Vietnam: A Teacher's Guide
The Asia Society's Focus on Asian Studies , Special Issue, No. 1, Fall 1983. Table of Contents
Preface
The year 1983-1984 will be a time of reassessment of the Vietnam War among Americans. The desire to "rethink" America's involvement in Vietnam has been prompted by the ten-year anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal of combat troops from Vietnam; the completion of the controversial Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and events in Central America that pose some of the same kinds of dilemmas and foreign policy choices as did the situation in Vietnam. The WGBH Educational Foundation has produced a thirteen-part television retrospective, Vietnam: A Television History , to be broadcast by the Public Broadcasting Service starting in October, 1983. The series has also been adopted as a licensed telecourse. Information on the telecourse can be obtained from Films Incorporated, 1213 Wilmette Avenue, Wilmette, IL 60091; (312) 256-4730. The Asia Society's Education and Communications Department (editors and publishers of Focus on Asian Studies ) has taken this opportunity to prepare a teacher's guide on Vietnam for secondary school use. A committee of three university-based scholars and three secondary-level classroom teachers has pooled its considerable resources to write this guide. Robert Geise is Social Studies Chairman, South Side High School, Rockville Centre, NY. Michael J. Glatthaar is a secondary school teacher. A. Tom Grunfeld teaches history at SUNY/Empire State College. Moss Roberts is Associate Professor of Chinese at New York University in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Literatures and directed the East Asian Studies Program there for many years. Mark Willner is Assistant Principal, Chairman (Social Studies Department), Midwood High School, Brooklyn, NY. Marilyn Blatt Young is Professor of History at New York University.

Vietnam Exploring Vietnam Asia Homepage The World A lthough many westerners still imagine Vietnam through the lens of war, it is in reality a country filled with captivating natural beauty and tranquil village life. Its highlands and rainforest regions, far from being devastated, continue to yield new species and team with exotic wildlife. Its islands and beaches are among the finest in all of Southeast Asia, and its cuisine is very possibly the most delicious you will ever find. Over two decades have passed since Vietnam was officially united, and in that time it has done a remarkable job of healing its wounds. Today, this gracious and graceful country is an outstanding travel destination. S haped like an elongated S , Vietnam stretches the length of the Indochinese Peninsula and covers a surface area of 128,000 square milesmaking it roughly the size of Italy or, in the U.S., New Mexico. China lies to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, and the South China Sea to the east. Topographically, Vietnam is a verdant tapestry of soaring mountains, fertile deltas, primeval forests inhabited by exotic fauna, sinuous rivers, mysterious caves, otherworldly rock formations, and heavenly waterfalls and beaches. Beyond nature, the curious and open-minded visitor will find in Vietnam a feast of culture and history.

Overview Geography T he Socialist Republic of Vietnam is located close to the centre of the Southeast Asian region. Its mainland frontier amounts to 4,510km, of which 1,306km are adjacent to China to the north, 2,067km to Laos to the west, and 1,137km to Cambodia. Vietnam looks over the Pacific ocean to the east and south. Vietnam is an S-shaped country with 331,690 sq km of land area and 1,000,000 sq km of seawaters. It has nearly 400 small and large islands, of which Truong Sa (Spratly) and Hoang Sa (Paracel) are the largest archipelagos. Vietnam is divided into three geographical regions. The southern region is less complicated in term of geographic structure, with some low hills and mountains near the Central Highlands and the western region of Kien Giang province. The rest is the Dong Nai River delta and the Cuu Long (Mekong) River delta, the latter is the largest river basin in the whole country. These two deltas form the southern delta which measures approximately 36,000 square kilometres. The land is very fertile and the climate is propitious for agriculture. As a result, it is the largest rice granary in Vietnam. Back to Top

Part of ThingsAsian's kids section, this site is a wonderful collection of traditional legends, with beautiful pictures of traditional art. It is especially useful in describing two important celebrations in the Vietnamese calendar, the children's festival of lights or mid-autumn festival (Tet Trung Thu) and the new year festival (Tet or Tet Nguyen Dan). It covers a wide range of cultural and historical topics that are interesting for students and adults alike, with more in-depth descriptions of interest to older students. Also has links to other Southeast Asian sites on such topics as Laos textiles and Burmese art. http://www.thingsasian.com/destination/vietnam/kids.htm VietTouch This site is built by several Vietnamese Americans (working in the software industry in California), and it provides a very good general history of Vietnamese culture and politics. Both the format and the content is easy to print out. It has a quick link to a nice graphical timeline of Vietnamese history (http://viettouch.com/hist/) as well as links to info and pictures of Vietnamese stamps, coins, architecture, etc. As a college history teacher and student of Vietnamese history, this site wins top honors for its complete listings of Vietnamese historical events, a who's who list, and expanded resources on key historical issues important in Vietnamese history. A great resource for 6-12 school reports.
