    Author Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen

    Abstract
    1.0 Introduction Problem
In learning a foreign language, vocabulary plays an important role. It is one element that links the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing all together. In order to communicate well in a foreign language, students should acquire an adequate number of words and should know how to use them accurately.
Even though students realize the importance of vocabulary when learning language, most Vietnamese students learn vocabulary passively due to several factors. First, they consider the teacher's explanation for meaning or definition, pronunciation, spelling and grammatical functions boring. In this case scenario, language learners have nothing to do in a vocabulary learning section but to listen to their teacher. Second, students only think of vocabulary learning as knowing the primary meaning of new words.
Therefore, they ignore all other functions of the words. Third, students usually only acquire new vocabulary through new words in their textbooks or when given by teachers during classroom lessons. For example, learners find many new words in a text and then ask the teacher to explain the meanings and usage's. Forth, many Vietnamese learners do not want to take risks in applying what they have learnt. Students may recognize a word in a written or spoken form and think that they already "know the word", but they may not be able to use that word properly in different contexts or pronounce it correctly.

Romany (or Gypsy), Asian and other nonmainstream students of English are already beginning to see the benefits of multicultural training, thanks to a jointly funded Education Ministry and British Council program known as Integration of Roma Children Through Teaching English.
Taking its place as part of the wider effort to improve multicultural policy everywhere from classrooms to police stations, the program is a complement to efforts such as the Multicultural Education Reform project.
    Getting in touch
Lessons in teaching via drama can benefit classes in many ways. An adult teacher might be shy about performing, but that only puts him or her more in touch with what shy, new or ethnically different students may be feeling.
Between seminars, teachers put into practice the methodology learned and then discuss their successes and failures at the next meeting. Kolovratova has plans to monitor schools in the United Kingdom and hopes to have Czech teachers visit those schools with funding from Socrates, a European Union education program.

We tried to keep it a secret so that our families would be the first to know, but waiting another 12 days to share the exciting news with them face-to-face was so agonizing! It helped to share news of the engagement with our new PVI teacher friends after three days of keeping it to ourselves. I was so touched by how sincerely happy they were for us and amazed at how well this group bonded in a relatively short amount of time. I cannot emphasize enough how personally enriching this trip was to me not only as a result of listening to conversations and multiple perspectives of fellow PVI participants, but also the incredibly special moments learning from some of the most amazing people of Vietnam: Jimmy Pham, inspiring founder of the KOTO program and restaurant, which provides hope for street children and disadvantaged youth; an articulate staff member with Project RENEW, who gave a Power Point presentation that shed light on their efforts to spread mine awareness and to provide assistance to landmine victims; the peaceful and loving Buddhist nun who runs the Duc Son orphanage and the adorable children themselves; and Dr. Hu Ngoc, esteemed cultural historian, who graciously took the time to give us a lecture on the history of Vietnam.

    Introduction
by Lawrence Curry - Department of History 1. Korea and Vietnam - Different Wars, Same Policies This unit is a study of the Korean War and the Vietnamese War. The primary purpose is to help high school students learn how to collect information, analyze it, and draw their own conclusions. They should be able to determine how the Truman Doctrine and the Domino Theory shaped presidential policies and public opinion. Students need to be able to detect an author's bias, especially when reading articles from the Internet. With the declassification of documents of the Soviet Union and China, students will have the opportunity to read the views of our Cold War enemies concerning Korea and Vietnam. It is a learning experience when they find that sometimes there is a difference between the documents of the Soviets and the Chinese concerning the same event. This is an excellent opportunity for students to look at known facts, from both sides, communist and non-communist, and make their own conclusions.
The secondary purpose is for students to learn technological skills that are used in school and business. They will give a media presentation in class based on their research of war leaders or interviews with local citizens who were involved in the wars. Students need to become familiar with PowerPoint Presentations, and how to use audio and video in these presentations.

Subtopic: Tet, the Vietnamese New Year
Grade Level: 3-4 Author: Tracy Ward
    Background
Vietnam is a country in the Eastern Hemisphere that was influenced by China for many years. Therefore, the Chinese New Year and Tet, the Vietnamese New Year have many similarities. Tet is the abbreviation of Tet Nguyen Dan which means the first morning of the first day of the new period. Tet marks the beginning of a new year on the lunar calendar, and the beginning of Spring. Vietnamese are constantly aware of the phases of the moon. All events are planned by the lunar calendar. The New Year begins on the first night of the first moon after the sun enters Aquarius. This is sometime between January 21 and February 19 on the solar calendar. Tet is a huge celebration lasting three days. Families save money, store food, and plan far in advance for Tet, major holiday in Vietnam. The Vietnamese take extreme care to start the New Year out right. They buy new clothes, paint and clean their homes, cook three days worth of food, pay off all debts and make amends to rid themselves of all bad feelings. Cleaning is frowned on during Tet because one would not want to sweep out any good luck. Digging and drawing water is also not allowed so the ground and water can enjoy the holiday. The marketplace is very busy the week before Tet, as people buy food, trinkets, firecrackers, flowers, and other items in anticipation of the holiday. At four o'clock in the afternoon on Tet eve all the markets close down so the people can go home and prepare for midnight when Tet begins. Before 1995 firecrackers would explode scaring off all evil spirits and welcoming the New Year. In 1995, because of the huge waste of money and the injury rate, (71 people killed in 1994), the government banned the use of firecrackers resulting in a very quiet Tet.
