VIETNAM WAR
The Vietnam War, the nation's longest, cost fifty-eight thousand American lives. Only the Civil War and the two world wars were deadlier for Americans. During the decade of direct U.S. military participation in Vietnam beginning in 1964, the U.S. Treasury spent over $140 billion on the war, enough money to fund urban renewal projects in every major American city. Despite these enormous costs and their accompanying public and private trauma for the American people, the United States failed, for the first time in its history, to achieve its stated war aims. The goal was to preserve a separate, independent, noncommunist government in South Vietnam, but after April 1975, the communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam ( drv ) ruled the entire nation. The initial reasons for U.S. involvement in Vietnam seemed logical and compelling to American leaders. Following its success in World War II, the United States faced the future with a sense of moral rectitude and material confidence. From Washington's perspective, the principal threat to U.S. security and world peace was monolithic, dictatorial communism emanating from the Soviet Union. Any communist anywhere, at home or abroad, was, by definition, an enemy of the United States. Drawing an analogy with the unsuccessful appeasement of fascist dictators before World War II, the Truman administration believed that any sign of communist aggression must be met quickly and forcefully by the United States and its allies. This reactive policy was known as containment.

Vietnam War
, military conflict in Vietnam between the U.S.-backed South Vietnamese government and the Communist-led guerrilla forces backed by North Vietnam. The war, the nation's longest, resulted in the loss of 58,000 American lives and was the first in which the United States failed to achieve its goals. The tonnage of bombs dropped on North Vietnam by the United States was greater than the total of that dropped on Germany, Italy, and Japan during World War II. The war left up to 10 million refugees and caused sharp divisions among the American people. The Vietnam War followed the Indochina War in which the Vietnamese overthrew French rule when France tried to reestablish its colonial control of Southeast Asia after World War II. The Geneva Accords, which ended the struggle in 1954, created two nations: Communist-ruled North Vietnam and noncommunist South Vietnam. The accords required the holding of elections to determine what government a reunified Vietnam would have, but South Vietnam refused to comply. When North Vietnam, allied with the insurgent Vietcong, sought to overthrow the government of South Vietnam, the United States tried to stop it. American involvement has its roots in Harry S. Truman's decision to contain the spread of communism anywhere. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson carried on this policy, each one escalating U.S. involvement and the number of advisers and (after 1965) combat troops in Vietnam. The number of American troops exceeded 500,000 in 1968.

Military history of Vietnam The Vietnam War was a war fought roughly from to after the North Vietnamese government secretly agreed to begin involvement in South Vietnam . Time period placement for the Vietnam War is sketchy. Some consider the Vietnam War to have begun in 1946 with the French attempt to re-establish control over their colony. This definition comes from those who tend to include the war with France, the war between the two Vietnams after 1954, and the war with the American troops until the fall of Saigon in 1975. Many more people separate the 29-year conflict in Vietnam into two separate wars, First Indochina War which was with the French and the Second Indochina War which was with the Americans. The difficulty in this is establishing a beginning and an end. The fighting with the French was more clear cut (1946 when the Vietnemese wrote their constitution to 1954 with the

"No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now. Rarely have so many people been so wrong about so much. Never have the consequences of their misunderstanding been so tragic." [Nixon] The Vietnam War has been the subject of thousands of newspaper and magazine articles, hundreds of books, and scores of movies and television documentaries. The great majority of these efforts have erroneously portrayed many myths about the Vietnam War as being facts. [Nixon] Myth: Most American soldiers were addicted to drugs, guilt-ridden about their role in the war, and deliberately used cruel and inhumane tactics. The facts are: 91% of Vietnam Veterans say they are glad they served [Westmoreland] 74% said they would serve again even knowing the outcome [Westmoreland] There is no difference in drug usage between Vietnam Veterans and non veterans of the same age group (from a Veterans Administration study) [Westmoreland] Isolated atrocities committed by American soldiers produced torrents of outrage from antiwar critics and the news media while Communist atrocities were so common that they received hardly any attention at all. At the Eleventh Hour of the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month of 1918, an armistice (cease fire) ended World War I. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day to remember the conflict that took 23,000,000 lives. Congress renamed it Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all U.S. Veterans. It is still called Armistice Day in Great Britain. The Canadians and Australians call it Remembrance Day. WELCOME TO
The Vietnam War: past and present
a resource for high school history teachers
Created and developed by Brian Sims. Last updated on May 26, 1998.
INTRODUCTION: As a watershed event in modern American history, the Vietnam War is an integral part of America today. Indeed, its impact far transcended southeast Asia and the men, women, and nations that participated there it also altered the political, economic, social, cultural, and ideological landscapes of the United States. We still live within the shadows of its legacy. The Vietnam War, therefore, is an essential event to cover in the curriculum of a high school American history class. PURPOSE: It is with this idea in mind that "The Vietnam War: past and present" has been designed, for few events have had such a profound effect on America. In addition, as a former teacher, I understand the many challenges that instructors face in trying to cover recent US history at the end of the academic year. This web page, therefore, is meant to give teachers a fast and easy way to learn about the war, as well as ideas for how the internet can be used to teach it. It is my belief that the expanding nature of the world wide web, coupled with the fact that many Vietnam veterans are actively involved in developing their own war related sites, makes the internet a vital resource for understanding Vietnam both as it happened at the time, and as it lives on today. So, whether you are a new teacher looking for lesson plan ideas, or a wise old sage trying to enhance an already existing syllabus, this web page has been built with you in mind.

Timeline From April 1861 to April 1865, a brutal civil war was fought between the Confederate States of America and the United States of America. The American Civil War is one of the most researched conflicts in modern history, yet many people still desire more knowledge about it. The roots of this tragic conflict go back to the birth of the country. The founding fathers, for all their wisdom, could not solve all the differences between the original thirteen states. The products of their labors, the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, failed to totally define the relationship between the Federal Government and the States. The slavery question received no more than a partial and temporary solution. These issues of states' rights festered and the rhetoric inside the Congress grew more heated. Finally, words were no longer enough for some and the nation began to split apart. The secession of eleven Southern States and the unbending position of President Lincoln toward preserving the Union led to the first shot fired on Fort Sumter in 1861. The Rubicon had been crossed. The next four years can only be described as an intensely fought conflict between two groups of Americans, each believing their cause was just. Over
