An Interactive Workshop on Depression among Asian American Women
Data shows that Asian American women between the ages of 15-24 the second highest suicide rate among women across all racial/ethnic groups and that Asian American girls have the highest rates of depressive symptoms of all racial groups. Such alarming statistics could be attributed to barriers to mental health education and services. The "model minority" stereotype presents a false picture of Asian Americans' mental and physical health needs, thereby limiting education, prevention, and treatment efforts for depression in this community... In contemporary American society, increases in minority representation in special education settings are anticipated over the next few decades. Asian/Pacific Islander students represent 3.8 % of the general population (National School Boards Association, 2002). Major subgroups include Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Asian Indians, and Koreans. Between 1980 and 1990, the rate of increase in the population for Asians was 107.8 % while for Euro Americans the percentage increase approximated only 6% (Public Law 105-17, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997 ). Among students receiving special education services in all disability categories, Asian/Pacific Islander students represent approximately 1.7% of the total special education population. Within the special education population, these students comprise 4.6% of students with hearing impairments, 4.7% of students with autism, and 11.3% of students with deaf-blindness.
Such changes in demographics also affect incidence rates for disabilities within the Asian general population. In the total general population the disability rate for Asians and Pacific Islanders (9.9%) (National Council on Disability, 1993) is less than half that of Caucasians (19.7%) (Bradsher, 1995). The sheer expected increase in population growth of this ethnic group will result in a

Heritage Month: May 2004 In 1978, a joint congressional resolution established Asian Pacific American Heritage Week. The first 10 days of May were chosen to coincide with two important anniversaries: the arrival in the United States of the first Japanese immigrants (May 7, 1843) and the completion of the transcontinental railroad (May 10, 1869). In 1992, Congress expanded the 10-day observance to a monthlong celebration.

Cineaste Publishers Inc. 1996. Used in the UCB Media Resources Web site with permission. American popular culture is notoriously male-centered. For Asian Americans, however, the situation appears to be reversed, which may be yet another reflection of the power of the dominant culture. Novelist Amy Tan is more widely read than novelist Shawn Wong; comedian/actor Margaret Cho got a shot at a network television series, while Russell Wong had to settle for starring in the syndicated Vanishing Son ; and Asian American women anchor local news broadcasts across the country, while Asian American men occupy less visible positions as field reporters. The Joy Luck Club Picture Bride , and Double Happiness focus on women's lives. David Henry Hwang's Tony Award winning play, M. Butterfly , the story of a Chinese man who convincingly masquerades as a woman in order to spy on a French diplomat, puts it thus: "Being an Oriental, I could never be completely a man." In the American popular imagination, Asian women are depicted as ultrafeminine sexual objects for white men, and that sexual formula leaves Asian men literally out of the picture. For example, a recent episode of the CBS television series

It continues to be updated semi-annually.
This bibliography represents primarily fiction written by Asian American writers and is divided into two parts: pre 1950 and post 1950 literature. This division reflects the history of Asian immigration patterns to the US and the growth of Asian American communities. Students in Dr. Miller-Antonio's classes are asked to choose one book from the early literature and one from the post World War II literature and prepare a critical analysis that discusses how the book illustrates the history of Asian immigration to the US or how it explores topics such as representation of Asian American women, ethnicity and identity of self, family and community.

COMING TO AMERICA
With the fall of Saigon in April 1975, many Vietnamese officials and service personnel closest to the American troops were lifted to safety and processed for resettlement. It was only the beginning of a humanitarian crisis, studied by the United Nations in a 1979 conference, which would result in the United States and several other western nations accepting approximately 700,000 Vietnamese refugees.
From the end of the Vietnam War through 1983, former South Vietnam soldiers, displaced civilians, farmers left with destroyed fields, suspected American loyalists, and heavily-persecuted Chinese Vietnamese fled their homeland. Many crowded onto unstable fishing boats and floating platforms made of tires and sheet metal. With grim prospects, they set course for the South China Sea, to be rescued by sympathetic ship pilots or washed ashore in Thailand and Malaysia, or be captured. Through illness, dehydration, starvation, and violent weather, as many as half of the refugees may have died at sea. Many were robbed and killed by pirates.
ONCE BOAT PEOPLE
Lifted from the seas by Chinese merchant ships and foreign navies, many who were children still remember the terror and relief of resting on the decks of Australian and Indonesian war vessels, while their parents wondered if they would be processed and transferred to safety, or returned to Vietnam to risk their lives another day.

A survey by the Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA) reveals that Asian American homebuyers still face several barriers. According to AREAA, language and cultural barriers plague Asian American homebuyers the most. Vietnamese Americans in particular face more barriers than other Asian Americans. Formed in 2002, the Asian Real Estate Association of America is a national trade association dedicated to promoting home ownership opportunities among Asian American communities. The AREAA recently released the Asian American Homeownership study on Nov, 4 2004. According to the study, Asian Americans are the second fastest growing racial group - yet their home ownership rate lags behind non-Hispanic whites by 10-21%. In addition, Asian Americans typically live in more overcrowded situations than the rest of the nation.

Ethnically- -Chinese-Vietnamese-American By Diana Lin and Sophia Nguyen, Writers for the San Diego Asian Film Foundation Tran and the Buddhist monk in THE ANNIVERSARY Many within the Asian film festival community were shocked when Ham Tran’s THE ANNIVERSARY did not make the final Oscar nomination list. Shot on 35 mm and on location in Vietnam, Tran’s UCLA thesis project is an anachronistic journey through post-war Vietnam, interspersed with a Buddhist monk’s memories of war and betrayal on the anniversary his brother’s death. When the Oscar nomination list was released, some pointed to racism, corruption, or just plain ignorance as the deciding factor, but Tran has a different take.
