Vietnam Exploring Vietnam Asia Homepage The World A lthough many westerners still imagine Vietnam through the lens of war, it is in reality a country filled with captivating natural beauty and tranquil village life. Its highlands and rainforest regions, far from being devastated, continue to yield new species and team with exotic wildlife. Its islands and beaches are among the finest in all of Southeast Asia, and its cuisine is very possibly the most delicious you will ever find. Over two decades have passed since Vietnam was officially united, and in that time it has done a remarkable job of healing its wounds. Today, this gracious and graceful country is an outstanding travel destination. S haped like an elongated S , Vietnam stretches the length of the Indochinese Peninsula and covers a surface area of 128,000 square milesmaking it roughly the size of Italy or, in the U.S., New Mexico. China lies to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, and the South China Sea to the east. Topographically, Vietnam is a verdant tapestry of soaring mountains, fertile deltas, primeval forests inhabited by exotic fauna, sinuous rivers, mysterious caves, otherworldly rock formations, and heavenly waterfalls and beaches. Beyond nature, the curious and open-minded visitor will find in Vietnam a feast of culture and history.

There are some divine beaches along the coast, while inland there are soaring mountains, some of which are cloaked by dense, misty forests. Vietnam also offers an opportunity to see a country of traditional charm and rare beauty rapidly opening up to the outside world.
When To Go
There are no good or bad seasons to visit Vietnam. When one region is wet, cold or steamy hot, there is always somewhere else that is sunny and pleasant. Basically, the south has two seasons: the wet (May to November, wettest from June to August) and the dry (December to April). The hottest and most humid time is from the end of February to May. The central coast is dry from May to October and wet from December to February. The highland areas are significantly cooler than the lowlands, and temperatures can get down to freezing in winter. The north has two seasons: cool, damp winters (November to April) and hot summers (May to October). There is the possibility of typhoons between July and November, affecting the north and central areas.

Armed Reconnaissance
Route Package Areas The nickname 'Rolling Thunder' was assigned to all air strikes, armed reconnaissance, and photo reconnaissance against selected targets and lines of communication (LOC) in North Vietnam. Rolling Thunder armed reconnaissance areas, referred to as Route Packages were designed for the purpose of fixing responsibility for target development, collection of intelligence data and target analysis in overall control of the Commander in Chief Pacific (CINCPAC). To ensure economical and effective use of resources, operational procedures have been developed by the operating units, 7th Air Force and Carrier Task Force 77, that permit the full range of coordination for all air operations in the Rolling Thunder program and yet permit both services to operate in all areas. Assigned areas of responsibility at the present time [summer 1966] are US Military Assistance Command Vietnam (COMUSMACV) for Route Package I, Pacific Fleet (PACFLT) for Route Packages II, III, IV and VIB, and Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) for Route Packages V and VIA. Restricted zones were defined as the area located within 30 nautical miles (NM) of the center of Hanoi, ten NM from the center of Haiphong or in the buffer zone, 25 NM from the China/North Vietnam (CHICOM) border.

History of Vietnam
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Traditionally, the History of Vietnam dates back more than 4,000 years. But in actuality, there are no reliable sources indicating the Vietnamese or their country until roughly 2700 years ago. For most of the period from 207 BC to early 10th century, it was under the rule of successive dynasties of China . Vietnam regained independence in 939, and complete autonomy a century later. While for much of its history, Vietnam remained a vassal state to the imposing, much bigger China, it defeated three Mongolian attempts of invasion during the Yuan Dynasty , when China was under Mongolian rule. The independent period ended in mid-19th century, when the country was colonized by France . During WWII Japan occupied Vietnam. After the war, France attempted to re-establish control but ultimately failed. The Geneva Accords partitioned the country in two. During this Cold War period, the North was supported by the People's Republic of China and the USSR , while the South was supported by the United States . Tensions quickly escalated into the Vietnam War . The war ended with the American withdrawal from Vietnam in March 1973 and the capture of Saigon in April 1975.

    Colby's Vietnam: History misrepresented
Washington Post Op Ed. May 1, 1981
The following are excerpts from an Op-Ed that ran in the Washington Post on 5/1/81. It is being posted now in light of efforts to eulogize Colby. More importantly the details Colby gave represent programs for action that the CIA follows, to one degree or another, in most of its political operations: empowering a foreign personality who sells himself to the CIA and creats a government subservient to the CIA. Such leaders are traitors to their own people. These Traitors use terror to maintain their rule. The details given below also demonstrate how the CIA writes politicized intelligence to support its operations.
    COLBY'S VIETNAM: HISTORY MISREPRESENTED
Former CIA director William Colby's article "El Salvador: Which Vietnam"? [op-ed, 4/20] describes the various stages of U.S. involvement in Vietnam and offers the period 1968 to 1972the era of the CIA "Phoenix" assassination teamsas a model for use in El Salvador. In addition to this heinous recommendation, his article ignores the massive evidence of the Pentagon Papers and grossly distorts the facts. According to Colby, a prime architect of U.S. policy in Vietnam, America's role in that country began in 1960. This "first" stage lasted until 1963. This era "marked the start of Hanoi's effort to overthrow the South." Colby's statement contains two major misrepresentations. U.S. involvement started in 1949, not 1960, when we sponsored French attempts to reimpose their colonial rule over Indochina. The second major misstatement relates to Hanoi's role in 1960. All objective Vietnamese experts attest to the great reluctance of the North Vietnamese to challenge U.S. power in South Vietnam. However, both the CIA's intelligence and a State Department white paper claimed the opposite was true. From that point forward until April 1975, the war, in U.S. intelligence reports, was portrayed as a North Vietnamese attack on South Vietnam.

    • 111 BC: The Nam Viet kingdom (spreading from the Red River delta to north of Canton) is annexed by the Han and becomes the chinese district of Giao-chi. The next thousand years is marked by progress in civilization, but also in the national sentiment. Numerous uprisings most notably the Trung sisters (40-43) and Ly Bon (542-545) rebelions, are crushed. During the entire Vietnam history China remains both a model and a threat.
    • 602: Chinese rule is now a protectorat, the capital being Dai La Thanh (Hanoi)
    • 939: Ngo Quyen frees the country (Dai Co Viet) by vanquishing Chinese armies at the Bach Dang river.
    • 968: Dinh Bo Linh pacifies the country, and reorganizes it following the Chinese model. Mandarins will be recruited by litterary contests from 1075 (Van Mieu temple) to 1919. The capital moves to Hoa Lu with the Dinh and first Le dynasties.
    • 1010: The Ly dynasty moves the capital to Thanh Long (Hanoi). During their reign, Chinese, Khmer, and Cham attacks are repelled (most notably by Ly Thuong Kiet). The expension towards the South begins, with territories conquered from the Cham (this resulted in the destruction of their culture).
    • 1226: Tran dynasty.
