Vietnam’s history is a long, exciting and fascinating one, with the oldest archaeological findings showing that people have been living there as far back as about a half million years ago - making them among the very first East Asians who practiced agriculture in that area. The first truly influential part of history in Vietnam occurred during the Bronze Age, when the Dong So culture was in Vietnam, dramatically advancing their level of civilization. Between 200BC and 938AD, the Chinese ruled over this region, having conquered the Red River Delta in the 2 nd century BC - a critical expanse in Vietnamese history. This led to the inclusion of Chinese population and culture within the Vietnamese borders. The native culture, though, hung on strong, with a strong sense of national identity among the people, and though many Chinese influences still exist in Vietnam, the traditional Vietnamese culture has hung on throughout the years and is still greatly predominant in that country.

If you are traveling to this country, you may be interested in sexual relationships with locals, and no, I do not mean the services of prostitutes or other commercial providers. While you can meet citizen interested in sex accidentally, the chances of success are not particularly high if you are there only for a limited period of time (as I said: no prostitutes). On the other hand, they often are sexually attracted to foreign people. For young women, especially in the big cities, it is chic to have a Western boyfriend. So, there must be a trick to overcome the time-consuming "accidental", and to link more effectively the sexual interests of foreign visitors with those of locals. Try the Internet. Or, more to the point: try www.AdultfriendsFinder.com . The service lists a good number of residents explicitly interested in non-commercial sexual relationships. History of Vietnam VN Embassy Learn about Vietnam : History Early history The archaeological excavations carried out recently have proved the presence of human beings in the territory of Vietnam since the Paleolithic Age or the Old Stone Age (300,000 - 500,000 years). In the Neolithic Age (New Stone Age), Hoa Binh - Bac Son cultures (about 10,000 BC) had witnessed the development of agriculture and animal husbandry, including even the technique of paddy rice cultivation. The Vietnamese as an ethnic group had been formed and developed early in the Red river and Ma river delta situated in northern part of the present-day Vietnam. Generations to generations, people moved from highland and mountainous areas to the plains, developed new lands for cultivation. They constructed a system of irrigation dams and dykes to tame the mighty Red River, the river that brought about several devastating floods every year. It is the process of continuous labor to control water - to fight against flood, storm and drought, to build up irrigation dams and canals for agricultural cultivation that formed the paddy rice civilization and the commune culture. In the Bronze Age, a unique and distinct civilization had been formed that reached a high level in technical skill as well as art - the brilliant Dong Son culture. The recent ethnological, historical and archaeological studies and researches have asserted the existence of the Hung Kings' period in Van Lang Kingdom (later Au Lac Kingdom) about 1000 years BC. In 200 BC, Au Lac Kingdom was invaded and annexed into the giant empire of the Han feudalism in the north. Nevertheless, the ten-century domination of Chinese feudalism could not assimilate Vietnamese culture and break the Viet people's brave resistance.

Vietnam's History/Background Legend has it that Vietnam began with a mountain fairy, Au Co, and the dragon king, Lac Long Quan. Mother Au Co had 100 eggs, all of which hatched and were sons. The dragon king left his mountain fairy and took with him 50 sons back to the sea, while Au Co took the other 50 sons and returned to the mountains. Until 1945, a dragon was symbolic of the ruler and with kings having a dragon tattooed to their upper thighs until 1293. Since the sons were hatched, the mountain tribe Muong is linked to them, especially since their totem is a bird, while the dragon totem is supposed to protect the Kinh from water dangers.

History
PAVN's progenitor was a collection of guerrilla bands, many of them composed of ethnic minority highlanders, assembled in Indochina during World War II and armed and encouraged by the Allied Forces as opposition to the Japanese army, which had occupied much of Southeast Asia. A few of these guerrilla bands were organized by the Indochinese Communist Party (ICP), as the VCP was known at the time (see Development of the Vietnamese Communist Party , ch. 4). Viet Minh armed force (see Glossary), the precursor to PAVN. When the French returned to Indochina, the newly formed Viet Minhconsisting of approximately 1,000 men in 13 infantry companieswas driven into the hills behind Hanoi. In 1954, at the end of the First Indochina War, PAVN was still a united-front military force. It remained for the party to "regularize" it. Control mechanisms were introduced gradually and perfected, reorganization was undertaken, military elements were enlarged, support units were added, and formal regulations on military service were developed. A tight system of party controls was introduced, military schools were opened and military assistance was solicited from abroad, chiefly from China. A directive of the Twelfth Plenum of the Central Committee (Second National Party Congress), issued in March 1957, established universal military conscription. By 1965 PAVN numbered 400,000; by 1975, 650,000. Of the approximately 2.9 million in uniform in 1987, about 1.1 million served in the PAVN Regular Force and 1.8 million served in the Paramilitary Force.

Vietnam - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Vietnam's history is a story about strength in the face of adversity. For almost as long as there have been people in Vietnam, they have been fighting for independence. And through this history of struggle for independence, Vietnam and the Vietnamese people have grown into great strength.
Archeologists believe that human life existed in the area of Vietnam as much as 300,000-500,000 years ago. But the only evidence of a Vietnamese culture dates back to 2000 to 1400 BC. It was during this time that Vietnamese people settled around the Ma and Red rivers. They learned to irrigate fields for rice growing. Vietnamese culture and society grew under native Vietnamese leaders for more than 1,000 years, until the country was taken over by their neighbors, the Chinese.
The Chinese Han Dynasty was fairly strict with the Vietnamese. The Chinese set up a Vietnamese government that tried to force new rules on Vietnamese life. One of the new rules regarded marriage. It tried to make women less important than men. This and other Chinese rules didn't sit well with the Vietnamese, so there were many revolts during China's 1,000-year rule of Vietnam.

Essay of the Month The Bronze Age
Towards the end of the second millenary B.C., copper and especially bronze made their appearance. Vietnamese soil contains many deposits of copper, tin, lead and zinc, and bronze industry underwent remarkable development. Western archaeologists whose excavations were followed by veritable plunder have given the civilization in Vietnam the name of DONG SON civilization, the first important site having been discovered in Dong son, Thanh hoa province. In fact, Dong son represents an advanced stage of the Bronze Age, and many sites have been discovered in recent years all over the territory of Vietnam, with large quantities of artifacts; all told, about thirty sites with tens of thousands of artifacts. The first copper, then bronze objects appeared beside polished stone implements and earthenware with a still Neolithic character. Sandstone moulds for manufacturing axes, spears, and knives have been found in many places. The quality of the bronze and the shapes improved little by little, eventually ending up with the remarkable creations of Dong son. This evolution took many centuries. While it was marked by external elements, these were not decisive, as claimed by Western archaeologists.

In 1995 PeaceTrees Vietnam was born as a grassroots effort to bring healing, peace and renewal to one of the most war-torn provinces of Vietnam. This is accomplished through the sponsorship of landmine clearance, citizen diplomacy/tree-planting programs for American and Vietnamese citizens on cleared land, victim and survivor assistance and landmines awareness education programs for children. Still today, unexploded ordnance (UXO) and landmines surround the people of Quang Tri Province, threatening their lives and their livelihood as this deadly debris renders much of their land unusable. Nearly every week a person is maimed or killed by a UXO or landmine.
March citizen diplomacy delegation plants over 2,000 more trees.

History
Vietnam Table of Contents THE VIETNAMESE TRACE the origins of their culture and nation to the fertile plains of the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam. After centuries of developing a civilization and economy based on the cultivation of irrigated rice, the Vietnamese began expanding southward in search of new ricelands. Moving down the narrow coastal plain of the Indochina Peninsula, through conquest and pioneering settlement they eventually reached and occupied the broad Mekong River Delta. Vietnamese history is the story of the struggle to develop a sense of nationhood throughout this narrow 1,500-kilometer stretch of land and to maintain it against internal and external pressures. The first major threat to Vietnam's existence as a separate people and nation was the conquest of the Red River Delta by the Chinese, under the mighty Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220), in the first century B.C. At that time, and in later centuries, the expanding Chinese empire assimilated a number of small bordering nations politically and culturally. Although Vietnam spent 1,000 years under Chinese rule, it succeeded in throwing off the yoke of its powerful neighbor in the tenth century. The Vietnamese did not, however, emerge unchanged by their millennium under Chinese rule. Although they were unsuccessful in assimilating the Vietnamese totally, the Chinese did exert a permanent influence on Vietnamese administration, law, education, literature, language, and culture. Their greatest impact was on the Vietnamese elite, with whom the Chinese administrators had the most contact. The effects of this Sinicization (

History Scientists say that Vietnam is one of the earliest cradles of human race. Vietnam, as a nation called Van Lang was formed 4,000 years ago by the Hung kings. Myths said that the Dragon and Fairy met each other, then one bag of hundred eggs was born. In order to control the country easily, fifty of them went up to the mountain with Mother, the Fairy and the other fifty went down to the ocean with Father, the Dragon. Now, there are 54 groups in all living under the same roof. Vietnam has suffered nearly 1000 years Chinese domination, 100 years French invasion and 20 years American occupation.
