Brief history of Vietnam
BRIEF HISTORY OF VIETNAM:
The Vietnamese first appeared in history as one of many scattered peoples living in what is now South China and Northern Vietnam just before the beginning of the Christian era. According to local tradition, the small Vietnamese kingdom of Au Lac, located in the heart of the Red River valley, was founded by a line of legendary kings who had ruled over the ancient kingdom of Van Lang for thousands of years. Historical evidence to substantiate this tradition is scanty, but archaeological findings indicate that the early peoples of the Red River delta area may have been among the first East Asians to practice agriculture, and by the 1st century BC they had achieved a relatively advanced level of Bronze Age civilization.
CHINESE INFLUENCE:
INDEPENDENCE:
THE ECONOMY UNDER THE LY DYNASTY:
Like most of its neighbors, Vietnam was primarily an agricultural state, its survival based above all on the cultivation of wet rice. As in medieval Europe, much of the land was divided among powerful noble families, who often owned thousands of serfs or domestic slaves. A class of landholding farmers also existed, however, and powerful monarchs frequently attempted to protect this class by limiting the power of feudal lords and dividing up their large estates. The Vietnamese economy was not based solely on agriculture. Commerce and manufacturing thrived, and local crafts appeared in regional markets throughout the area. Vietnam never developed into a predominantly commercial nation, however, or became a major participant in regional trade patterns.

I'll digress now for just a few minutes to tell you a bit about the history of Vietnam, give a few book reviews, and tell you a bit about the dark side of Vietnam. These things aren't all that related to the trip itself, but I want to give a bit of a balanced view, and couldn't quite figure out quite where to put them in the narrative. I decided to lump them all together in one page, and then get on with the cycling. If you aren't interested in these topics, you can skip this page without hurting the narrative.
Vietnam History - The Really Really Short Version
I'm going to crunch 4,000 years of history into a few paragraphs so I will have to leave out a few details. The Vietnamese ethno-linguistic group formed during the bronze age around 3000 B.C. Most of the people that ultimately gave the racial and cultural control of the region settled in the fertile deltas of the Red River in the north and the Mekong in the south. What is now Vietnam consists of a fairly long plane that runs down the coast with the river deltas making up the most noticeable part, and a mountain range now called the Central Highlands that runs up the center and the eastern side. The northern and southern parts were both settled independently and have been joined as one country and split back apart many times. Over the years, Vietnam went through a long series of cycles that went something like this:

VIETNAM HISTORY TRIP REPORT. Back to Trips Page The History Department took 35 students to Vietnam on the 18 th th May 2002. The trip was intended to enhance their understanding of the Vietnam War, a topic studied during year 9. We left school at 5:00am on Saturday 18 th May and checked into the airport. Our flight left early at 7:45am and we arrived in Vietnam just after 9am. Our tour-guide Hai, from Saigon Travel met us at the airport and we set off for a full day’s itinerary. The temperature was 37 degrees and the students welcomed the air-conditioned bus. Many of the girls felt it necessary to change up to five times a day. Our first visit was to the Vinh Nghiem Temple, where some students released some birds as a traditional symbol of good luck. In the temple itself, there was a wedding ceremony at one end and a funeral service at the other. Students spent some time watching both. After a brief visit to the Post Office and Notre Damn cathedral, buildings built by the French and which were very colonial in appearance, we went to the War Crimes Museum. This museum was the first place where the students could learn more specifically about the Vietnam War. The museum has horrific evidence left behind after the war. Staff had to emphasise that most of the evidence was particularly biased against the Americans. However, as the students’ own knowledge of the war had been clouded by Hollywood movies, which emphasised the Americans as heroes, it was good to look at the alternative perspective. Students were shocked at some of the evidence they saw, including deformed foetuses in jars, a consequence of Agent Orange and Napalm bombings. This definitely brought home the horrors of war.

DISCOVERY INDOCHINA Home Weather Vietnam Vietnam History Overview Introduction History Facts Health Transportation Dining ... Tours Vietnam's recorded history begins in 111 BC, when the Chinese conquered the northern part of the region and ruled for more than a thousand years. For the next 700 years, Vietnam was a collection of small, competing kingdoms (the northern and southern portions of the country vied for control even then). The Nguyen dynasty took power in 1802 and ostensibly ruled most of Vietnam until 1954, but the Nguyen emperors were largely controlled by the French after 1887. During World War II, the Japanese invaded. After the war, the French attempted to hang on to Vietnam as a colony. The Viet Minh, a coalition of Communist and Nationalist groups, forced the French out in 1954, and the country was temporarily divided along the 17th parallel. The North consolidated under Communist leadership, and the South went to the Nationalists. An election was supposed to have been held, but the South, suspecting that the North would win, refused to participate. A few months later, the South declared independence.

Visitors entering Buddhist pagodas are expected to remove their shoes and it is considered impolite to point feet, especially the soles, at people or statues of the Buddha. Donations to the upkeep of temples are not expected, but are received gratefully. Permission should be asked before taking photographs of people or in places of worship. Social
The most appropriate manner of greeting is a gentle handshake and a smile. Though occasionally rigid, Vietnamese officials - such as the police - appreciate being treated in a firm, yet diplomatic manner. It is best to deal with misunderstandings with patience and good humour. Local people who offer assistance appreciate small gifts such as cigarette lighters, pens, foreign cigarettes, liquor, perfume and even shampoo. However, giving money to street beggars can lead to mob scenes as other beggars also attempt to impose upon such generosity. More Information Customs Festivals Government History ... http://www.sadec.com/Profile/viet03.html
Political History The characteristic feature of Vietnam’s history is the country’s struggle against foreign occupation and intervention, for a good part of the last 2,000 years. The invaders were mostly but not exclusively the Han Chinese, who ruled Vietnam over 1,000 years from 111 BC to 938 AD. In mid 19th century, the French began intervening in the country’s affairs on a large scale, and they seized Saigon in early 1859. By 1886, France had conquered the whole country which they governed as a colony and incorporated into French Indochina despite resistance from the Vietnamese. Communist guerrillas under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh resisted French domination. Ho Chi Minh’s declaration of Vietnamese independence after WWII sparked violent confrontations with the French, culminating in the French military defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. The Geneva Accords of 1954 temporarily divided Vietnam into 2 zones (the Communist north and the anti-Communist, US-supported south). Political and ideological opposition quickly turned to armed struggle, prompting the USA and other countries to commit combat troops in 1965. The Paris Peace Agreements, signed in 1973, provided an immediate cease-fire and signalled the withdrawal of US troops. Saigon eventually capitulated to the Communist forces on 30 April 1975. In July 1976, the nation was reunited, and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was established. ..since then

I want to have, to whatever extent possible, groups of comrades remembering the same thing to get as complete a picture as possible. Everyone's memories are kind of jumbled and several sets of recollections are probably better than one. That isn't to say that individuals won't be used.
I would like to communicate with as many guys as possible and have them provide some preliminary information using this 327th Vietnam History Form

Early History of Vietnam - Brief History Brief History Early History 1 Early History 2 Origin of Vietnam Name Anti-Colonial Struggle ... Ascending Dragon S ometime between 200 B.C. and A.D. 200, the intermingling of the Red River Delta's early inhabitants resulted in a distinct Vietnamese people. Virtually from the outset, the Vietnamese were ruled by the Chinese, and they would continue to be until A.D. 938.
During the centuries of Chinese control over the Red River Delta, two independent states rose to power in what is now central and southern VietNam. From the first to the sixth centuries, the kingdom of Funan held sway aver the Mekong Delta and the region that is now Cambodia; the kingdom was over thrown by the Mon-Khmer, who founded the Cambodian empire. Along the coast of central VietNam, the kingdom of Champa ruled from the late second century until the 15th, when it was conquered by the Vietnamese, who expanded steadily southward after expelling the Chinese. In the 17th and early 18th centuries, the Vietnamese would wrest the Mekong Delta from Cambodia, essentially completing the formation of their country. Of the more than a dozen dynasties that have ruled independent VietNam, three are considered "great." The first was the Ly (1009-1225), whose rulers established Hanoi as their capital in the year 1010, naming it Thang Long, the City of the Soaring Dragon. (It was not until 1831 that the name Hanoi-City in a Bend of the River-came into use.) The Ly built new roads, dikes, and canals, and they vigorously promoted agriculture. In 1044 - 22 years before William the Conqueror invaded England the Ly founded VietNam's first postal service.
