101. Kali Tal: Images Of Women In Vietnam War Novels By Combat Veterans
This essay by Kal Tal is concerned with the revision of images of women in novels written by american combat veterans of the vietnam war, and a new examination of the connection that those images have with the author's process of healing from the trauma of combat.

www.kalital.com CV Criticism Artwork ... Friends The Mind at War:
Images of Women in Vietnam War Novels by Combat Veterans A version of this paper was published in Contemporary Literature (Fall 1989).
The mind at war with itself wants to be healed, but still clings to the old damaged way of being. And underneath resistance one always finds a reversal of the truth, another story, a hidden feeling, or a hidden experience. (Griffin, 98-99) One of the great tasks of feminist literary criticism has been the "re-vision" of literary works in the manner suggested by poet and critic Adrienne Rich: "the act of looking back, of seeing with fresh eyes, of entering an old text from a new critical direction." (Rich, 18) This essay is concerned with the re-vision of images of women in novels written by American combat veterans of the Vietnam War, and a new examination of the connection that those images have with the author's process of healing from the trauma of combat. The combat veteran, unlike writers in most other genres, has a personal stake in the way his story turns out; it represents his own "working out" of the events he has experienced. Arthur Egandorf, a Vietnam veteran and a psychologist who works with veterans, explains in his book Healing from the War knowledge of those feelings. (Griffin, 55) The sadist, alienated from his body and desire, projects his alienation upon his female victims. The combat veteran generates female characters that represent the level of his own alienation. Both Asian and American women appear on the pages of novels by Vietnam veterans, but Asian women comprise the most extreme category of objectified images. This is not surprising, since racism (as well as sexism) is an established tradition in Western literature.

102. Propaganda, American-style
Article by Noam Chomsky on media manipulation and propaganda of the US, focusing on World war I, vietnam, and central America.

Propaganda, American-style
by Noam Chomsky
Pointing to the massive amounts of propaganda spewed by government and institutions around the world, observers have called our era the age of Orwell. But the fact is that Orwell was a latecomer on the scene. As early as World War I, American historians offered themselves to President Woodrow Wilson to carry out a task they called "historical engineering," by which they meant designing the facts of history so that they would serve state policy. In this instance, the U.S. government wanted to silence opposition to the war. This represents a version of Orwell's 1984, even before Orwell was writing. In 1921, the famous American journalist Walter Lippmann said that the art of democracy requires what he called the "manufacture of consent." This phrase is an Orwellian euphemism for thought control. The idea is that in a state such as the U.S. where the government can't control the people by force, it had better control what they think.. The Soviet Union is at the opposite end of the spectrum from us in its domestic freedoms. It's essentially a country run by the bludgeon. It's very easy to determine what propaganda is in the USSR: what the state produces is propaganda. That's the kind of thing that Orwell described in 1984 (not a very good book in my opinion). 1984 is so popular because it's trivial and it attacks our enemies. If Orwell had dealt with a different problem ourselveshis book wouldn't have been so popular. In fact, it probably wouldn't have been published.

PLAUSIBILITY OF DENIAL: Tim O'Brien, My Lai, and America by H. Bruce Franklin [Originally in The Progressive , December 1994] B esides the well-deserved guilt and shame and anguish evoked by the Vietnam War, Americans can also take rightful pride in two great national achievements. Foremost is the antiwar movement of tens of millions of ordinary citizens, a movement in which Vietnam veterans and active-duty soldiers eventually played a decisive role. The other major achievement is the literature produced by the war, a literature of which Vietnam veterans have become the formative creators. Among the scores of important Vietnam-veteran writers are such fine poets as Bruce Weigl, John Balaban, W. D. Ehrhart, Marilyn McMahon, and Yusef Komunyakaa (winner of the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for poetry); playwrights and filmwriters like David Rabe and Oliver Stone; and fiction writers as diverse as Larry Heinemann (winner of the 1987 National Book Award for Paco's Story ), Tobias Wolff, Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, Gustav Hasford (author of the novel on which the film Full Metal Jacket was based), Stephen Wright, David Huddle, Wayne Karlin, Philip Caputo, James Crumley, Winston Groom (author of

DELLUMS COMMITTEE HEARINGS ON WAR CRIMES IN VIETNAM
April 25, 1971
Caucus Room, Cannon House Office Bdlg Special thanks to Peter Ungar for this data contribution DELLUMS: The hearings will be in order. I am Congressman Ron Dellums. This is the 1st day of our mornings of hearings that will be conducted in this room between the hours of 9:30 and 12:30. This is the 1st open set of hearings on war atrocities in Indochina. We introduced back on 3-1 of this year House Joint Resolution [HJR] 409, cosponsored by 21, fellow Congressmen. We asked for action by the Rules Committee on this resolution and none was forthcoming. All of us are very interested in full, official hearings into the potential of war atrocities in Indochina, but receiving no action from the RULES COMMITTEE or the leadership of the Congress, we proceeded to try to plan as completely and capably as we could with these ad hoc hearings. I would like to introduce on my far left Congressman Reuss, who has joined us this morning, Congressman Riegle from Michigan, Congressman Don Edwards from California, Congressman Badillo from New York, Congressman Frank Ryan of New York; to my immediate right Cngwmn Bella Abzug of New York, Congressman Parren Mitchell from Baltimore, Congressman John Conyers from Michigan, Congressman Seiberling from Ohio.
