Cultural exhibition joint effort of several U.S., Vietnamese institutions By Elizabeth Farabee and Katie Xiao

Washington Tourists at the Smithsonian Institution were greeted with an unusual sight over the weekend as visitors emerged from the Vietnam Festival wearing wide rimmed conical-shaped hats made of bamboo and palm leaves, the traditional headgear of Vietnam. The Vietnam Festival, organized jointly by the Smithsonian Institution's Freer and Sackler art galleries, the U.S. Department of State, the Embassy of Vietnam and the U.S.-Vietnam Trade Council, was held July 9-10 to celebrate a decade of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam. Vu Xuan Duc, an exhibit organizer for the festival, delighted many visitors with a complimentary non , the Vietnamese name for these hats, and patiently explained the traditional role that this lamp-shade-like headpiece has played in Vietnamese culture. “Vietnamese women have traditionally worn the non because Vietnam is a country with sunshine all the time,” he said as he selected a

Vietnamese New Year (Tet) - February 9, 2005 The more popular name for the Vietnamese New Year is Tet , where as the formal name is Nguyen-dan . Tet is a very important festival because it provides one of the few breaks in the agricultural year, as it falls between the harvesting of the crops and the sowing of the new crops. The Vietnamese prepare well in advance for the New Year by cleaning their houses, polishing their copper and silverware and paying off all their debts. They observe the custom of the kitchen god Tao for a week before the New Year. They believe there are three gods represented by the three legs of the cooking equipment used in the kitchen. The middle god is a woman, the other two are her husbands. It was once customary to provide the gods with a carp on which to travel. The carp represents the second last stage in the process by which animals are gradually transformed into dragons. They buy the carp from the market, bring it home and place it in a bucket of water to place at the altar of the house before it is later set free. A special rice pudding is eaten at New Year which must be prepared beforehand. The rice pudding is known as

Vietnamese Culture
Vietnam has a cultural landscape as varied and colorful as its topography. The Viet ethnic group is well in the majority, comprising about 88% of the population, but there are 53 other minority ethnic groups, many of whom are hill tribes living in villages largely untouched by modern civilization. Though Vietnam has rushed into modernization over the past several years, the economy has remained largely agrarian, with farmers, fishermen, and forestry workers accounting for 73% of the workforce and most of the population still residing in small villages. The Vietnamese have a strong sense of family and of community, and are accustomed to close human contact and far-reaching interrelationships. This might be one of the reasons why, despite centuries of occupation by foreigners, Vietnamese cultural traditions have survived. Moreover, outsiders are still welcomed. Americans, in fact, will get a wide smile and a thumbs-up, although the reception is notably better in the south than in the north. One final note on the subject: Most westerners don't know that since the end of "The Vietnam War," this country has engaged in two other wars one with Cambodia and another with China. To many Vietnamese, the war with the United States is considered ancient history.

History of Vietnam - Culture and background country
History
Vietnam has her own legends concerning the origins of the race but according to the history books the Vietnamese first appeared as one of many scattered peoples living in what is now South China and Northern Vietnam just before the beginning of the Christian era. According to local tradition, the small Vietnamese kingdom of Au Lac, located in the heart of the Red River valley, was founded by a line of legendary kings who had ruled over the ancient kingdom of Van Lang for thousands of years. Archaeological findings indicate that the early peoples of the Red River delta area were among the first East Asians to practice agriculture and by the first century BC had achieved an advanced level of civilization.
The Chinese Influence In 221 BC the Ch'in dynasty in China conquered the neighbouring states and became the first to rule over a united China. The Ch'in Empire, however, did not survive the death of its founder, Shih Huang Ti and this was soon felt by Vietnam.

Vietnam has got a fairly large cultural community that was formed around the first half of the first millenium before Christ and flourished in the middle of this millenium. That was Dong Son cultural community. This culture attained a degree of development higher than that of others at that time in the region and had its own characteristics but still bore the features of Southeast Asian culture because of the common South Asian racial root (Southern Mongoloid) and the water rice culture. Different development routes of local cultures in various areas (in the deltas of Hong (Red) river, Ma (Horse) river, Ca river and so on...) joined together to form Dong Son culture. This was also the period of the very "embryonic" state of Vietnam in the form of inter- and super-village community, which come into being and existed in order to resist invaders and to build and maintain dykes for rice cultivation. From this pattern of "embryo" state, primitive tribes grew into nations. The period of Van Lang-Au Lac culture (lasting for nearly 3,000 years up to the end of the first millenium before Christ) in the early Bronze Age with 18
