Methods: Project Overview
Asian women, in general, and Vietnamese women, in particular, have been identified as ethnic groups that are not participating in breast cancer screening programs in the U.S. The reasons are complex and Vietnamese women may be especially vulnerable due to cultural variances in beliefs, health practices, language barriers, lack of access to care due to socio-economic factors, as well as the long term effects of the migration that occurred at the close of the Vietnam war. A focus group was conducted to provide insight into the beliefs and attitudes that guide Vietnamese women¹s health care seeking behavior. Five group members were recruited through collaboration with the Community House Calls Program at Harborview Medical Center. The women¹s ages ranged from 63 to 93, their length of stay in the U.S. ranged from 8 years to 16 years. Since none of the group members spoke English, a Vietnamese woman who works with the Community House Calls Program acted as interpreter during the focus group session.
Epidemiology
A study by Ziegler, et. al. (1993) determined that Asian-American women born in the West had a breast cancer risk 60% higher than Asian-Americans born in the East. The study also noted that Asian-American women with three or four grandparents born in the West had a risk 50% higher than those with all grandparents born in the East. Also, immigrants who lived in the West for ten years or longer had a risk 80% higher than more recent immigrants. Although studies are lacking as to why the risk increases with longer stays in the U.S., there is strong speculation that this is mainly due to acculturation to diet, environment, and cultural barriers (Ziegler, et. al.,1993).

Methods In addition to demographic and acculturation questions students were asked about their use of substances: alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana, amphetamines, cocaine, and heroin. Use of alcohol and cigarette were scored as dichotomies: current uses or nonuse. Use of illicit substance was scored as dichotomies: never used or ever used. Use of amphetamines, cocaine, and heroin are not reported here because of very small numbers. Data were analyzed using SPSS statistical analysis system. Tests of significance included chi-square for cross tabulations and t-tests for continuous variables. Bivariate associations between the dependent variable and the independent variables were examined to identify subgroups within Vietnamese students who are most likely to use substance. Finally, logistic regression analyses were performed to determine factors associated with each substance.

In a study of 30 Vietnamese women recruited from a civic association that serves Vietnamese women in Boston:

Tran CG. Domestic violence among Vietnamese refugee women: Prevalence, abuse characteristics, psychiatric symptoms, and psychosocial factors [dissertation]. Boston, MA: Boston University; 1997. The Asian Task Force study found that:
  • The average score for all respondents on male privilege was 8.5 out of 24; for Vietnamese respondents it was 12 out of 24 (the highest score amongst the different ethnic groups in the study).  The higher the score, the more an individual believes in male privilege.  The average score of 8.5 is a low score indicating that overall, respondents do not believe that a husband has the right to discipline his wife, can expect to have sex with his wife whenever he wants it, is the ruler of his home, or that some wives deserve beatings.

Asian American Studies
College of Ethnic Studies Undergraduate Programs
The Asian American Studies Department, the largest of four departments in the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University, was established in fall 1969 as a result of the Third World Student Strike. The Department currently consists of five Asian American ethnic units: Chinese American, Filipino American, Japanese American, Korean American, and Vietnamese American. It is a full service academic unit that offers a comprehensive program of study on the Asian American experience with a commitment to serving the University, its students, and the Asian American communities. At present, the Department offers fifty sections of classes taught by a faculty of twenty-plus to approximately two thousand students each semester. Students may take Asian American Studies courses for a baccalaureate major or minor, and to partially fulfill the Liberal Studies major, general education, and University statutory graduation requirements. In 1994, the Asian Pacific American Education Advisory Committee of the Chancellor's Office recognized and acknowledged the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University as an "exemplary" program.

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the achievements of Asian American men and women who've made a difference. Many people think Asian Pacific Americans are one single group, but they are really made up of more than 24 ethnic groups, that speak different languages and have their own rich history. Some of these ethnic groups include the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Hawaiian, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Filipino people. Introduction In recent decades, migration waves have brought to the United States large numbers of Asians and Pacific Islanders (API) Well over two-fifths of all nonamnesty persons admitted in the U.S. in 1991 were API ( Barkan. 1992) The trend of increasing API immigration is clear the API portion in the U S. total immigration steadily grew from the 1972's 28.7 percent to 1985's 44 2 percent (Barkan, 1992) Consequently, API student enrollment has been increasing drastically. In 1979, 217,000 enrolled 8-15 year old APIs were identified as language minorities; by 1989, the number had reached 547,000 (National Center for Education Statistics. 1992) With their drastically different cultural backgrounds, API children's schooling poses a challenge to educators and the society

In a flip remark last June, University of California (UC) Regents Ward Connerly said: "I would be quite comfortable with only white and Asian students at UC, I have no problem with that."
It was Henry Der, Chair of Chinese for Affirmative Action who took Connerly and Pete Wilson to task. In his eloquent address to the UC Regents, August 20th, Der said: "If Asian American students were to attend certain UC campuses that are exclusively Asian and white, such segregated education would not prepare Asian American students to assume leadership positions in a multiracial California society. As a parent, I do not want any of my three children to experience or choose a segregated college education."
Pete Wilson's attempt to foment hostility between Asian American and African American communities has already backfired. Asian American support for affirmative action is growing. Throughout California's communities of color there is an awakened sense that an injury to one is an injury to all.
Filipinos for Affirmative Action, the Asian Law Caucus, the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance; Kimi Lee, Executive Director of tbe University of California Student Association; and Eddie Wong, Western Region Rainbow Coalition Director, are playing an active role in defending affirmative action for America.

Vietnamese American Reaction Divided
By Janet Dang
However, reactions from Vietnamese Americans, many of whom are political refugees, were mixed. Van Thai Tran said that many Vietnamese Americans have close ties with McCain because he is viewed as a heroic war figure, risking his life to fight for South Vietnam. Before the United States became involved in the conflict in Vietnam, the northern and southern regions of the country were embattled in a bitter fight for the country. In 1954, France ended its 100 years of colonial rule after loses to Vietnamese forces, according to Robert Brigham, a professor at Vassar College. That same year, France and Vietnam signed the Geneva Peace Accords, which created the partition of the country at the 17th parallel. By 1957, the U.S.-funded South Vietnamese forces had launched pre-emptive attacks against the communist North Vietnam, driven by fears that the revolutionary state wanted to take the South by force. Two years later, the North Vietnamese Communist Party, led by Ho Chi Minh, approved plans to violently overthrow South Vietnam.
