence and sexual assault. As one can imagine, they reject the tactic of openly advocating for violence against women as an acceptable means of social controlafter all, the strategy in play is to restore male dominance by claiming that it doesn't exist. Instead, they just deny that violence is a problem and claim that feminists are hysterical or malicious, depending on the circumstances. Argument: Women commit domestic violence just as often, if not more than men. Examples here and here. This belief is one of the tenets of anti-feminism, and it's critical for MRAs to believe this, because the alternative is to accept that men and women are not equalfor if we were, why is it so easy for so many women to be kept under control by violence? Unfortunately, the numbers that the MRAs cling to in hopes it proves that there is no epidemic of male violence against women pretty much all come from one study. And, as Ampersand of Alas, a Blog demonstrates here

The focus was on violence and kids, including the impact on kids, of seeing domestic violence in the home. I visited their Web site because I was told they had information about male batterers and male victims of battering. The visit prompted the editorial below. Note: After this article was first published on MenWeb, the Family Health Institute (FHI) has significantly modified the information on their Web site. They have also posted a set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about their Project MAVRIC, which address some of the concerns I have raised about that project. I have modified this article in light of those developments, and in light of correspondence with Ari Cowan, Executive Director of FHI. FHI is one of the few sites that focus on men as the victims of violence, including domestic violence, as well as men as perpetrators of violence. I wish to acknowledge FHI for their responsiveness to some of the concerns I originally raised, even if the site continues to misrepresent some studies.

Throughout this section you will find evidence of gross violations of the civil liberties of men and women in the name of controlling domestic violence. Present efforts, massively funded, brand all men as "batterers" and all women as "victims." Any thinking individual knows instinctively that violence in the family is a human problem, not a gender issue. And in most cases it takes two to tangle. Further, in Lifeline you will find that current laws act to deter citizens from seeking the help they need. Abstract
Top People hit and abuse family members because they can. "Primary aggressor" laws usually result in arrest of the male and ignore research showing 50% of domestic assaults are mutual combat. The woman is thus encouraged to abuse her partner further until finally he will take no more. Such provocation of the human male is dangerous. There is no support in the present data for the hypothesis that women use violence only in self defense. Three common reasons women give for male abuse are: to resolve the argument; to respond to family crisis; and to " stop him bothering me." Male abuse of a woman, requiring self defense, is one of the less-frequently stated reasons by women for their assaults. Our research shows that a gender-balanced approach to domestic violence is essential in order to reduce both the frequency and severity of such incidents for both men and women. Present laws and practices appear to commonly have the opposite effect.

This is not to say that domestic violence is a Muslim problem. A woman is beaten up every 9 Muslim men are beating their wives next door to you and me.
http://www.themodernreligion.com/women/w_dv.htm
Domestic Violence exists in all quarters of society. This section was created to specifically address domestic violence within Muslim communities. This is not to say that domestic violence is a Muslim problem. A woman is beaten up every 9 seconds in America. See Domestic Violence in the West There are two categories of guilty people:
1. The ones who inflict the physical and mental abuse. In most cases, the father and husband.
2. The ones who try to hide the fact that people belonging to category 1, do exist. These people are men and sadly, women too. It is naive at best and irresponsible at worst, to claim that domestic violence does not exist in our communities. Denying it does not make it go away. When this section first went online, several people complained: "I was a bit mad at that time when Isaw the site that you had. The site could make people believe that Muslims are violent as the western media has deliberately done this against Muslims." (from someone who used the nickname servant of God) Firstly
