Who We Are "Asian American" refers to persons whose familial roots originate from many countries, ethnic groups and cultures of the Asian continent, including (but not limited to): Asian Indian, Bangladeshi, Bhutanese, Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Malayan, Mien, Nepalese, Pakistani, Sikh, Sri Lankan, Thai and Vietnamese. According to US Census Data, the Asian American population consists of these percentages of ethnicities: 23.8% Chinese, 20.4% Filipino, 12.3% Japanese, 11.8% Asian Indian, 11.6% Korean and 8.9% Vietnamese. Seventy percent of US Asians are immigrants who entered the US during one of three distinct immigration waves: before 1975, between 1975-1979, and 1980 or later. Most Asian Americans who have arrived since 1965 still live in ten large metropolitan areas. In 1996, an estimated four in ten Asian Americans lived in California. These US Asian-born individuals emigrated from countries with the overall lowest breast cancer rates in the world.

Asian American Immigration CHINESE MIGRATION Beginning in the 1980s, we have been one of the fastest growing immigrant groups here in the United States. A 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act began to eliminate some of the anti-Asian racism. The act reunified families, protected the domestic labor force, and called for immigration of people with needed skills. It also made us eligible for citizenship, which we had long been waiting for. The 1965 Immigration Act abolished the national-origins quota system and created an annual quota of 20,000 of us Asians. Therefore, the amount of immigrants increased drastically as time progressed. STEREOTYPES Almost ninety percent of Chinese immigrants were women between 1946 and 1952. About 348,000 of us came here from Hong Kong and Taiwan between 1941 and 1980. Beginning in 1981, the number of immigrants increased coming from the mainland as opposed to coming from Hong Kong and Taiwan. We reached a population of 1.6 million people between 1980 and 1990. By the mid-1990s we were approximately one-third of all Asian Americans. As Chinese Americans, we are often mistaken for Vietnamese or Korean Americans. In 1994, Asian Americans were thought of as foreigners who consistently competed for jobs. We have been stereotyped as "model minorities" because we are ambitious and hard working. After the United States declared war on Japan in 1941

An Asian American can be generally defined as a person of Asian ancestry or origin who was born in or is an immigrant to the United States The term "Asian American" is credited to the historian Yuji Ichioka who, in the late , used it to describe members of a new pan-ethnic radical political identity who shared common histories, experiences, and goals. In the United States, this term has widely supplanted the term " oriental " which was popularly used before the to describe East Asian peoples regardless of nationality, upbringing, or origin. Asian-Americans step up to ballot box
Survey finds surge in first-time voters
April 26, 2005 More than 40 percent of Asian-Americans who cast ballots last November in Massachusetts were voting for the first time, according to a survey released yesterday by a civil rights group. ADVERTISEMENT That proportion of first-time voters was higher in Massachusetts than in many other states surveyed across the country, according to exit polls conducted by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund. Advocates said they hope that the results point to increasing civic engagement. ''It shows the light at the end of the tunnel," said Lydia Lowe, executive director of the Chinese Progressive Association in Boston's Chinatown. Asian-Americans who are registered to vote in Massachusetts tend largely to be Democratic or unenrolled except for Vietnamese-American voters, who lean Republican and who overwhelmingly backed President Bush for reelection, the survey indicated. In the Commonwealth, 79 percent of Vietnamese-American poll respondents backed Bush, with just 21 percent favoring US Senator John F. Kerry of Massachusetts. Nationally, the poll indicated that Vietnamese-American respondents favored Bush over Kerry 72 percent to 28 percent.

This genre includes many national, cultural and religious heritages. Works can be subdivided into some major groups: East Asian [Chinese, Japanese and Korean]; South Asia [India and Pakistan]; Southeast Asia [primarily Vietnamese and Pacific Islanders]; and Middle East. Most Asian Americans are concerned about being human [Lenz]. Caught between a fast-paced world of progress and a mysterious world of mythology and legends, many books in this genre focus on a perpetual search for one's self.

PART 3 OF 4 VIETNAMESE AMERICANS
Vietnamese immigration was little more than a trickle of warbrides and orphans until 1970 when it began building rapidly through the fall of Saigon in 1975. After that it swelled with tens of thousands admitted under refugee provisions enacted hastily to help save a half million South Vietnamese fleeing in tiny fishing boats. At its peak in the midto-late-70s, an average of 120,000 entered each year. By 1997 the number had dropped slightly below 40,000.
Of the five major Asian American groups, Vietnamese have the highest F.O.B. ratio, 33% having immigrated during the past 10 years. As a consequence, 23% of Vietnamese households live below the poverty level, the highest rate among Asian groups. But 88% of families that had immigrated during the 1970s and 80s have graduated into the middle class and higher. Thanks to intense focus on education and achievement, a rapdily growing proportion of established Vietnamese Americans are now moving into professional, managerial and entrepreneurial positions, especially in the hi-tech sector. For the past five years Vietnamese have formed the backbone of Silicon Valley's engineering and skilled technical labor force. For at least the next decade or two the recent normalization of U.S. relations with Vietnam and the poverty and lack of prospects in that nation will contribute to continued high levels of Vietnamese immigration. By 2010 Vietnamese Americans will surpass all Asian groups except Chinese in population. The downside of that rapid growth is that Vietnamese Americans will continue to have the largest share living below the poverty line.
