Vietnam Time and Date Vietnam Culture Back to Top Chinese determine permeated all aspects of orthodox Vietnamese culture, while Western determines have been strong in the 20th century. Vietnam's Confucian heritage is seen in the importance of family to the Vietnamese. Families are essentially patrilineal, but Vietnamese women work alongside men in many jobs and play a major role in raising children and managing family finances. When possible, the Vietnamese prefer to work from early morning until early evening, with an extended rest time in the heat of midday. In rural areas, both men and women wear trousers and shirts or blouses. On formal occasions and in urban areas, Western-style clothing is common, including skirts and blouses for women. Women still sometimes wear a form of the orthodox ao dai, a long, slit tunic worn over pants. Rice is the staple food. Vietnamese cuisine incorporates elements of both Chinese cooking and the cuisines of other Southeast Asian countries. Noodle soup with chicken or beef broth (pho), a typical kind of spring roll (cha gio), and the use of fermented fish sauce (nuoc mam) for dipping and seasoning are among the many noteworthy dishes.

Vietnamese Culture Top destinations Festivals History Culture Vietnamese Culture Overview Family and Social Culture Before the late 1980s, nearly all Vietnamese people lived in villages, and the cultivation of wet rice was the principal economic activity. The basic component of rural society was the nuclear family, composed of parents and unwed children. Respect for parents and ancestors is a key virtue in Vietnam. The oldest male in the family is the head of the family and the most important family member. His oldest son is the second leader of the family. Sometimes, related families live together in a big house and help each other. The parents chose their children's marriage partners based on who they think is best suited for their child. When people die, their families honor their ancestors on the day of their death by performing special ceremonies at home or at temples and by burning incense and fake money for the one who died.

For many years, Vietnam formed part of the French colony of Indochina, along with Cambodia and Laos. With Vichy French agreement, in 1941, the Japanese occupied Vietnam during their World War II sweep through South-East Asia. The resistance to the Japanese was led by the Indochinese Communist Party, formed by Ho Chi Minh in 1930, and its armed wing, the Viet Minh. Following the Japanese defeat in 1945, the Communists proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. In 1946, France sent a large expeditionary force to re-establish their control. After eight years of fierce fighting, the struggle ended in the defeat of the French garrison at Dien Bien Phu (1954).
Vietnamese troops finally withdrew from Cambodia in September 1989. Freed of this burden, Vietnam was able to concentrate on rebuilding its own economy, having introduced a home-grown version of

Vietnam culture ministry blasts foreign ad firms
HANOI - Vietnam's powerful Culture and Information Ministry has accused foreign advertising agencies of using illegal business practices to dominate the local market, official media reported Monday.
The Vietnam Investment Review (VIR) weekly quoted an internal ministry report as saying ``heavy treatment'' should be meted out to foreign advertisers that broke the law and local firms should be protected from the competition.
The tone of the ministry report was at odds with recent official statements that Hanoi might soon relax curbs on foreign ad agencies and allow joint ventures to operate.
Some 20 foreign advertisers have offices in Communist-ruled Vietnam, which bars them from direct business activities in a country where political mistrust of consumerism runs deep.

VIETNAM CULTURE OF A THOUSAND WORDS
by Jenifer Chappell
Professor Kong Fah Lee, John Abbott College (Winter 2001)
Vietnamese culture is not a topic we know much about. The Vietnamese culture is very different because it is influenced by many other countries. The religion in Vietnam was influenced by China and Western beliefs. The philosophy of life for the Vietnamese people revolves around the belief of paying respect to their dead ancestors. Culture is also recognized by the historical facts of the country. Historically, Vietnam was dominated mostly by the Chinese, and later on, by the French, the Japanese and the United States of America. This international turmoil ended with the signing of the Paris Peace Agreement in 1973. Every country has its culture. A country's culture involves everything such as the religious beliefs and philosophy of life , just to name a few. Because Vietnam was a dominated country for a long time, it was influenced by countries such as China, America and France. These countries have a great importance to Vietnam's history. Culture is what makes a country a home to the thousands of people that inhabit the earth. Vietnam's people live in a country of many religious beliefs which consists of three major religious practices and three little known religions. Like many countries, Vietnam holds in great importance its religions and their teachings. Vietnamese people have based their lives on these doctrines and live up to them.

Historians have shared a common view that Vietnam has got a fairly large cultural community that was formed around the first half of the first millennium before Christ and flourished in the middle of this millennium. That was Dong Son cultural community. This culture attained a degree of development higher than that of others at that time in the region and had its own characteristics but still bore the features of Southeast Asian culture because of the common South Asian racial root (Southern Mongoloid) and the water rice culture. Different development routes of local cultures in various areas (in the deltas of Hong (Red) river, Ma (Horse) river, Ca river and so on...) joined together to form Dong Son culture. This was also the period of the very "embryonic" state of Vietnam in the form of inter- and super-village community, which come into being and existed in order to resist invaders and to build and maintain dykes for rice cultivation. From this pattern of "embryo" state, primitive tribes grew into nations.
