Anthrax confirmation in Vietnam
HANOI, Vietnam A Vietnamese government scientist says a sample of white power discovered in the office of a BP joint venture in Ho Chi Minh City has tested positive for anthrax. The powder was found at the offices of BP Petco on October 31 and sent for tests at the city's Pasteur Institute. Asked by Reuters news agency to confirm if the sample had tested positive for anthrax, the government scientist, who did not want to be identified, replied: "Yes." "We have to wait for the Health Ministry's instruction on how to handle this case." The scientist said other suspicious samples had been sent for testing from other places in Vietnam in recent weeks, "but we found no other case." MORE STORIES Anthrax attacks CNN.com Asia

As you go through airport procedures you understand you are about to enter a typical communist state: not a single smile and your luggage is X-rayed (they do it again when you leave). Before you are allowed to walk off with your luggage they will check that numbers match on your tickets and your luggage tag.
We shared a minibus to Hanoi. It was 4 dollars per person. Upon arrival in town we were more or less forced to have a look at a hotel were the driver first stopped. His brother's place? Whatever, we had done so much shopping in Bangkok that we wanted to leave some luggage at the hotel, preferably in a locked room. This we found at Binh Minh Hotel, 27 Ly Thai To Street. 29 dollars is 2-3 times more than for a double at a budget place but we wanted our stuff safe. They would keep it for 3 weeks at no extra charge.
As you might know, things have changed regarding Internet access in Vietnam. There are a couple of good Internet cafes nearby 116 Hang Bac Street. Prices were 500-600 Dong per minute. May we highly

195. Study Guide To The Vietnam War
Recommendations as to books to read when researching the war, for readers of any interest level. Also provides a guide to online resources.
http://www.refstar.com/vietnam/
Also see Studying the Vietnam War Online
This page is a study guide for those interested in learning about the Vietnam War, using the best resource available: books. This guide is designed so that readers of any interest level can pick a prioritized list of books which will give them the most information for whatever effort they wish to make. An unusual and desirable feature are word counts and estimated study time for each book, the only good way to measure study workload. Also included are some fascinating author interviews from Booknotes Most of these books are in print; others can be acquired through an online used book finder like BookFinder or Alibris The guide's goal is stated in my Philosophy of Study . Also see why you should study the Vietnam War . If you prefer studying using online resources (which is far less effective), see my Studying the Vietnam War Online . To find out who I am, see About the Author , or look at Author's Visit to Vietnam
Recommended Study Track Read the first (or only) selection from each of the following sections, and read them in that order. You might want to pick Sections 7 and 8 early in your study to use as companion guides.

View any of these photos in this series by clicking on it. Marble Mountain was one of five mountains located south of Da Nang that stretched from the coast inland or westward. All of these mountains had cave entrances and numerous tunnels. There was a road that ran between Crow's Nest and Marble Mountain, from DaNang through the mountain and about eight miles down to 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regimental Headquarters. It then turned right for about five miles and brought you to the Tu Cau bridge. Today these five mountains have Vietnamese folk lord names of: Water, Metal, Wood, Fire and Earth. 199. Vietnam Country Analysis Brief
Information on vietnam's energy sector, including sections on oil, gas, and electricity.
http://www.eia.doe.gov/cabs/vietnam.html
Home Country Analysis Briefs Vietnam Country Analysis Brief PDF version February 2005 Background Oil Natural Gas Electricity ... Links Vietnam
Vietnam has the potential to become a regional oil and natural gas supplier. Ongoing exploration has led to several oil and gas discoveries in recent years. Note: Information contained in this report is the best available as of February 2005 and is subject to change. GENERAL BACKGROUND
non-commercial commercial Vietnam claims ownership of the potentially hydrocarbon rich Spratly Islands , as do the Philippines , Brunei , Malaysia , China , and Taiwan . Vietnam also claims the Paracel Islands , which China first occupied in 1974. OIL
Vietnam has 600 million barrels of proven oil reserves, but that total is likely to increase as exploration continues. Crude oil production averaged 403,300 barrels per day (bbl/d) in 2004, making Vietnam the third-largest oil producer in Asia. Bach Ho (White Tiger), Rang Dong (Dawn), Hang Ngoc, Dai Hung (Big Bear), and Su Tu Den (Ruby) are the largest oil producing fields in the country. Although it is a significant oil producer, Vietnam remains reliant on imports of petroleum products due to a lack of refining capacity. Overall, Vietnam had net exports of 193,300 bbl/d of oil in 2004. Export markets include the United States , Japan , Singapore , and South Korea . In September 2004, the Vietnamese government offered nine exploration blocks in the Phu Khanh basin off its southern coast. In November 2004, Japanese oil companies Nippon Oil Exploration, Idemitsu Kosan, and Teikoku Oil signed an agreement to explore in two offshore blocks southeast of Ho Chi Minh City . They plan to drill a test well in 2006 and complete exploration by 2007. In December 2004, Talisman was awarded the right to conduct exploration in the Cuu Long Basin . Bids on the blocks will conclude in March 2005.
