Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, A Lesson Plan for Grades 4 - 6
By Tracy Ward Background: Vietnam is a country in the Eastern Hemisphere that was influenced by China for many years. Therefore, the Chinese New Year and Tet, the Vietnamese New Year have many similarities. Tet is the abbreviation of Tet Nguyen Dan which means the first morning of the first day of the new period. Tet marks the beginning of a new year on the lunar calendar, and the beginning of Spring. Vietnamese are constantly aware of the phases of the moon. All events are planned by the lunar calendar. The New Year begins on the first night of the first moon after the sun enters Aquarius. This is sometime between January 21 and February 19 on the solar calendar. Tet is a huge celebration lasting three days. Families save money, store food, and plan far in advance for Tet, major holiday in Vietnam. The Vietnamese take extreme care to start the New Year out right. They buy new clothes, paint and clean their homes, cook three days worth of food, pay off all debts and make amends to rid themselves of all bad feelings. Cleaning is frowned on during Tet because one would not want to sweep out any good luck. Digging and drawing water is also not allowed so the ground and water can enjoy the holiday. The marketplace is very busy the week before Tet, as people buy food, trinkets, firecrackers, flowers, and other items in anticipation of the holiday. At four o'clock in the afternoon on Tet eve all the markets close down so the people can go home and prepare for midnight when Tet begins. Before 1995 firecrackers would explode scaring off all evil spirits and welcoming the New Year. In 1995, because of the huge waste of money and the injury rate, (71 people killed in 1994), the government banned the use of firecrackers resulting in a very quiet Tet.

Have students practice retelling folktales in their classroom. When students feel confident, teams of three or four students at a time can then take their tales to other classes for a storytelling concert. If older students are sent to the younger grades, ask the younger grades to thank the storytellers with drawings inspired by their stories. 1001 Nights Festival
This is a continuing storytelling session in which a story is begun and then left open-ended at a crucial point. The next day the story is completed and a new one begun and left open-ended at an exciting moment. Stories could be selected from the Tales of the Arabian Nights and told in this fashion, as in the style of Shahrazad, its great storyteller. According to legend, she told stories in this way to a sultan for 1001 nights, which is why the stories of the Arabian Nights is also called "1001 Nights." A Picture is Worth 1000 Words
A class selects a classical painting. Looking at the painting for inspiration, the class constructs the first few sentences of a tale through group discussion and suggestion. The paragraph is then sent on to another class which reads the first paragraph and adds on another. The process is repeated including as many classes as possible until the tale seems finished. All the classes then gather to hear the result of their group effort read out loud and to see the painting, that inspired the story.

    Language for Travelers
Along with architecture, laws and cuisine, the modern Vietnamese language reflects the influence of people who settled, invaded and colonized Vietnam over the past two thousand years. Because of their regional domination for many centuries, the Chinese had a particularly powerful impact on the Vietnamese language, and many words are of Chinese origin. For several centuries, a Chinese alphabet was used by scholars and aristocrats. Modern Vietnamese is a monosyllabic language, meaning that all words are only one syllable long. Like Thai, Vietnamese is tonal, meaning that a rising or falling tone changes the meaning of the word. Since most Western languages use tone to emphasize an underlying meaning, interpretation, or emotion (e.g., angry, doubtful, sarcastic, flamboyant, flirtatious, hesitant, etc.) tonal languages like Vietnamese are particularly difficult for Westerners to learn. Since English is taught in all Vietnamese schools, you will have fewer communications problems than you might expect. Your high school French may also come in handy. Failing that, there’s always charades. You will find most Vietnamese patient, tolerant, and willing to do what they can to communicate with you. If you plan an extended tour (especially outside Saigon or Hanoi) or plan to live in Vietnam, you should strongly consider taking a class or even buying language tapes. We have reviewed and recommend the self-study programs below.

    Preface
The year 1983-1984 will be a time of reassessment of the Vietnam War among Americans. The desire to "rethink" America's involvement in Vietnam has been prompted by the ten-year anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal of combat troops from Vietnam; the completion of the controversial Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and events in Central America that pose some of the same kinds of dilemmas and foreign policy choices as did the situation in Vietnam. The WGBH Educational Foundation has produced a thirteen-part television retrospective, Vietnam: A Television History , to be broadcast by the Public Broadcasting Service starting in October, 1983. The series has also been adopted as a licensed telecourse. Information on the telecourse can be obtained from Films Incorporated, 1213 Wilmette Avenue, Wilmette, IL 60091; (312) 256-4730. The Asia Society's Education and Communications Department (editors and publishers of Focus on Asian Studies ) has taken this opportunity to prepare a teacher's guide on Vietnam for secondary school use. A committee of three university-based scholars and three secondary-level classroom teachers has pooled its considerable resources to write this guide. Robert Geise is Social Studies Chairman, South Side High School, Rockville Centre, NY. Michael J. Glatthaar is a secondary school teacher. A. Tom Grunfeld teaches history at SUNY/Empire State College. Moss Roberts is Associate Professor of Chinese at New York University in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Literatures and directed the East Asian Studies Program there for many years. Mark Willner is Assistant Principal, Chairman (Social Studies Department), Midwood High School, Brooklyn, NY. Marilyn Blatt Young is Professor of History at New York University.

Top of Page BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Vietnam War (referred to by Vietnamese as the American War) began for the United States in 1963 and ended with its military withdrawal in 1973. The war resulted in more than 58,000 dead and 300,000 wounded on the U.S. side, and close to 2 million Vietnamese civilian and military casualties. Over 170,000 Hispanics served and 5.2% of them (over 3,000) died. The film "Soldados: Chicanos in Viet Nam" gives voice to a handful of those Hispanic soldiers. Oral history has been a vital tool in preserving the social and cultural history of communities across the globe. It especially allows for the contribution of voices not included in traditional history texts or government documents. "Soldados: Chicanos in Viet Nam," fits well in that tradition. The experiences of Chicano soldiers (soldados) have been largely absent from the historical record of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. The U.S. government did not even begin keeping separate statistics on Hispanics until 1979.
