WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Events Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links Most visitors to Vietnam are overwhelmed by the sublime beauty of the country's natural setting: the Red River Delta in the north, the Mekong Delta in the south and almost the entire coastal strip are a patchwork of brilliant green rice paddies tended by women in conical hats. There are some divine beaches along the coast, while inland there are soaring mountains, some of which are cloaked by dense, misty forests. Vietnam also offers an opportunity to see a country of traditional charm and rare beauty rapidly opening up to the outside world.
When To Go
There are no good or bad seasons to visit Vietnam. When one region is wet, cold or steamy hot, there is always somewhere else that is sunny and pleasant. Basically, the south has two seasons: the wet (May to November, wettest from June to August) and the dry (December to April). The hottest and most humid time is from the end of February to May. The central coast is dry from May to October and wet from December to February. The highland areas are significantly cooler than the lowlands, and temperatures can get down to freezing in winter. The north has two seasons: cool, damp winters (November to April) and hot summers (May to October). There is the possibility of typhoons between July and November, affecting the north and central areas.

Vietnamese Culture - A 1970's Perspective
Tet 1971 in Vietnam!
By Phu Si Saigon (MF) - When the clock strikes midnight on January 27th, the first day of the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, millions of Vietnamese will exchange toasts of good wishes for the coming year of the Hog. The greetings are familiar and always concern the well-being of the family, the focal point of Vietnamese life. "May I wish you," so goes the toast to the head of the family, "nothing but prosperity in your endeavours. May you have a son at the beginning of this year and a daughter at the end. May your fortunes increase tenfold and may peace and happiness be with you and your family..." "Tet Nguyen Dan" or the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, begins this year on midnight January 27th, I971 and the festivities will last three days. The traditional Vietnamese calendar runs in cycles of twelve years. A genie, in the form of an animal figure, dominates each year. They are, in the following order: Ty (mouse); Suu (buffalo); Dan (tiger); Mao (cat); Thin (dragon); Ty (snake); Ngo (horse); Mui (goat); Than (monkey); Dau (cock); Tuat (dog); and Hoi (hog). As the old year gives way to the new, the ruling genie quietly bows out to the next. This coming year will be the year of the Hog.

Viet Nam has emerged from decades of war and isolation to become one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing countries in Asia. Yet as the Vietnamese people seek to integrate with the international community, the pressure of globalization threatens to displace traditional cultural values, and economic development has brought serious social and environmental costs. Vietnam Exploring Vietnam Asia Homepage The World A lthough many westerners still imagine Vietnam through the lens of war, it is in reality a country filled with captivating natural beauty and tranquil village life. Its highlands and rainforest regions, far from being devastated, continue to yield new species and team with exotic wildlife. Its islands and beaches are among the finest in all of Southeast Asia, and its cuisine is very possibly the most delicious you will ever find. Over two decades have passed since Vietnam was officially united, and in that time it has done a remarkable job of healing its wounds. Today, this gracious and graceful country is an outstanding travel destination. S haped like an elongated S , Vietnam stretches the length of the Indochinese Peninsula and covers a surface area of 128,000 square milesmaking it roughly the size of Italy or, in the U.S., New Mexico. China lies to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, and the South China Sea to the east. Topographically, Vietnam is a verdant tapestry of soaring mountains, fertile deltas, primeval forests inhabited by exotic fauna, sinuous rivers, mysterious caves, otherworldly rock formations, and heavenly waterfalls and beaches. Beyond nature, the curious and open-minded visitor will find in Vietnam a feast of culture and history.

ROWEN AN E-MAIL Hi, my name is Rowen Sandel and for the past three years I have been teaching third grade at Highland Elementary School in Oakland, California where I'm better known as Mr.Rowen. On September 1st I began a ten month trip that will bring me to ten countries as I literally go around the world. I plan to visit Norway, Italy, Nepal China Vietnam , Cambodia, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and Tonga before returning to the U.S. in early June of 2001. Over the last three years I have had many wonderful students, some of whose families are from Cambodia, Tonga, Vietnam, and Laos and one of the inspirations for this trip came from my desire to visit these countries. I also wanted to visit other places and visit other friends around the world. This website is an opportunity for the children of Highland to see images and learn stories and information about where they or their classmates come from. But it is not just for my past students, students of Highland, or people whose families are from a country I'm visiting. This site is for anyone, child or adult, who wishes to see new things, think about new ideas, and learn about things they could have only imagined before. It is for anyone who is a life-long-learner and wishes to experience the larger world we live in.

    Introduction
It is not easy for many Vietnamese born and raised in Vietnam to write about our culture. Often, when submersed in it we don't realize that the New Year celebration, the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, or the leaf hat that some of us wear and fish sauce we cook with are distinctively ours. And usually, it is not until we experience other cultures do we become aware of our own.
Our VietMedia team has labored over this section in hope that it will help anyone interested to learn more about the beauty and richness of Vietnamese traditions. In addition we hope to remind the younger Vietnamese generations, especially those living outside Vietnam, of their unique heritage.
We are open to any constructive comments or opinions. Please feel free to email VietMedia if you have any concerns.
