vietnamese also make copper reproductions of the crane. In Oriental mythology, the phoenix is considered the paragon of virtue and grace.

The traditional Coat of Arms consisted of a shield or banner or varied forms, having the stylistic representation of a dragon , a legendary and totemic animal of multiple symbolic significance. Also included on the Coat of Arms were the unicorn, tortoise and phoenix. Together, they make up the quartet of the traditional motifs and emblems of Viet Nam.
The Dragon. The Dragon ("Long") is a fabulous beast which the Vietnamese mythology represents with the head of a camel, horns of a deer, eyes of a fish, ears of a buffalo, body and neck of a snake, scales of a carp, claws of an eagle, and feet of a tiger. A long barb hangs on each side of its mouth, and a precious stone shines brilliantly on its tongue. The summit of its head is decorated with a protuberance which is a sign of great intelligence. Finally, it has a crest of 81 scales running the entire length of its backbone. A dragon is said to breathe a kind of smoke which can be transformed at will into fire or water. It lives with equal ease in the sky, in the water, or underground. It is immortal and does not reproduce, because the number of dragons always increases with the metamorphosis of the ."Giao Long", which are fabulous reptiles half lizard and half snake that automatically become dragons after ten centuries of existence.
Despite its awesome appearance, the dragon does not incarnate the spirit of evil, and the Vietnamese have always considered the dragon as a symbol of power and nobility. That is why the dragon was chosen as the special symbol of the emperors. The emperor was considered to be the son of Heaven. The dragon having five claws was found on the official dress of the emperor, and the dragon having four claws decorated the official dress of high dignitaries of the Royal Court.

An overview of the history of Vietnam from 1945 to 1975. 845 words ( approx. 3.4 pages ), 3 sources, MLA, Click here to show/hide Paper Summary
Abstract
This paper examines how the unification of Vietnam was a long and complicated process that involved many entities and individuals. It discusses the primary unification efforts, beginning in the 1940s through the early years of the 1970s. It looks at how these efforts involved three separate political entities: the communist-led nationalist movement known as the Viet Minh (the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, DRV), led by Ho Chi Minh and based in Hanoi in North Vietnam; the Saigon-based Republic of Vietnam (RVN), a collaborative effort between chief-of-state Bao Dai and Ngo Dinh Diem; and the Geneva Agreement of July 21st, 1954, that divided Vietnam into two cease-fire zones in the north and south, separated by the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) at the 17th parallel.
From the Paper:
"In August of 1945, at the end of World War II, the nationalist movement of the Viet Minh seized power in Hanoi, Hue and Saigon, for the Viet Minh had developed a military force and popular base during the Japanese occupation of Vietnam, and it quickly moved to secure political authority before the imminent arrival of the Allied powers. Emperor Bao Dai, the Japanese puppet, abdicated in late August, and on September 2nd, 1945, Viet Minh leader Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam's independence as the democratic Republic of Vietnam. As Phillip B. Davidson points out, Ho Chi Minh "quoted from the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the French Declaration of the Rights of Man, first issued in the mid 18th century, in order to give some legitimacy to the claims of the DRV that would bring Vietnam into the fold as an independent Asian entity" (156)."

An examination of the battle and its significance to American politics and military tactics 3,475 words ( approx. 13.9 pages ), 10 sources, Click here to show/hide Paper Summary
Abstract
The author of this paper discusses the significance of the battle at Dien Bien Phu as the place where the first Vietnamese revolutionaries found their power and became a force to be reckoned with and argues that had the United States learned from this battle and adopted the successful tactics in this terrain and situation, it might have had a better chance of winning its own conflict in Vietnam.
From the Paper:
"The end of World War II brought vast political changes throughout Asia. In previously colonial areas, nationalists used the opportunity present in the Japanese surrender and the temporary weakness of European powers to demand self-determination. The August Revolution brought the Vietminh to power in Vietnam, and the clash between French and Vietminh was inevitable, as neither side was willing to concede sovereignty to the other. A few months after the close of World War II, France sought to re-establish its discredited and unpopular colonial rule in Indochina. Encouraged by words of support from President Truman, the French committed almost a million military men to their effort."

The Question
(Submitted May 11, 1997) What is the tale of the two lovers that were kept from each other by the Milky Way? They were stars
The Answer
The story of two lovers kept apart by the Milky Way is told in a number of Asian countries. It originates in China, but I'm also aware of versions in Japan and Vietnam. The stars are Vega (in the constellation Lyra) and Altair (in the constellation Aquila). I'm most familiar with the Vietnamese story, which is entitled "The Weaver Fairy and the Buffalo Boy". You can find it in a book entitled "Sky Legends of Vietnam" by Lynette Dyer Voung. Here is a brief summary of the story: The story explains the apparent coming together of these two stars during the summer months. It also explains (from some things I didn't include in the summary) the disappearance of crows in the summer, the summer rains, and the appearance of rainbows. I hope you'll look up the full story in Lynette Dyer Vuong's book, or in other collections of Chinese or Japanese star stories. Jim Lochner

When we first arrived in Ha Long Bay in 1994, we knew we had discovered one of the world's ultimate paddling destinations. Since then we have returned regularly to Vietnam to lead kayaking trips in this myriad of fantastically shaped islets.
In Ha Long Bay we live aboard a mothership, a beautiful, traditional sailing vessel, complete with a friendly crew and a marvelous chef. From this base we spend eight days paddling the bay, winding through its labyrinth of limestone islets, and finding secret passages to hidden lagoons and magical sea caves. We stop for breaks on white sand beaches and swim in warm, jade waters.
We visit the floating villages of fisherfolk who live their whole lives aboard tiny bamboo boats, and we witness their animistic ceremonies, in which they lyrically worship dragons and other deities of the bay. During this trip we enjoy the best paddling in the world, gain an insight to Vietnamese culture, tradition and mythology and, as a bonus, enjoy the finest cuisine Vietnam has to offer!

Memorial Project Nha Trang, Vietnam: Towards the Complex - For the Courageous, the Curious, and the Cowards (2001) records a staged underwater race that suggests the arduous progress of a nation recovering from a half-century of political turmoil. In slow motion, a group of pearl divers soundlessly pull cyclos (rickshaw taxis) along the floor of the sea. With direct reference to the impact of the Vietnam War on his country, Nguyen-Hatsushiba deconstructs the fate of those who are caught between old and new modes of existence. Pearl divers and cyclo drivers remain two of the most economically disenfranchised workers in Vietnam.
Both works are filmed underwater, suggesting a symbolic link with Vietnamese sensibility. Vietnam, with its long coastline and one of the world's largest, most fertile river basins, is defined by its relationship to water. Vietnamese folklore and mythology also abound in references to water.
Nguyen-Hatsushiba earned his B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992 and his M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1994. His work has been featured in the 2001 Yokohama Triennale and the 2002 Sydney and Sao Paolo Biennials. His work will be featured at the upcoming 2003 Venice and Istanbul Biennales.

    Conflicts Among Equals
Conflict is an essential social and psychological component. Jean-Pierre Vernant, Myth and Society in Ancient Greece I've been spending months in research on the Athenian polis and the nature of citizens in that first democracy and I have discovered some interesting ideas that may be relevant to a discussion on conflict and war The Athenian democracy was an extremely polarized society, increasingly so after the Peloponnesian Wars. To start, citizenship in Athens was originally limited to men who were natives of the demes or parishes of Attica. This, argues

The body of the book is full of information about Vietnamese culture, food and dress. Vietnamese words are sprinkled throughout the text. They are highlighted and listed in a glossary with pronunciation guides. A small subplot of attraction between Cammy and a boy from the community seems somewhat out of place, but does not detract from the overall story. Otherwise this is a compact slice of Vietnamese culture that is easily accessible to the young reader.
