They were supported by squires, who fought only in an emergency, and professional calvary sergeants who were not members of the aristocracy. A code of behavior grew up, embodying all the characteristics of the ideal knight. He should be bold and brave, yet gentle, considerate, wise, and courteous. He should be a ruthless killer, but also fond of music, poetry and polite society. He should be inspired by the love of a beautiful woman, whom he worshiped from afar. He should be a good Christian, and follow the teachings of the Church. His manners should be perfect, his speech smooth and entertaining, his appearance manly, strong, energetic and elegant. Understandably, this ideal did not really exist. But he is a familiar figure in many medieval songs and stories, and tells us a lot about the qualities that people valued at the time. Chivalry, as this code of behavior is called, applied to the upper class only. Ordinary, rough soldiers were simply expected to shoot straight and obey orders.

SEMINAR VI: The Impact of the Vikings on the Frankish World(Lent, Week 2)
In this seminar we attempt to assess the impact that the Viking raids and incursions into Frankia had upon the development of the Frankish kingdoms in the ninth century. Roughly speaking this question could be said to break down into several parts:
  • What impact did the Vikings have upon the development of Frankish society? (Here, it is useful to consider the components elements of the population: thus, what impact did the Viking raids have upon Frankia's lords, peasants, monasteries and churches? Did anyone prosper as a result of the raids? Who lost out?) What impact did the Vikings have upon the development of the Frankish economy? What impact did the raids have upon the development of the Frankish state? Be warned: historians - not least the great pioneering social historian Marc Bloch - used to think that the Viking raids were one of, if not the, chief cause of the decline of royal authority in western Frankia that is evident from around 890, but more recent historians are not so impressed by this argument.
  • In order to answer these questions we must first attempt to answer a whole series of preliminary questions to do with the nature of the Viking threat to the survival and prosperity of the Frankish kingdoms:
  • What were the aims of the Viking warbands and their leaders?

    7.3.3 prehistoric and medieval time
    Stone Age
The first found traces after the Ice Age are from northern Scania 13'000 years ago. From 8'000 years ago great settles are found along the coastal line of that time. 6'000 years ago agriculture was established. After a change of climate 5'000 years ago most of the farmlands were abandoned for colonization of the coasts and Baltic islands (for instance Åland), followed again by spread of settlements in the Scandinavian inland 4'000 years ago.
    Bronze Age
About 4'000 years ago the contacts between South-Scandinavia and the European continent increased, and approximately at the same time the central and northern parts of Scandinavia came in closer contact with Russia and Siberia. Cattle and stock-raising became important in the South, and in the North a complement to hunting, fishing and gathering.

F rom Stephen Morillo, May 2002: With the advent of summer and the arrival of my summer intern Ben Scanlon, the pace of progress has picked up on the backlog of HSJ volumes, while regular work in course continues on current numbers. Here's a quick rundown of the state of the Journal. Note: Because of the problems out-of-order numbering would cause for Boydell, we have agreed that volumes will be numbered consecutively, but that each will bear the date of its original membership year. Thus, the current schedule looks like this: Old # New # For Year Appears Nov 2001 Nov 2002 June 2002 May 2003 Sept 2002 Oct 2003 Oct 2002 Nov 2003 Feb 2003 May 2004

Only 9 credit units may be taken for credit at the introductory (100) level.
    INTRODUCTORY COURSES (100 LEVEL)
The department offers 100-level survey courses dealing with major historical periods and developments. In addition to the study of basic information, students examine conflicting interpretations and historiographical debates on controversial issues, and the diverse scholarly methods used by historians in their study and interpretation of the past. Six credit units earned in any of these courses fulfil the prerequisite for the study of history in any 200-level course.
Instruction normally consists of three hours of lectures a week, and one hour of tutorial instruction in which documents are examined, historical and historiographical issues are discussed, and advice is given on the preparation of essays. Tutorials are designed to help students sharpen their analytical skills and improve their oral expression. The preparation of essays is designed to help students define and demonstrate an understanding of important themes, to develop their research skills, and to improve their command of written English.

    77. NOVA Online | The Vikings | Explore A Viking Village
NOVA Online's video tour of a lifelike scale model of Birka, a medieval Viking village that archaeologists excavated near modern-day Stockholm.

    Explore a Viking Village
Want to "walk" through a real Viking village? The sequences below from the NOVA film "The Vikings" offer a fascinating and unprecedented look at Birka, a medieval Viking village that archeologists recently excavated near modern-day Stockholm. The video clips come from footage that Swedish filmmakers Mikael Agaton and Lars Rengfelt shot of a 1:30 scale model of Birka now housed in the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm. See the various clips to learn more about the model and how it was made and filmed.
You'll need one of the (free) software plugins - QuickTime or RealPlayer - to be able to view the clips. If you already have the software, choose a media format to view a clip. Note: all of the clips are silent.
    Construction
    QuickTime RealVideo
Swedish Television had its own model builders construct the mini village. Working from the archeologists' maps and sketches, the designers built the model in sections so it could be moved into a film studio. All told, the model took six to eight months to complete.
    Archeology
    QuickTime RealVideo
The model builders relied on the results of a five-year archeological investigation of Birka that ended in 1995. The fieldwork provided a much clearer idea of the layout of buildings and streets than had been known before, a layout that the model faithfully recreates.
