The A merican V eterans T raveling T ribute is an unforgettable exhibit that pays tribute to the men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
The Vietnam War is of major importance to the Tribute and the 4/5 scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is its visual centerpiece, standing 8 feet high at the apex and spanning 370 feet!
The purpose
The mission of the "Traveling Tribute" is to traverse America, being displayed in as many communities as annual scheduling permits. One of the Tribute's primary functions is to allow people visiting the site to share a common bond of experience. As memory begins to fade on the sacrifices made by those who gave when America asked, a vital component of the Tribute is its educational value for our youth.
A main goal of the Tribute's constant visibility is that it shall serve as a continual reminder of America's veterans' dedication to freedom and that those who served shall not be forgotten.

Videos While our Vietnam War section concentrates on the time period from 1960 to 1975, you will find material on the French involvement as well as the events after the fall of Saigon. From an American viewpoint, the Vietnam War is not well understood. Even though it was part of the American daily life for some fifteen years, there is no consensus as to its purpose and result. Some Americans believe that Vietnam was a national policy blunder costing some 58,000 American lives and billions of tax dollars. That it divided the country at a time when it most needed to be unified leaving scars that are yet to be healed. Others believe the war was a noble cause similar to the United Nations effort that kept South Korea free. A brief look at the war itself reveals that it started out rather benignly with the sending of American advisors to assist the South Vietnamese train its growing army. The stated objective was to allow the South Vietnamese Army to resist aggression from the North and to preserve their sovereignty as a democratic nation. As time passed and American administrations changed, the roles changed until it became an American led and financed conflict. The number of American combat troops increased dramatically and a massive air war was executed in an attempt to interdict the escalating resupply of the North Vietnamese divisions in the South. The South Vietnamese received financial aid from a number of nations; and Thailand, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia and others contributed manpower. However, the war was predominately an American show.

The name I received in response to my request was James Arthur Harwood , a Sergeant in the US Army (5th Special Forces) who went Missing in Action in South Vietnam on 15 January 1971. There was another man lost in the same incident, a First Lieutenant by the name of Gerald Francis Kinsman ; I decided to adopt him too. I built remembrance pages for both the men on my 'have fun, catch all' website that, amongst other things, included cyber pet adoptions and personal photos. Later on that year, I decided to create a site just for the guys. While I added to the site on occasion, it was not large, and I thought that with those two men, "that was that." Wrong. Around January or February of 1999, I began to think about the POW/MIA issue some more, and decided to see if there were any women I could adopt. I learned that there was one, a civilian (missionary) surgeon named Dr. Eleanor Ardel Vietti

Where are our Veterans ?
Where are the Veterans, who went to fight a war,
And never did return, upon American soil? The many soldiers missing, rumors that still last, Has America forgotten, these Veterans of our past? Among the many rumors, scattered here and there, Are stories of our veterans, left without a care. We see pictures in the paper, read articles all the time , About the many Veterans, America left behind. It's hard to believe our government, could be so very cruel, To leave behind Americans, they don't deserve to rule .

A PBS Frontline special which first aired on 511-99. Focus is on the use of american military power to advance foreign policy goals in a post Cold war era. The program draws substantially on our vietnam experience.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/military/
var loc = "../../"; "Give War a Chance" is the story of two American leaders whose lives and experiences reflect the Vietnam generation's conflicting views about the use of America's military might. It is the story of Richard Holbrooke, U.N. Ambassador-nominee, architect of the 1995 Bosnian peace accords, and ret. Admiral Leighton "Snuffy" Smith, a Vietnam war hero who became NATO's commander in Bosnia and whose mission was to enforce the Bosnia peace. Each man spent his formative years in Vietnam, butsome thirty years laterthe Balkans crisis brought them into direct conflict over the role and responsibilities of today's military in securing and maintaining global peace.

Give War A Chance
FRONTLINE explores the bitter divide between military and civilian attitudes about where, when, and why America employs military force. In examining the gulf between what American diplomats want and what the military is prepared to deliver, correspondent Peter J. Boyer follows the inevitable collision from Vietnam to the Balkans between diplomat Richard Holbrooke and Admiral Leighton Smith. Their careers, and ultimate clash, represent the most vivid example of this critical foreign policy dilemma
Special reports on FRONTLINE's web site include one examining the evolution of the doctrine on the use of military force and, a chronology of significant U.S. military interventions over the past 30 years. Also published on the site is an analysis of the new kind of diplomacy'nation-building' backed by military might. Several top experts debate the pros and cons. The site also offers brief biographies of Holbrooke and Smith, parallel chronologies of their lives and careers, and, a selection of key readings on the issues examined in the FRONTLINE broadcast.

Historians in the United States have struggled for years to find a fair and balanced way to teach students about the Vietnam War - and the atrocities committed there by U.S. soldiers. But on this 30th anniversary of the American pullout from Saigon, objectivity may no longer be the greatest challenge facing teachers. Ethical Culture Fieldston School on a spring day That is the verdict of Jim Cullen, who teaches 16 and 17-year-old students at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School - a private academy in Bronx, New York. He specializes in 20th-Century U.S. History, and so a significant part of his course focuses on the Vietnam War.

The Vietnam War drove two presidents from office and destroyed the U.S. foreign policy consensus. This research gallery highlights the complex environment in which decisions were made that shattered a generation's perspective on America's role in the world. In their reminiscences, leading players in the drama and analysts of the events conjure up a fascinating portrait of the causes and consequences of U.S. decisions. What emerges is a rich tapestry where the pressures of global and domestic politics, the implications of a flawed strategy, and the influence of human weakness and moral blindness come together to produce a tragic turning point in the history of U.S. foreign policy.
