Vietnamese culture VN Embassy Learn about Vietnam : Culture It can be said that there were three layers of culture overlapping each other during the history of Vietnam: local culture, the culture that mixed with those of China and other countries in the region, and the culture that interacted with Western culture. The most prominent feature of the Vietnamese culture is that it was not assimilated by foreign cultures thanks to the strong local cultural foundations. On the contrary, it was able to utilize and localize those from abroad to enrich the national culture. The Vietnamese national culture emerged from a concrete living environment: a tropical country with many rivers and the confluence of great cultures. The natural conditions (temperature, humidity, monsoon, water-flows, water-rice agriculture ...) exert a remarkable impact on the material and spiritual life of the nation, the characteristics and psychology of the Vietnamese. The Vietnamese nation was formed early in the history and often had to carry out wars of resistance against foreign invaders, which created a prominent cultural feature: a patriotism that infiltrated and encompassed every aspect of life. Evolution of culture VN Embassy Learn about Vietnam Culture : Evolution Vietnam boasts an age-long and special culture that is closely attached to the history of the formation and development of the nation. Historians have shared a common view that Vietnam has got a fairly large cultural community that was formed around the first half of the first millenium before Christ and flourished in the middle of this millenium. That was Dong Son cultural community. This culture attained a degree of development higher than that of others at that time in the region and had its own characteristics but still bore the features of Southeast Asian culture because of the common South Asian racial root (Southern Mongoloid) and the water rice culture. Different development routes of local cultures in various areas (in the deltas of Hong (Red) river, Ma (Horse) river, Ca river and so on...) joined together to form Dong Son culture. This was also the period of the very "embryonic" state of Vietnam in the form of inter- and super-village community, which come into being and existed in order to resist invaders and to build and maintain dykes for rice cultivation. From this pattern of "embryo" state, primitive tribes grew into nations. The period of Van Lang-Au Lac culture (lasting for nearly 3,000 years up to the end of the first millenium before Christ) in the early Bronze Age with 18

Saigon on Wheels
An Introduction by
Ed Kashi I n the spring of 1994 I went to Vietnam for the first time. As a youth growing up in America in the 1970's, Vietnam was a place I only knew as a tragic war. With talk in the press of increasing ties between the two former enemies, and the possibility of a lifting of the U.S. trade embargo, my instincts told me that the time was ripe for a visit. I also wanted to visit Vietnam quickly, before the onslaught of U.S. journalists that would be sure to follow any warming of relations between the two nations. I wanted to do a story about the emerging youth culture in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) as a reflection of the first post-war generation's mood and habits. Arriving in that bustling, free-spirited city, I soon realized that my initial idea wasn't panning out. The Vietnamese youth culture is very tame compared to other places like Berlin, Belfast and the U.S. where I had worked. After a brief panic (I was there at my own expense) I realized my ultimate story had been passing right in front of my eyes: the motorbike culture of Saigon. It was a moment of visual inspiration, and I immediately changed gears to produce a photo essay that would show some of the unique qualities and some of the current mood of a country we know so little about. T his was a completely new experience for me. It was as though a new set of eyes had been given to me.

The Chinese legacy
However, the impact of other races and nations is dwarfed by that of China. The Confucian code and Buddhism introduced during their occupation of the country have dominated Vietnamese life for two millennia, and will doubtless continue to do so for centuries to come. The Dynasties
The years of the Imperial Dynasties that ruled Vietnam from the 10th to the 19th century were marked by wars and feuds with neighbouring countries as the country expanded to the south and consolidated its territory. Culturally, there was little change under the Confucian administrative structures inherited from the Chinese. The conservative nature of Confucianism limited technological and cultural progress, making the country highly vulnerable to the advanced military power of the French.

Vietnam - Culture
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Vietnam is sometimes called the "jewel of southeast Asia," and for good reason. It comes from the country's natural beauty, as well as the beauty of its people and customs. As you will learn, religion and tradition are very important parts of Vietnamese culture.
There are three main religions in Vietnam. They are Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. Peace with oneself and others is an important part of all three, but there are important differences between them, too.
Buddhism is the largest religion in Vietnam. It involves the worship of the god Buddha and the respect of his teachings. At one point in Vietnam's history, it was the official religion. It isn't the official religion anymore, but it is still the most popular.
According to Buddha, people are born to suffer. People suffer, Buddha said, because they want things. Desire for wealth, fame, and power are the cause of everyone's suffering. To avoid the suffering, Buddha teaches, people must control their desires. And to do that, Buddhism teaches that there are eight "right" ways to live. Those eight ways are right thought, right conduct, right speech, right job, right effort, right mindfulness, and right meditation. What is meditation? It is the practice of making yourself calm and still, with your mind clear. It is a popular practice in Vietnam.
